Word leaked last week that a new Oddworld game was being developed, but it was nothing but word. Today, we get confirmation from the president of Oddworld Inhabitants, Lorne Lanning, courtesy of GI.Biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/lanning-confirms-new-oddworld-title). Reports of a new title emerged last week, following a speech given by Maxis co-founder Jeff Braun at Wilfrid Laurier University, where the industry vet revealed that he was working with Lanning's studio.
"I can confirm that we're working with Jeff on Oddworld stuff, but that's all I can say at this time," offered Lanning.
Braun stated that the new title would use development tools able to create content on a par with movie animation, with assets suited for both film and games.
"The rendering tools are getting so good now for 3D animation that you can literally create a linear animation and create a video game using the exact same objects," he said.
Have we gotten ANY games that have come close to blurring that line between gaming and actual film animation?

Not yet but here is hoping with this generation or maybe even next-gen that it is and will be possible. Remember, the Gamecube gave us Resident Evil 4.

I wasn't too happy with Munch, but Stranger's Wrath was great.

I actually missed that one. I'd love to try it out if they released it as an Xbox Original.

I would say all the Oddworld games were significantly better than anything else at creating a cinematic experience. At the very least, their cutscenes were far superior to anything anywhere else in videogames.
Also, Much was great, but the controls were a little touchy and it had a bit of a learning curve. There has not been a game in the series that has been less than stellar in my opinion. It sucks that, after the first game, it never got the success it deserved. I certainly understand Lorne Lannings' frustration with the games industry. I can' think of another company that got fucked over like his did. His is the only company I can think of that constantly put out amazing products in concept, originality, and production values, and still failed.

That upcoming Naruto game for the PS3 looks better than the actual show imo. Does that count?

Me too! If it ever makes it to the Marketplace I'll buy it in a heartbeat just for the hell of it.
I wasn't thrilled with Stranger's Wrath though. It still had the charm of the Oddworld universe but the mediocre FPS gameplay kinda ruined it for me. They should have sticked to their original formula instead of trying to bank on the popularity of shooters.

Rachet and Clank PS3 looks far and away the closest to a Pixar film.

Man, I still dont see how people see that, its not even close, its a very very very good looking game but not even close to pixar.
It does look the closest as far as games come but still so far away.

I disagree. I know it's written on the back of the box, but I think it comes close to the humor of a Pixar film not the quality of animation.
