View Full Version : Q&A: Crytek Talks Warhead, CryENGINE 2 - No Crysis for Consoles

Next-Gen briefly caught up with Crytek to get the latest on the technology behind Crysis - Warhead, and what the game means for the company’s previous statement of “no more PC exclusives."
Next-Gen: Were Cevat's recent comments (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=10242&Itemid=2) about "no more PC exclusives" for real, or just out of frustration felt at that moment?
Engine business manager Harald Seeley, Crytek: When Cevat said we would not create new PC exclusives, he was referring to any new projects we will start in the future. Of course Warhead has been under development for quite some time, and we had no desire or intention to disappoint our loyal PC fans. So, after some careful consideration, we decided to continue our support for the PC Crysis franchise with this release. But yes, all new franchises we develop in the future will be created with a cross platform strategy in mind. Of course we're also aware of the danger of making a game that is only designed for one particular audience and platform, and failing to meet the needs of the others. So any game we create will always offer something unique on each platform and will be carefully tuned to both the capabilities and strengths of that platform, as well as the intended audience.

That was confusing. So their new franchises are going to be multi, but all Crysis games will remain on the PC?

Yeah that's what it sounds like. I also like that they're saying the PC versions will be made for PC and the console versions will get the dumbed-down version. At least I hope that's what they're going for.

Dumbed-down versions? Sounds like he said optimized versions.

That's exactly what it sounds like to me as well.

What I got out of it: "We're releasing the expansion pack to this PC game on the PC. We'll be releasing anything else on multiple platforms."
Not real hard to translate.

Seems like no chance at all to get the Crysis engine running good enough on a console with only 512mb of ram total, when it needs that much just for video ram, no shock there. So they are stuck making the expansion since they had it planned from the start, and that they might have learned enough to aim for a more scalable game the next time around.
Maybe they listened to the guys at Valve or something.

Makes sense I guess. Their games are ways to show off their engines (Didn't FarCry start out as just a tech demo?), so it wouldn't make sense for them to port their current engine to another platform after all this time.

Aside from the money, totally wouldn't make sense.

It just seems to be me like Crytek is being lazy. They clearly have the technology there, they just lack the ability to optimize it or "dumb it down" as some of you are saying.
I cant see any reason why they couldnt make a console version of these games besides just not wanting to.

Yeah they're lazy. Can you tell me how that is compared to all the dozens of games that you've mentioned which have as much technical acheivements on consoles as Crysis, that you find a reason to believe its possible?

psst crysis wasn't very good from the start, sure the engine was marvelous but when it comes to gameplay that game was sorely lacking. I honestly couldn't care less what they do with there engine, make your game fun first dummies.

What exactly are these other games they're working on? I'd sure like to see their engine perform well on consoles.

i.e. the people who either can't run it or are fanboys pissed at the lack of a watered-down port.

Or maybe, just maybe, they really didn't like it. Different strokes, you know?
