Hollywood does it again!
Our Hollywood Wednesday continues with word that Ryu and Ken will not be in the upcoming Street Fighter film.
Not enough room for them, according to the official movie blog (http://streetfightermovie.net/?m=200806), as this one is about Chun-Li and diverting attention would be unfair on all the characters.
"There are just way too many characters in the Street Fighter universe to cram them all into one film," said producer Patrick Aiello.
Eurogamer article (http://www.eurogamer.netarticle.php?article_id=145119)
Yeah... too many characters. So you just take the main ones out to make room?

Why are they considered the main ones? Just because they are the most popular doesn't mean they are the main characters. All the characters have some sort of story going on in the game. You can call them all main characters to some degree. Who cares. No one was gonna watch it if Ken and Ryu were in it anyways. At least here they can try to craft a decent story if they just concentrate on one character.

Chun-Li is the most boring of all the SF characters.

Only playable characters in the original game

And 2 of the 3 to make it to SF2

I never thought this would be a good movie to begin with but how do they believe that Kristen Kruek is enough of an actress to carry a film as a lead actress. Even one as obviously bad as this one will be. I have a feeling this will kill her career and she will beg to get back on Smallville.

Exactly. The original Street Fighter game had 2 characters, Ken and Ryu. They're the only actual "main characters".

Only playable characters in the original game When was the last time anyone cared about or mentioned the first game? Exactly.
I think this is much ado about nothing.
I'll stick with awesome animated SFII movie methinks. I honestly can't see how this will be any better than the last live "action" effort. The only plus is it can't be any worse.

By all accounts, the first Street Fighter was pretty mediocre. I didn't even know much about it until a few years ago. That's not to say there aren't people who have played or liked it, though, but Street Fighter 2 was really the beginning of the franchise as we know it today.
It's a big bucket of meh, either way, both for the movie and the fact that Ken and Ryu won't be in it.

Ken and Ryu are obviously the main characters. Some things you just can't even argue.
They're the only playable characters in the first game. They're 2 of 3 to make it to the second game. They're two of 3 to make it to the third game. Their the focus of the prerelease material of the fourth game. Their the subject of all the anime and comic books. And their the most copied characters in other fighting games.
That being said, I think it's intersting how most american SF material manages to focus on Guile as being the main character.

I got that part, but if this movie is supposed to be about Chun Li I don't see why Ken and Ryu have to be in it. Is Capcom or the movie studio obligated to have them in everything SF related? I'm sure they'll get a mention.

That's true. This isn't an SF movie afterall. It would actually be ridiculous FOR them to include Ken and Ryu. Unless it's about her going through the tournament to capture M. Bison or whatever her story from the game was about.
I'd honestly just like to see a tournament movie that is strictly tournament with everyones story having to do with only the tournament. I hate all these stories where the nobody entered the tournament to win. Rather, everyone entered to find some lost brother which makes no sense at all.

Chun Li as the main character will be a disaster. Looks like Hollywood just wanted to take a video game property, stick a woman with big boobs in it as the lead and appeal only to the young teen crowd. This will be an even bigger disaster than originally thought. We're looking at DoA level cataclysm here.

Ken and Ryu need their own movie anyways. Their story could take up a whole movie. Plus I can't think of any actors that would do a good job playing them. Unless they got Chinese actor Donnie Yen to play Japanese Ryu. I don't know who could play Ken. Guess they could put a red Gi and a blond wig on to whoever was playing Ryu.
The decision not to include them doesn't really piss me off because the Chun Li Movie will most likely be lame. I'm talking Jean Claude Van Damme lame. Zhang Ziyi should have been hired for the role.

I have never seen worse use of grammar than what can be found in this thread.
Ryu is the only character that is in every single game in the extended series. The Japanese film, produced with oversight by Capcom, focused on him. Ken is Ryu's rival. Anyone who does not grasp that they are the main characters is too immature to be speaking in public forums. Grow some brains and stick your dick in something wet and warm kids, it'll do wonders for ya.
What's next? A Doom film where Hell is not involved? Or maybe a movie set in Middle Earth not based on any canonical Tolkien writing! What a horrible future in which we live.

Chun Li is probably the most recognizable Street Fighter character of them all. It made a lot of sense to me that they would choose to focus on her when trying to tell a (coherent) Street Fighter film.
Ryu and Ken are great characters in the game series, but they had nothing to do with the plot of Street Fighter II. Chun Li's revenge back story, simple though it may be, is much better premise for a film than: "I want to be a better fighter; oh, hey, a tournament; and there's my friendly rival!"

Well Rex, I don't know that Chung Li is the most recognizable character from SFII, but I'm also not convinced that Ken & Ryu are obviously the main characters. I didn't play the original game and I haven't seen any animated movies about Street Fighter. I played SFII and SFII Turbo a ton growing up. I think my experience is probably pretty widely shared in the movie's target demographic. I never thought the game *had* main characters, and I think that's probably a pretty widely held belief in all people who are not hardcore fans.

SF Movie: FAIL! AGAIN!
Adam Blue

I don't buy the 'first game' argument. It was mediocre and barely even popular. Capcom used the premise to craft the sequel, and added many new stronger characters. Out of the main character realm, Chun-Li fits in there. As for Hollywood, more people will be interested in watching an action movie with a hot female from a video game.
Best fighting game movie, or video game movie for that matter: Dead or Alive.

A Doom film where Hell is not involved? That's already happened. :p
I feel there is more to SF than just Ryu and Ken. Exploring the back story of another character such as Chun Li makes for an interesting premise, even if the movie is likely to suck.

That is awesome, that's like a Super Mario Brothers movie without Mario and Luigi. This is what annoys me about Hollywood and the producer's response solidifies what I have always thought, that they will go ahead and create a movie regardless of whether they are capable of actually telling the story that is true to the source material.
If you don't know how to do something, go ahead and do it anyway.
PS I liked the live action SMB movie.

I guess you can call starting out with the spin off as interesting.

I'm sure there's a writer/director out there able to craft an entertaining story about Ryu. A man of times long gone seeking his way in a modern world, testing his mettle against the best the world has to offer, including his best friend and rival, Ken.

Sure they're the main characters, but they're the main characters in a fighting game! The character's stories, are never what I play a fighting game for, they're window dressing. I play to fight with my friends, or brother but not incur injuries or break furniture.
The truth of it is, you weren't gonna like the movie no matter what so who cares?

This is all just a misunderstanding. You see, the producers are under the presumption that there are actually people out there who will be going to see this movie for its engrossing story. Simple mistake.
Seriously, there should be an element of camp and kitsch to this movie. That is the only way to make it work.
