Gamespot has just put up a preivew to Chromehounds, a new mech game from the Armored Core folks, From Software. Looks like they've kept alive the best concept of that series, customization:

The game will also feature one of the staples from From's previous mech games: the ability to make your own custom battlebot from a massive amount of parts, ensuring the number of mechs in the game will be absurdly high.
Here's the GameSpot link. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/chromehounds/preview_6133131.html)

I'm such a mech whore, I'll probably get a 360 just to play this. (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/chromehounds/screens.html?page=4)

My apologies if you get that Gamespot interruption ad the first time you click the link. I don't know how to get around that...

I'm not even remotely a mech person and this has me interested. And a custom mech? *drools* I'd really like to snag a demo of this should they ever release it and give it a whirl. This could easily convert me to the genre.

I'd like to see the game in action and get some impressions of some sort before I get all psyched about it. From Software hasn't pleased me with a mech game since the first PS2 Armored Core. Though I really do hope this shapes up to be fun in the end.

The trailer looks and sounds good - maybe I will have to get a 360 afterall.

i'm not a massive mech fan. always struck me as a FPS in which the reason to move around had been largely removed. stand opposite each other and pile loads of shots into each other :-/

however, this does look good. apart from the damn depth-of-focus, which i've waxed on before...

I am really pleased with all the extra detail the new generation is giving us.

Everything just looks a lot more solid and real. I had Armoured Core 2 on PS2. I was very impressed with the upgrade options on it. Although as far as i remember i hit a wall in one of the missions and i was just crushed by the sheer weight of upgrade options to try and complete the mission :(

I am very intrested in this title now. It looks yummy. Hopefully it will play yummy :)

Actually this mech looks speedy and also packs firepower.

Looks like a pain in the arse ;)

Mechs: Lookin' good

Backgrounds: Meh, it seems like they took one apartment complex and copied/pasted it over and over again. That's very cheap and underwhelming, and something you can do easily with the UT2k4 engine on even a not so modern PC with only a moderate performance hit. Not very next gen.

I don't like these fugly plain grey...wastelands or whatever either. It looks like someone tried to make a wide open area with the HL1 engine.

Am I nitpicking here? No. I just think this doesn't look special at all except maybe the mechs. Very current gen. I think you people are crazy raving about how good this game looks. Or maybe you're just talking about...the gameplay? Huh. Yeah, it looks like a decent looking mech game from what they've shown, gameplay wise. I guess.

Yea, the surrounds need a lot of love, but the mechs them selves look great. Even if it isn't all that polished graphically, I just hope the core game play is solid.

I loved the mech sniper in trailer, doing a Saving Private Ryan impression. That was hillarious.

Sign ya boy up...

Customizations with hundreds of parts AND on Live. And the 100 battlegrounds don't sound to shabby either. They must of gave up on Mech Assault.

FS-From Software

GS: What will set Chromehounds apart from other mech games?

FS: Chromehounds offers gamers full customization of their mechs (known as Hounds), and team strategy is one of the key elements to success in the game.

How about some procedural apartment buildings?

If youre such a mech whore why dont you play Steel battalion? It is by far more ambitious than the mechassult-esque offerings of chrome hound. Bundled with its massive 40 button conroller it is by far and wide the most immersive simulator: The "Mechs" in chrome hound look ridiculous. lol
The best apart: its avaliable now, its live or single player, and has a well entrenched online community.

Dag-Sabot you tell your boss at Capcom he's sold as many as he can at $500, it's over...

Heh i have no love for crapcom, they are by far the WORST publisher ive ever had the unpleasantness to deal with. That being said it is a great game that ive played for over a year solid. Anyone whos interested, check out the capcom hating fansite at www.steelbattalion.org
oh, btw: The controllers can be bought for as little as $120. Small price to play, if you're into real VT games not these limp wristed games, so called mech games, theyre trying to pawn off. Chrome hound just looks bad*.
*my opinion only.

I think Hounds maybe great if it's like AC. Again, customization and multiplayer is my draw. Not to mention capcom quit working on the third installation of the series. O_o

I would play, except that the wife said it was "that controller or her." She makes more than me, so...

P.S. And exactly what is a "real VT"? The only "real mech" that I know of is that robot the bomb squad guys use.

Pfft Zorper, even if you made more than her you wouldn't be getting one... Now if she didn't have a lady's anatomy. O_o

heh, i guess i was trying to say that it tries to simulate a technology that hasnt been devised yet. V.T= vertical tank (it seems "mech" is a licensed term). Since it is a simulation you're concern is more toward fuelstate, ammunition, aquiring targets and locking on, trying not to fall over etc. All the while trying not to killed the other guy worring about the same thing.
C.H seems to me more of the same fare as mechassault or AC just more polish no substance...a concept all new 360 owners will have to get comfortable with as games that will trully push the xbox 1.5 wont be out for quite some time yet.
-which is not to say that it will suck, it might. If you are hardcore consider SB, thats all.
:D
