View Full Version : Jack Thompson Accuses Rockstar Of 'Obscene Assault'
Oddmaker

Jack Thompson is at it again. This time he is accusing Rockstar of an "obscene assault" on his character. Apparently on the Liberty City Stories website, there is a series of fictional emails from jt@citizensunitednegatingtechnology.org (C.U.N.T.), and when you click on them it only gets worse.
When you click on the fake e-mail, banner headlined at the tope of the home page, from "JT," the Miami, Florida (Liberty City) anti-violent video game crusader, you will find that JT (Jack Thompson) likes to surf the Internet for pictures depicting deviant sex acts by teenage girls. Additionally, there is at the site an audio ad featuring a man whose name is "Jack" who is found naked by a mother in her son's room. Bisexual pedophile Jack Thompson is the combined message."Grab the Full Story over at Game Politics (http://www.gamepolitics.com/).

It was funny for a few seconds, then it just became sad. Rockstar are already unpopular and this isn't going to forward their cause at all.

Say what you will about tits and blood Jack, but parody is well inside the lines.

Say what you will about the "cause;" this is perfectly in character for the GTA series. The violence is what makes headlines, but the humor is what makes me love it.

Can he get them for libel on this? Just seems like a bad idea, and also not that funny, really juvenile in fact.
Not that I like Jack Thompson, he should really be convicting a criminal somewhere instead of going after the game industry.

I don't think it's sad at all, Jack would sue the internet if he could. Rockstar is having fun , I'm enjoying it.

Okay, perhaps not sad; more like petty and pathetic.
I think you need to chose your battles wisely. Rockstar should had just let this one go until they release their next installment of the multi-million dollar hit in the GTA series. Why the hell should they even bother with this? They should just let the money keep rolling in while JT gives them that much more free advertising... ..Scarey but JT are my initials too... ..maybe they were talking about me.
I think it was funny but not a smart move. It would have been much easier for them to not paint a larger target on their backside. I wonder if all of this will affect the ratings board when their next games are up for review.

"Rockstar are already unpopular"
Yeah, those millions of units sold show how much people hate them and their product. Being unpopular among some small minded twits that get screen time is very different from being unpopular with 18-34 year old males.

Hustler v Falwell suggests no. There'd have to be much more than this.
Furthermore, since they are merely alluding to him and not using his name or organization, it'd probably just get dismissed outright if he tried it.
He has no real recourse, which is why he doesn't even bother with one of his famous legal threats.

Hmm.. interesting.. That would be hilarious to see..
Judge: Will the real jack Thompson please stand up
*Jack Thompson stands*
Jack Thompson: Rockstar is making fun of me!!!
Rockstar: We are not. We made up a character called Jack Thompson and gave him a totally fabricated personality.. He bares no resemblence to you, it's just a coincidence.
Jack Thompson: You're making fun of me!!!
Rockstar: No, sir, we are not. Unless you are a bisexual pedophile named Jack Thompson, and have some relation to being a/in C.U.N.T., then we are not making fun of you.
At that point I'd have to ask, which way would he go? He admits all of that, and wins the case, becoming much more of a loser, or he denies it, and everyone including Rockstar laughs their asses off.

Since when did "juevenile" and "Petty" fail to describe Grand Theft Auto games? This is exactly the sort of "mature" schoolyard humor that I've come to expect from the series, and I've been entierely happy with each installment of it.
Jack deserves to be parodied in my opinion. The man can't say three words in public without appearing a complete buffoon and deserves only our ridicule.

I know that they are definitely targeting Jack Thompson and his ilk, and yes, it may be distasteful in some respects, but Rockstar is actually performing the service that we all wish we could: telling these people to step back and evaluate what they are REALLY saying--that technology is not nor will ever be art, and will, in fact, rape your children and kill your mother. The "testimonials" section is utter hilarity--for example:
“I was a happily married man – two kids, a wife, a mistress and an almost unnatural interest in strippers. Then, I got hooked on the internet. Now, I have no time or energy for infidelity, as all of my time is taken up planning family vacations and helping my kids learn about history using the enormous resources of the web. It has certainly ruined my fun.”
- Marcel Crayon, Carcer City
and
“I am a mentally unstable sociopath and pedophile who liked to prey on unsuspecting children. Now, because of the internet, everyone is only too aware of the dangers posed by creepy men befriending young children. It's quite simply ruined my life.”
- Derrick Hale, St. Paul’s High Security Mental Asylum.
and, best of all
“I never believed the government lied to us, or wasted tax on frivolities like unnecessary wars or government perks. Now, thanks to the horrors of the internet, I have discovered the truth. I hate the web. I preferred living in ignorance.”
- Name withheld
Honestly, I think it is hilarious. And I am sure that Rockstar has lawyered up and crazy Jack will be able to do absolutely nothing about it, which I am sure was one of the points all along.

Funny.
And for those nervous nelly's among you who think it is "dangerous" to stir up trouble by making fun of someone stupid like Jack Thompson, chill out! Stupid people need to be mocked. That is a normal societal pressure that makes sure people don't get too full of themselves and at least try to fit in and act neighborly, or something. Jack Thompson definitely needs to be laughed at as much as he can be.

Now, come on, it's not as if ol' Jack wasn't already engaged in a campaign to make Rockstar look like they're training all young men to become violent sociopaths.
And I think, legally, they're okay. This is satire of a public figure, he's made himself such by whoring himself on TV for anyone who will point a camera at him. Plus it's not as if they said his full name, showed a picture of him, or anything to specifically point that they're talking about him. It's inferred, obviously, but I'm just outright giddy at the prospect of all of his cohorts looking up this website (because he decided to make a huge deal about it, no less!) and trying not to laugh.

If someone was trying to sue and discredit me publically I'd be sorely tempted to call them a C.U.N.T. publically. Because they are. Few people deserve it more fiercely than those who will employ backhanded cowardly legal strategies to cencer and control art.
As for looking petty and immature. Maybe. But the credo of the creative team is to be bold and unafraid of public opinion. That's what makes the GTA games so popular and sucessful and fun. For them to sink into protracted legal stratagies and calm public discourse hardly seems in character, if anything it would be like admitting defeat. Instead, this sends the message that they're going to hold strong to their goal of being nasty and rude and violent without actually trying to hurt anyone. More than can be said for someone who would drag petty namecalling into COURT. What an ass.

No. As you will find in any novel, on the very first page where the publishing information is listed, "this book is fictional. Characters within have no relationship with real people, and if it appears so, it is merely coincidental" or something like that. They never say Jack's name. It could be JT from N'SYNC for all we know...
But I think this is very funny and holds true to Rockstar's parody style. I like it and Jack should stop being such a pussy. He's obviously searching for a fight with Rockstar, why else would he be on their website checking them out?

Nobody has pointed out that the acronym from that site is actually C.U.N.T.F.L.A.P.S.? I think this is great. Maybe if they try hard enough, Jack will actually burst an O-ring and end up just one notch left of where he already is on the mental acuity meter.

I think it's way too vague for anything really. Jack is a pretty common name, plus the only time they say it is in the audiocommercial. The "email" didn't say that "JT" was looking for pictures of nude teenagers. He was looking up stuff for his neice and saying that he didn't find what he was looking for and it's "not for the faint of heart." You have to be looking for it to see it really. And considering it was news only after Mr. Thompson sent out an email trying to explain the thing as slander.... I doubt many people would pick up on it. It would be really ironic if it were an accident, but I doubt that.

It's kind of interesting watching people get into pissing matches like this... normally I'm one to let stupid people keep blowing hot air and making fools of themselves, but sadly people like Jack "Mad Dog" Thompson need to be shut up. Sadly, this kind of thing won't manage to do that. Some people are just too stupid to learn until it hits them where it counts... in the pocketbook. It would be nice if some big publisher wasn't scared of all the other idiots in the government that would jump on them if they found some way to countersue Jack and hit him real hard. It almost seems like it would be in T2 Interactive's interest if they found some way to do this, but the fact of the matter is that all this hoo-ha over Hot Coffee and everything else that Rockstar makes (I know they didn't make Hot Coffee, the mod at least, but anyway) only manages to give them free publicity. Fortunately for Rockstar, I doubt this kind of publicity hurts their sales at all. Unfortunately for them (and the rest of the industry), all of this may come back to bite us in the ass in the future. If Rockstar manages to tarnish their image far enough, it will look very bad for the whole industry. You'll have people like Hil and Leland (and now Granholm, who is socially a moron by the way... more on that in a moment) jumping on the bandwagon and pointing fingers at Rockstar and saying "See, this is why we can't trust the video games industry" and pushing legislation through that will hurt it very much. The petty part of me loves Rockstar making fun of him, and the professional part of me cringes when I see this stuff.
Now to the Granholm thing... I'm a grad of the University of Michigan, and at the general graduation in April 2003, she was the keynote speaker. She essentially insulted all graduates of UM at their own graduation and got booed throughout the whole speech. Brilliant woman  , and she's running Michigan... almost makes me happy I moved away (though I do miss the north country, it is gorgeous).

The folks at Rockstar apparently have testicles so large as to warrant their own gravitational field. Them boys are doing some damn fine work by giving an "official" industry flip off to Jackie. And it certainly may as well be on behalf of most of us as well.
All we can really do is grumble in our forums and such and perhaps occasionally send a death threat or two... but this is much-deserved ridicule from an entire company (and no small one, at that), and a rather fun way of making the message to big, bad lawyer-man crystal clear.
Mosty funky.

It's all because older generations have this misconception that videogames are only for children. I'm 25 and don't want all my games being E rated. I'd like a company to cater to my age group and not be punished for adding some softcore sex scenes. R rated movies can get away with that, why not M rated games? Movies and games of the same rating shouldnt be held at a double standard.

I think that certain people are being entirely too retarded to realize that there are other certain people having a great time mocking certain other people and through all this the first set of certain people are getting much enjoyment while not actually accomplishing much. Therefore the second set of certain people need to stop pursuing the first set of certain people while the third set of certain people only start to hate the second set of certain people even more.
You figure out what the heck I just said and then sue me for libel if you can figure out what it all means! :D
