Treasure, those wondreful fellows behind Ikaruga and Gunstar Heroes have stated that their next gen game for the Xbox 360 will be 2d.
In addition to working on Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance titles, Treasure is also stepping into the next-generation with Xbox 360. Does that mean we should start waving goodbye to 2D?
Absolutely not! "There is no major difference in terms of gameplay for the games that we develop regardless of whether it is for console or handheld because they are all based on 2D action,"
No futher details are known at present, but check out 1.up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3143607) for more info.
Treasure sticking with 2d gaming? can I hear a "wooop!"?

wooop!
Assuming that was supposed to imply that I'm happy someone is sticking with 2d gaming. Just because we have 3 Dimensions to visualize in, doesn't mean we need access to all of them to make a fun game. (Viewtiful Joe!)

Ok first of all what, do they mean by 2d : gameplay or graphics ? For example is Ikaruga 2d or 3d ?

With only a few exceptions Treaure titles have always been good. Even their "bad" titles have been above par (although I have yet to play Advance )Heroes) but somthing like Guardi heroes with high resolution sprites and thse wonderful backgrounds Treasure do so well would be a little slice of heaven.

Treasure is perfectly capable of making bad game ala Silpheed. Regardless, this is great news. Long live 2-D gaming!

Indeed. If I'm not mistaken, Stretch Panic was also done by Treasure, and (IMHO) it wasn't a good game. When they stick with their strengths, however, (see Gradius V) they make one hell of a title.

Nah Silpheed was great, if you squinted and held the controller upside down. And pretended you were doing something completely different.

Ikaruga is 2D gameplay with 3D graphics. All the objects\enemies\etc. are built of polygons, but you can only interact with them on a 2D plane.

Good. I want to see some fan-frickin-tastic 2D gaming coming out this next generation. With all that extra processing power, there are some cool things that could be done with 2D. Maybe it will catch on and become the new 3D.
Treasure has done 3D games...

And WarioWorld, which I quite enjoyed. Though apparently no one else did.
Never before have I enjoyed collecting garlic so much.

Silpheed wasn't really a Treasure game -- apparently a couple of Treasure guys were asked to help out late in development and this was enough to get the Treasure name slapped on the box, but it originated with a different developer and the bulk of the game was done by a non-Treasure team. But Stretch Panic was a Treasure product through and through, so...
Treasure is just elite.
Can I please get a port of Radiant Silvergun to Xbox, though.
