View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

As all the students start to settle back into their routine, their last weekends of little homework is here. For the rest of us working stiffs, we welcome back football and wonder how much gaming time will be lost because of the game. I am playing Stronghold 2 right now, as well as some CoH and just a little bit of WoW. What are your plans for this weekend?

I have to work :( Very little gaming for me. Doing a VOIP installation. Hopefully I can squeeze in some Burnout.

Well, I don't know if any of you gamers have heard of this one, but it's a table top game that's known in most places as Beer Pong, and I intend to be fairly addicted to it this weekend. The best feature of this game is that if you loose, it means that you get a drunk that much quicker.

Well, played the first session of a new Arcana Unearthed game a friend is running. It's highly modified, with mostly new races... I'm playing a Wyndian (winged person) Gunmage. Pretty awesome so far, looking forward to the next session.
Other than that... I might go out tomarrow and spend some extra cash on a game or a book... somthing like that.
I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to be playing, come to think of it. Need to help my brother and fellow guild-mates run an instance in WoW, but that should really only take a couple of hours. After that, I think it's pretty much free reign though I have this strange feeling I may be outdoors most of the weekend as I'm off, which is a rarity in and of itself. Maybe some DS while I'm in the sun, who knows.

WoW and Painkiller.
My guild just now beat Onyxia. There was some random warrior in Org begging for a guild to take him to Onyxia so he could forge his Quel'Serrar, so we dragged him along, and now he's the proud owner of a giant glowing sword :)

Well I'm not a student and I don't like football, so I've got plenty of time to kill. Considering this week is night shift as well, I just wasted the last hour or so cleaning up space on my harddrives. Now I plan to put together a box here out of spare parts to give to a friend who's computerless (it's only a p3 800, but at least he'll be able to play starcraft and watch DVD movies).
Edit: Oh yeah, and I'm slowly playing through Chrono Trigger on my PSP.

The super-nice people at Cryptic are letting us do a bit of beta-testing over the weekend, so I'll be hitting that up. Besides that, probably CoH, X-Men Legends, and maybe some Diablo 2 for nostalgia's sake.
And lots of comic-reading to calm myself from all the school crap.

I'll be putting time into Lord of the Rings: Third Age which I rented so I can play for the first time. I'm not a huge fan of the LotRs, so the complaint that most of my friends had about it being the LotRs characters with different names doesn't come through to me at all. As for stealing the system from FFX, hell, I happen to think that's a good game to steal stuff from.
I also rented Stella Deus, so time will go into that as well.

Guild Wars, I can almost taste the ascension it's so damn close but the closer to it I get the worse the pugs seem to get which is kind of hindering my progress.
So when that gets too frustrating I'll go off and start up Mafia which I just got. Still looks good for the age of it.

Radiata Stories by SquareEnix for the PS2. The game is beautiful and I love the art direction. The battle engine is simplified and all of your characters are completely AI controlled, but I'm still having a semblance of fun right now. The dialogue is ridiculously annoying, as the game's characters barely take themselves seriously, especially the lobotomized, immature protagonist. The characters in the game remind me of Suikoden 3--how they look, anyway. Also, the linear fields where characters go from map to map resemble suikoden, though much more beautiful.
The game also has day and night cycles, NPC daily/nightly routines, etc which can be realistic OR highly annoying. Depending on what/who you need at what time of day.
I'm only a little over 6 hours in but i'll make progress today, pausing for a few hours in the afternoon to catch the RedSox vs. Yankees game.

I finished up Dungeon Siege II the other night and I am trying to decide what to go onto next. I plan on playing with the AOE III demo some more, but truthfully, it has left me a little disappointed thus far. They have said much about the graphincs in it, but the damn UI covers the entire lower half of the screen! I dunno, my jury is still out on this one...
I think I may take up Fable or Darwinia while I wait for the Winter Assualt to begin!

Let's see, trying to catch up, picked up the Warhammer 40K Dawn of War Demo just the other day, so I may have to pick that one up as it has totally rekindled my love of RTS games, also, after I get out of work today, I may have to look into picking up Neverwinter Nights. Both games inspired by recent threads here. Thanks guys!

I know exactly what you mean. I hate kicking everything (it was fun at first) and I would stop kicking environmental things but I feel that I'll miss a nice hidden item. So I keep kicking.
The only other thing that bothers me is that the Circle button initiates actions (opening up a save menu) but if you press it again it negates actions. I have trouble getting used to initiating with Circle and then using X to further the actions in the status, item, etc. screens. I always close out of windows as a result.
Oh, and for the first time in a very long time, I loathe the main character. Ridley is correct: he's a total fucking idiot.

Sorry Everlost for introducing you to some good and great games :D but he is right in recommending the RPG Gothic 1 and 2 (great) and Sacred Gold (good). And, Everlost is perfectly correct in recomending Wizardry 8 - a great game as well. I also enjoyed Spellforce - a somewhat RPG/RTS. Morrowind was very good as well, but it can take forever and a day to finish (especially if you have the 2 add ons).

I'll be playing WoW, that's undeniable. My friend also finally unearthed his old genesis so I'll be going old school. Sadly he owned me at NHLPA 93, but I eked out the Madden 93 win.
Probably end up with some Halo 2 action as well.

Liquid, you need to do some Ebaying, Amazon, or Half.com. The game cant be THAT much, and it pains me to see you resort to begging each week Gothic is mentioned :(
Also, has anyone ever played Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land for PS2? It came out quite a while ago and is basically unknown for the system. I looked at some reviews and it got pretty good numbers from the critics. It is basically a PC RPG for the PS2. I picked up the game a couple weeks ago for cheap but havent played it. I hear it's dungeon crawling (Wizardry style) at it's console best.
I own Wizardry 8 but the time needed to play that is crazy. I'd spend upwards of a half hour on some battles, especially when you are fighting like 80 fucking ants who have their own turns--you have to wait them out. Still, a great game if you have the time.

Well I wouldn't have to if you'd only lend it to me  :D
Gothic 1's going an insane amount on amazon, and at that price I don't think the sellers are moving any units. The game's delisted from retail (a million years ago), and those who have it have either lost it or want to hold onto it. So I turn to EvAv for a helping hand :) But most people fall into the 2nd category of Gothic owners...
Everlost will attempt what many have failed! The impossibly generous act of lending Liquidize105 Gothic 1!

Wow, dude... if the game is THAT good then shouldn't you just go ahead and buy it?!?! I don't get it. I've purchased other "classic" games for near- or above-MSRP-after-sales-stop if they were worth it. Was glad to have them as a permanent part of my collection.

I know this is horribly taboo, but since you already own the game, is downloading a torrent illegal? You have let a friend borrow it, but you still legitimately own it, correct?

Oh, and I've been playing Radiata Stories freaking nonstop today (Saturday, even though it's technically Sunday now). The game is graphically beautiful, though in a more artful style rather than a polygon-pusher. I love the attention to detail this game has. The overland map travel (Suikoden 3 style, traversing through fields/towns) is restricting and you are confined to narrow paths, but that's one of the few flaws I've found so far. Another Suikoden 3 flavoring (or two) is the character art, as well as collecting well over 100 "friends" that you can create a party with at any time. There are still primary story characters that you'll need in your party to progress the game, but when not adhering to the plot you can form your own groups and go adventuring with any of them. It's a playable cast the size of Chrono Cross's, or bigger.
The day/night cycles and preset daily routines of NPCs brings the game to life as well. You can follow a guy home and watch him crawl into bed (unless he locks his private residence door) and wait until he gets up in the morning and follow him to work, the church confessional, to the bar/restaurant. It's fun to see people greet you in the wee hours of the morning, or harrass you when you come home from being out all night. It's not as robust a system as Ultima VII's, but it reminds me of that sometimes. You also need to get to stores during business hours, too...and the day/night changes affect who you will see or be able to recruit. Once I saw a black-cat man outside the castle in the middle of the night, but he fled when I talked to him and havent seen him since. Also, Radiata Castle and surrounding city is absolutely huge for a console game.
Oh, if you cant tell, I'm digging this game. I've learned to overlook some of the childish dialogue, because other characters are perfectly adult-acting and not typical anime-queer. I also found a secret item recently that made me smile (i am jaded and rarely smile or laugh at my games): it was an equipable item that makes you walk like a stereotypical homosexual...it has no other purpose but to make you look a fool.

City of Heroes. Only game I've played for the last few months. And since Issue 5 of CoH came out I've been locked in the seemingly endless cycle of testing new ways to make my now broken Spines/Regen Scrapper (Melee Character class in CoH) viable again. It's starting to get tiresome, but the specter of making the wrong decision and having to live with it until the game ends at level 50 keeps me experimenting until I'm certain.
I promise myself sometime in the next few hours I'll take a break and give the old Dungeon Siege II team a go, to try to reach Act III. ;-)

That's funny, I was super-worried about my dark melee/regen becoming broken, but I haven't had as many problems as I thought I would. Turns out Instant Healing wasn't as vital to my survival as I assumed, so I can safely use it as an "oh shit" button. Did they nerf spines as well as regen?

I bought a DS on Friday (along with Advanced Wars DS) but I haven't had much time with it yet since I was on the Ohio State campus most of yesterday at the OSU/Texas game. That was one of the best college football games I've ever been to. Unfortunately the Buckeyes came up short but it was still a heck of a game. I plan on getting some time with DS today.

Well...no they didn't nerf spines. but..I used to really push the limits of what my character could do. Not Herd, but I did go up against +4( 4 levels above my character level) opponents pretty regularly.
*looks at floor*
solo.
In The streets.
^_^
I've been told "This was not what the developers intended" *chuckle*.
I've gotten it to the point where I can fight about 8 +2 Minions, and a mix of +2 Lts and minions...or a +2 Boss (or two) with a minion or two around them. THat seems to be my limit, and that's not too bad. Not as good as before but not too bad.But I'm still making little tweaks here and there and trying out different playstyles.
I use my Instant Healing regularly...since..doing what I am doing..the whole fight basically turns into an "Oh Crap" moment :) *grin*
I was QUITE worried about Issue 5 based on what I saw on the Test servers. My build *Required* instant healing and I did not put any enhancements in the other Regeneration power, Integration. So when I5 hit, you can see how messed up I was since Integration effectiveness was reduced, AND Instant Healing could no longer be a toggle.
But I've almost gotten over it..though I still get Flashbacks about my days with my Super Scrapper ;)

Ah, see, I focus a lot more on running missions than outdoor fighting, so it hasn't been as big a deal. But even the outdoor fighting I've been able to take pretty close to what I could before as long as I have IH cued up. I think I'll need to be tossing a couple more time enhancements into it though.
Good luck getting caught up and back into things! :)

Heading into week number 3 without power thanks to Katrina, so I'm left hanging out with my DS, which has been a lifesaver when it's too damn hot to do anything else (I have been surreptitiously charging it at a local Burger King). So far I have finished off Kirby and Minish Cap (which was so good it could even make the miserable weather temporarily forgetable). Just bought Mario & Luigi to help pass time this week. I have really started to dig the strange intimacy of portable gaming, but as great as it has been, I'd trade it in a heartbeat for a little airconditioned console gaming.
