At the end of last week's Bungie Weekly Update (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=13931), we find the following cryptic data transmission, under the headline title 'The Smuggler':
REPORT: CONTAINMENT FAILURE
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility; [delta site] has experienced catastrophic specimen containment failure. All apertures into facility will be locked until further notice. Atmosphere evacuation and [reduction of ambient temperature] protocols have already been enacted. Request maintenance and security detail [at earliest opportunity]. [8 minutes] elapsed since initial containment failure.
REPORT: CONTAINMENT FAILURE
Waiting for maintenance and security detail. [32 minutes, 9 seconds] elapsed since request.
REPORT: CONTAINMENT FAILURE
Still waiting for maintenance and security detail. [24 hours] elapsed since request.
REPORT: SECURITY BREACH
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility; [delta site] has experienced a security breach via emergency [slip stream space] transportation conduits. Emergency [slip stream space] transportation conduits have been placed in recursive mode to contain unauthorized hostile lifeforms. Request emergency security detail. Still waiting for primary maintenance and security detail. [2512332 hours, 14 minutes, 6 seconds]elapsed since initial request.
REPORT: DERELICTION OF DUTY
2401 [PENITENT TANGENT] has been lax in the areas of maintenance and security.
The ring in Halo 2 was referred to as Delta, or Installation 05. 2401 Penitent Tangent is the Monitor of Delta, and was captured by the Gravemind in Halo 2. Being that the Gravemind moved from Delta onto High Charity in Halo 3, we could assume that Penitent Tangent went with him, leaving Delta to wonder where its Monitor went.
2512332 hours is 104000 days, or 287 years.
Speculation: GO!
At this point, given the information at hand, all I can really say is: "Yes, please."

I read that in the update too, but couldn't make anything of it without digging too deeply into story stuff. Hasn't a 3rd-person prequel rumored? I know that wouldn't go with what you described, but it'd be cool nonetheless. Personally though, I think Bungie needs a little break from their baby to explore new IPs. I'm sure most of them are pretty sick of it at this point in time.
Elongated story line is elongated.
Don't get me wrong, I actually liked the Halo series, but I think MS is stretching this game so far it just wreaks of money>game play.

If they keep the quality up, I'm not complaining. Along with Metal Gear, it's one of the few title's that have maintained relative consistency, quality-wise.
However, I really don't want to see anybody besides Bungie make a "proper" sequel.

I hardly think that Halo 3 was a cash-in. But yeah, this smells of a reboot.
It worked SO well with Alien 4!

I read that last bit as a hint of a future Double XP weekend, a la Living Dead. But I certainly do not have as much of the Halo lore under my belt as you, Zanz...so I'm likely way off base.

Have we even gotten a confirmation that the PJ Halo project is actually a game?

I have always hoped for a more detailed description and battle with just the Flood or just the Convenant. I would love a COD styled game with more "large scale" battles and such.
I am not sure why people would have an issue with a good game...any game...in any world being released. It seems like people think there are a certain amount of spots in life for games. There are not. If they do a good job(they appear to have in the past) then how in the hell could this be bad news. We have new IP's, Sequels, revisionings if any of them are good...it is good.

If it's Halo 4, I'll have a problem. Master Chief's story is DONE. Remember, "Finish the fight"? The Fight = Finished.
If it's expanding the Halo IP with a new story, protaganist/whatever, I would happily accept it.

I am not sure but that seems a bit...heavy handed. I can't read the future so I won't decide until the game comes out and I hear about it.
Obviously his fight isn't over if you watched the end. So that doesn't make sense to say its over as it's pretty clear that it's open for more. Again if you have a problem with a good game I can't argue with that...but it seems like having a problem just for the sake of having a problem.

His fight with the Halo's and the covenant are over. If they start bringing those back just so they can say "OMG Master Chief HELP COVENANT LOL" I will be pissed. Bungie makes good games. I enjoy them. Halo 3 was well worth $60 to me, because I got to FINISH THE FIGHT. I want Bungie to make something new. The only reason they wouldn't make something new is because they want to milk Halo for more money.

That is not true. You and I have no clue if people in that company, maybe not all of them, feel that there is a future story to tell. Also as with the Flood there are other enemies that could be possible within the world. I just can't see being pissed over someone MAKING a game. Its counter productive.

Lol, pretty much. It'd be interesting to play another game from the view of the Covenant, imo. Go from the beginning of the Spartan project and the origins of Chief, then end by playing as the Covenant taking over Reach or something like that. I don't think there is enough material to warrant playing as one side the whole time. Just an idea.

Not to burst anyones bubble here but... Frankie LEFT Bungie to ensure that the Halo IP was done right as Microsofts owns Halo. I'm not sure why they put this on their site unless they're still getting a piece of the cut when Peter Jackson does his Halo: Chronicles thing... whenever that is.

If they didn't think that fight should have been finished in Halo 3, "Finish The Fight" was not a good advertizing campagin.
Also: I said earlier that if Halo 4 was a new story, I would accept it.
I'm not pissed at them making a game. I'm pissed at them for keeping at the same IP when I think it would be better for them to do a new IP or a different part of that IP.
If Halo 4 was good, I'd still buy it. But I would much more gladly buy a game with Bungie starting a new IP.

This was posted at the end of this week's update:
LOG: QUERIED ADJACENT FACILITIES
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility [alpha, beta, gamma, epsilon, zeta, and kappa sites] have all replied [systems normal] within expected constraints. This would tend to signify that the containment failure was purely mechanical in nature; perhaps a manufacturing flaw. As no [outside agent] has accessed [delta site] in the past [874068942 hours, 4 minutes, 46 seconds]—[allowing for a 61360 hour, 54, minute, 2 second margin of error]—sabotage would seem unlikely.
LOG: REQUEST UNANSWERED
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility; [delta site] is currently being held at [.01 atm] / [184K]. Local maintenance and security hubs have failed to reply within expected constraints. [Bumping maintenance and security request up] to [quadrant oversight].
LOG: REQUEST UNANSWERED
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility; [delta site] is currently being held at [1 atm] / [278K] as atmospheric seals were showing signs of stress. [Quadrant oversight] has failed to reply within expected constraints. [Bumping maintenance and security request all the way up] to 2401 [PENITENT TANGENT].
LOG: UNAUTHORIZED ACCESS TO FACILITIES
LF.Xx.3273 research and containment facility; [delta site] emergency [slip stream space] transportation conduits have been accessed by unauthorized parties.
LOG: FILED COMPLAINT TO INSTALLATION 00
2401 [PENITENT TANGENT], monitor of Installation 05, has been lax in the areas of maintenance and security. Requests for aid in said areas have gone unanswered by both 2401 and [subservient] systems well beyond expected constraints.
As to what it means, I haven't the foggiest idea, though the time at the end of the first part comes out to over 99,000 years if I did my maths correctly. Also it lists two atmospheric pressures of delta along with two temps in Kelvin, and the change between them seems to be drastic if I remember those scales like I should.

Yeah, I remember them saying that they'd still oversee all of the Halo projects, and help in some development areas (most likely artwork and level design).
I hope it's a Halo MMO. Who's with me? A subscription-based Halo. That would print money.

Is it really surprising...is it even worthy of "rumor" tags...to think that another Halo (or MGS or FF or Mario or Zelda) game will be coming out? Really?
:boggle:
Have we learned nothing from the gaming industry? They LOVE sequels to cash in on proven IP...just like Hollywood does.

No doubt! I quite enjoy certain IP (such as Halo...or the Rambo movies), and I LOVE sequels (I enjoyed the carnage of the last Rambo film, despite Stallone's plastified face from multiple plastic surgeries).
I don't think there should be any surprise, however...it's sensible to invest in a proven product.

Do you mean the documented fleshy-ness. Thats not all from the operations, thats mostly from misuse of HGH. He has spoken about it before. Its a typical side effect you see in men who misuse HGH and soft bone tissue begins regrowth.
Pretty sad.
In fact I hope he gets some MORE operations...he may look less like a fleshsack.
BOT. I would love another Halo game.
I'm in until the raping of the franchise. I know it will happen eventually, because no series remains consistently good all the way through, but I hope they can get a few more good games out of it before the cart racing title hits.

If we get another Halo game I would like the following improvements.
True multi player coop like Gears of War and Army of Two Not just having a couple of characters that have no true interaction with each other.
For multi Deathmatch I would prefer the sniper rifle be nerfed because any team that gets it pretty much wins

I think you could reach a little further than that if you were making a list of possible improvements.
Me, I'd like to see that level that we saw at E3 in 2004 for Halo 2. The original New Mombassa was a fucking warzone. They showed a level where enemies were being dropped in from everywhere. It looked like a war, and not the dumbed down level with tight corridors and cheap ass snipers it would eventually become.
That was my biggest disappointment with Halo 2, and subsequently, Halo 3. The scale of the war never really becomes apparent, because they never show it. The biggest battles, while fairly big, are nothing compared to watching hundreds of soldiers storm a beach on either side of you. When they provide that big war element, (which the RTS Halo game might feed quite well) I'll be ready to get really excited. Until then, I'm cautiously optimistic about any single player experiences. I already know the multiplayer will be solid.

No one is forcing anyone to buy or play a game. And it costs us nothing until we plop money down on it.
I hope I hope.
Love me some good Halo campaigning through that universe. And I miss the music.

I believe that it was on a G4 E3 day two rerun I watched last night. But I noticed on their little ticker at the bottom some news that most likely is related to this.
It stated that Bungie had canceled their announcement which had been alluded to on their website because they were asked by the publisher of the game to wait.
A short time after that bit showed up, there was a bit from Microsoft noting that there would be a special "event" to announce the new game from Bungie.
Here (http://www.bungie.net/News/content.aspx?type=topnews&cid=14782) is a link to a news post from Bungie with an image of the splash page and the explanation.
