Gamedaily.biz (http://biz.gamedaily.com/) is reporting (http://biz.gamedaily.com/features.asp?article_id=10534&filter=hollywood&email=) that Bits Studios has acquired the rights to create video games based the Sergio Leone classic trilogy of movies featuring Clint Eastwood as "The Man With No Name."
Here are some highlights of the story for you to mull over.
In a deal with MGM Interactive, Bits Studios has acquired video game rights to the three Sergio Leone movies often called "The Man With No Name" trilogy. The 1966 classic "Good, Bad," which starred Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef and Eli Wallach, was the last in the series but will be the first to get the interactive treatment.
No publisher is attached yet, but the game in on schedule to ship next year for PC, Xbox, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable
Huh. I dig Westerns and those movies are classics. I just hope the video games do the series some justice, no pun intended.

Aw man, this idea sounds more horrible than The Godfather game.

Fuck. The Good the Bad and The Ugly is one of the greatest movies of all time, bar none, and now it is going to be raped by a shitty video game. After the Godfather was licenced by EA I thought that this pathetic trend could not get any worse. Then Scarface also bit the dust and now yet another absolute classic is going to follow suit. It is things like this that almost make me wish for another video game crash. Even when movie based games are decent, I still get bored with them because they are constrained by the movies. Plus, despite their reputation, all of these movies are rather short of enough entertaining gameplay without the devs simply pulling some fucked up bullshit out of their asses [which seems to happen more often than not].
My only consolation in all of this is that the games are shipping for current gen systems next year so it is likely they will be lost in the post 360 / impending PS3 / Revolution launch hype machine. I seriously hope that the companies making these games start to lose a shitload of money on them as that is the only way they will stop being made. In my opinion, movies and games should be treated as entirely autonomous entities that should be kept completely separate at all times. I want western games as much as the next person but I will be sticking with Gun to fulfill my needs because at least Neversoft has put some actual effort and original thinking into that game. I would much rather play a slightly flawed game that the developers actually put some effort into over this plagiarized [yes I think that word is justified even though the rights were purhcased] bullshit anyday. That is probably why Deus Ex is still my favourite game.
In short, fuck this unoriginal bullshit. Now bring on Indigo Prophechy.

Nice rant sTubbs.
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is one of my favorite films, but I shudder to think of the game it will become.
Now, if I want to be optimistic, I can imagine some interesting open ended gameplay concepts being derived from the Fistful of Dollars/Yojimbo/Red Harvest framework, wherein a loner walks into town and plays two sides against each other. But that would require talent and vision. No, they'll probably just turn it into a bland corridor shooter.

Anyone know what this dev studio has done before?
Isn't this announcement listed somewhere in the Book of Revelations? I'm pretty sure it's in there, near the back. Way to usher in the end times, people.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly is a brilliant film, an utter masterpiece. Only if the game was also a masterpiece could it do it justice, so this is indeed a tragedy. My hopes for this game shall be written on this rock...

I always push for more western games, its a fantastic setting for a open ended rpg, way better than another fantasy based world.
That said, "The Good the Bad and the Ugly" is tied with "The Wild Bunch" for the best western of all time, and making any movie on its level into a game is a travesty.
Actually, the wild bunch could work... Anyone remember that last scene?

Sounds like you want to read more about Gun as that is pretty much what you just described - although maybe it is a bit more linear than what you are looking for. From what I have read it is overall very open ended - maybe even approaching GTA levels.
Also, early murmurs about Red Dead Revolver 2 [presumably that is what the 'Untitled Western Game' shown by Sony at E3 is] are pointing towards a more GTA meets the Wild West type of game. Certainly a cool idea to say the least, but personally I would love to see a company create a western game with freedom on par with an Elder Scrolls title. Perhaps Bethesda could use a change of setting for Elder Scrolls V?

The elder scrolls has a very defined setting, changing it to a western would be like making the next final fantasy a modern first person shooter.
But yes, bethesda would be great for a western rpg.
Isn't this the company that did that Constantine game?!?
That thing was pretty crappy.

Come again?
