From Joystiq: (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/05/bioshock-ships-over-2-2-million/)
Take-Two lurves their BioShock baby. In an announcement today, the publisher revealed that, to date, BioShock has shipped over 2.2 million units (http://ir.take2games.com/ReleaseDetail.cfm?ReleaseID=314411) across both the Xbox 360 and Games for Windows platforms. Not too shabby, eh?
It's clear that with this news, Take-Two's gearing up for BioShock mania. Combine strong sales with the recent announcement of BioShock on PS3 (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/28/bioshock-surfaces-on-ps3-this-october/), news of the Verbinski-directed BioShock film (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/05/08/bioshock-movie-in-development-gore-verbinski-directing/), and the inevitable BioShock 2 announcement (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/03/11/bioshock-2-due-in-fourth-quarter-of-2009-from-2k-marin/) from 2K Marin, and we're on the cusp of the next big franchise in gaming. Good thing or bad thing?
Also comes the announcement from T2 that Bioshock 3 might accompany the movie release. (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/53019)

Just to put this in perspective, and because I feel like being a Troll, Call of Duty 4 has shipped over 10 million units.

Let's not forget that Call of Duty is the fourth in a line of best selling games. Bioshock is totally new, at least for this particular series. By the time Bioshock 4 ships I'm sure we will see close numbers. Call of Duty 4 is awesome but it took time to get to where it is.

Also, GTA IV just shipped 11 million copies... and has been around for a shorter time than either of these games. :p

Bioshock director's cut anyone? I loved Bioshock...i'm really curious how they are not going to run it into the ground.

Bioshock was my 2007 GOTY and CoD4 was my runner-up, and I love them both dearly.

Agreed, I love both games. Since we are throwing around numbers of games selling I wonder how much Starcraft 2 will sell. I plan on abandoning all other gaming after SC2 comes out. Hopefully and most likely we will see another Bioshock or Cod.

LoL, just bought this less than an hour ago. :) Great game (I've played it before).

whats i dont understand is... If Bioshock 2 coming for PS3 and 360 why waste the resources to port Bioshock to PS3... When said resources could put toward making Bioshock 2

A particularly interesting point that Take 2 also mentioned was that they see BioShock as being an "every-three year" project. That actually sounds like one of the most sensible things they could do.

Hmm...I was hoping it would sell more. This game deserves better than 2 million. Ah well, maybe next time. Also, the PS3 version should push a few hundred thousand more copies.

But 2.2 million is great for a game like Bioshock. Very few games sell like Halo, GTA or first party Nintendo games. I think the sequel will do even better with so many talking up the first game, enticing those who missed out on the first one.

I believe CoD 4 is now over 11 million copies shipped, not sold.

Did they mention a while back, just after the release on the 360/PC that they were looking at having a few teams "leapfrogging" installments every couple of years? In that case they probably have 2 different teams, one for Bioshock 2, one doing the port for PS3.

Selling those kinds of numbers without multiplayer is awesome. I imagine a huge portion of the COD numbers and some part of the GTA sales must be relatd to the multiplayer aspects.

I hope they don't make BioShock 2 multiplayer...I just can't see how it would work.

COD4 is 10. GTA 4 is 11.

I figured it had sold more copies than that...who cares...that game kicked serious ass regardless

If you really want to be an ass, World of Warcraft makes more in a month based purely on subscription fees than many small countries, with more units shipped than CoD4.

Since Bioshock is based on UT3 engine which now runs pretty well on the PS3 this should be an easy port. So its basically free money.

Great game, but no Bioshock, and the average joe prefers War over thought.
Also multi platform helps.

No, he's not. I hope there's no multiplayer on any Bioshock game. Waste of time. There's already enough great multiplayer gamers out there.

True story. But I guess thats relative. I played Bioshock way more than COD4. But I see where your coming from

Godammmm Im so in this camp, I have enough bullshit MP games, some great, some not, LO gave me pure single player and man was I giddy.
Bioshock did it even better.
Absolute concentration on the single to make it what it needs and should be.

Bioshock 2 from 2K Marin not 2K Boston? Color me skeptical.

Agreed. Bioshock is quite a niche in art/concept/design
Most gamers just want to play gangster or blow up terrorist villages with a real gun.

2k Marin is 2K Boston/2K Australia. without Ken Levine.

They could of got 2,000,001 sold if they had some fucking multiplayer.

So... celebratory release of the first two -Shock games over XBL and PSN? I have been jonesing for creepy ambiance played up by the androidanized undead and omniscient snarky computer that whispera sweet nothings of death and decay in my ear while smash things with wrench.
I needs my System Shock, bolly.

Right, I was going to point that out. That worries me, along with the fact that they confirmed Bioshock 3 even before we've seen anything for Bioshock 2. I really hope Levine gets involved to some level.

2K Marin is heading up by Jordan Thomas, who worked on Fort Frolic for BioShock. Prior to that he was Lead Designer of Thief - Deadly Shadows and the guy responsible for The Cradle.
Given his track record I could think of much worse hands for BioShock 2 to be in.

I'm sorry but that's the worst argument I think I've heard against adding new features to a game. If developers were stupid enough to think that way then we wouldn't have ANY new multiplayer games.
While I admit a straight up run and gun multiplayer in Bioshock would be pretty dull. I could see some fun scenarios like a Big Daddy (protecting little sisters) vs splicers. They could add a plasmid/weapon purchase element with Adam to the multiplayer game (ala CounterStrike).

actually thats a lot lower than i was expecting
Yeah, put me in the camp that said, "What? That's it? Really?", when I saw the number of sales. It must be a sign of the times when we expect a fantastic game to sell many millions of copies, instead of just a couple.
