Vivendi Universal sends along word that F.E.A.R. (http://www.whatisfear.com/) has Gone Gold and will be on store shelves on October 18th.

The countdown to one of the biggest PC game launches this Fall has officially begun, as Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) today announced the October 18th global street date for F.E.A.R. ™ (First Encounter Assault Recon) from Sierra Entertainment. Additionally, VU Games unveiled plans to release an all-new F.E.A.R. multi-player demo in late September. The multi-player demo will follow on the heels of the hugely successful single-player demo that has reached more than 1.5 million downloads since its release in August, making it one of the most popular game demo downloads in history.

Nooooo! I was expecting this to be out on Oct. 11th, and I had the whole following weekend free to play. Now I'll be stuck playing in short bursts here and there.

I get so annoyed when companies have something finished and then wait a month to ship. With any luck I'll find a download early and then actually pay for it when it comes out.

I really don't see what all the fuss is about with this one. Both the single and multiplayer demos were very mediocre, with only the spooky elements in SP making it worthy of any note.

ohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboyohboy !!!!

i`m not interested in mp demos (I`m just the kind of person that gets bitten by lamers on online play VERY often)

But I`d be damned if the singleplayer isnt one of the best ive seen in the past few years...boo to halo 2!

You're kidding, right? What difference does a week make? Evidently enough of a difference to warrant you searching for a pirated copy, I guess.

Sometimes I really do despair...

They need to make a dipshit of the month award for people just like you. :p

But what does this have to do with the Revolution controller? :) Kidding aside, is this game worth it? I had problems getting the demo to run, but now I have a new system to try this out...

Alas, this game brought to me the harsh realization that my videocard is woefully out of date. I can stand to play a game at the lowest possible settings (BF2 at 800x600 with literally everything turned to minimum) but I can't play a game that stutters every few seconds.

What a shame. The bits that I read about FEAR kind of reminded me of Clive Barker's Undying.

I really don't get the fuss over this game. I thought it looked sort of interesting before I played the demo, but afterwards I'm firmly in the "meh" area.

It didn't really all that different from any other first person shooter to me. In fact I was continually reminded of Half-Life.

Not to mention the creepy little girl with long black hair. Samarra anyone?

The fact that Evil hynotized us with the F.E.A.R. banner almost makes me want to buy the game. Anyways, I gotta go buy me some Crucial memory. :D

As long as I am using my current system, I don't think that I'll be picking this one up. Not worth it. The demo couldn't get past the cutscenes at the beginning. It would go to the loading screen and then stop working. Now, if I could buy the game, install it to see if it works and if it doesn't return it for a store credit or refund, that would be better but alas it is no longer the innocent times of the early 90s.

Yeah, I hear you on that one. They talk about how it was one of the most popular demo downloads in history. I think pretty much any game would be if you couldn't visit a single game-related website for two months without seeing a skyscraper banner for the game.

I still think this game looks pretty damn good... unfortunately I had to run the demo at 400x300 resolution to get a good framerate with shader effects. It was still pretty damn fun, and the AI is more versatile than any I've seen... it's like all the good things about Far Cry AI, plus all the good things about HL AI, plus some cool tricks.

Near the end of the SP demo, when the helicopter dropped the troops I took cover beneath the raised platform it was hovering above... one soldier went down the stairs and took cover behind some crates, while the others jumped the rail, each in a different place, so that I was more or less completely surrounded. Pretty damned impressive if you ask me. As for the jumping through windows, it's not spectacular AI but it's a nice and unique effect.

Unfortunately I don't think I'll be buying it, at least until I get some major upgrades.

The demo was running perfecty on my computer with a high resolution and effects. I'm sure that added to the experience. Mainly, I like the feel of the SP combat. It's sort of like Counter Strike, where you can never be sure which way the enemies are coming, and it's harder to hide in a safe area. Plus, the spooky elements seem fun. All I hope is they included a widescreen mode.

The difference a week makes is that the week of Oct. 11th I'll have around 20 hours free to play video games, and the following weeks I'll have at most 3 hours per week for gaming.

I don't feel bad about piracy when it's just time-shifting. It's not much different than TiVo.

demo was mostly "meh" for me too. the creepy parts were neat, but stuff like that only works once.

The only parts that seemed like good ai looked almost entirely scripted. If you know the script, you can make them do the stupidest things in the world. On the other hand, human vs. pc, I guess I should be able to outthink them handily---which is why there are always a lot more of them than of us.

I don't seem to recall doing jumping scissor kicks in Half-Life... heh

I'm not going to defend this game - mostly because I never defend any game. But I really don't understand the "Mediocre" comments. The game has better combat than pretty much any shooter I've played, but isn't even focussed on it. I was scared outta my damn mind while playing it the first time. Well, I guess frightened is a better word.

Anyway, anyone who's curious about the game, try the demo. Keep in mind that that is what it is - a demo.
