Here's something I'd never thought we'd see again. Seaman 2 (http://ps2.ign.com/articles/649/649723p1.html).

The first one was mildly entertaining for 5 minutes. But a sequel?

I'm willing to bap has never even heard of this game before and is posting purely for the headline punnage.

you will need to give your Seamen to a baby-sitter if you expect them to survive.

Kind of an odd choice for platform, I could see maybe the DS because of the microphone to interact with it and the portability(especially with the success of nintendogs) but the ps2? Means it has to ship with a mic, which probably raises the price a bit. Hell, a psp release with a little usb mic would have been a better idea.

The game won't appeal to the masses ... so they went with the console with the biggest user base, the PS2.

Yes, this would be a perfect DS game.. but I wouldn't buy it for anything else, considering that I own the original.

Yeah I think DS would be a great choice of platform for this game. The first game was very unique, I mean how often do you get Leonard Nimoy as the narrator for a game. You did run out of stuff to do pretty fast though, and I couldn't seem to get that damn ugly seaman to say much of anything besides "food please" and "no you're stupid." I guess we had a real love-hate relationship because I loved to hate him and call him names.

In fact, my Dreamcast is plugged in right now w/ Seaman and the mike hooked up. Nifty coincidence!

Can I ask why Sega can make this crap, but we can't get an update to Space Harrier or some of Sega's other great franchises?

5 minutes is being generous. It was a cool idea, and I thought it would be better. But it didn't hook me.

umm...no. I definitley did. I worked in retail when this came out actually. Borrowed it for one night and that was enough for me.

This one is so ripe :D

I remember the days I would tell some kids mom that their child would even be able to talk to his seaman.

I liked this game alot. It was wierd and fresh and full of character. I don't think it deserves it's own genre with a thousand spinnoffs or anything, but I'd be willing to revisit it one more time if they can improve the tech.

"It's seaMAN".

Stupid fish said that to me a lot.

Seaman was the only game I ever actually intentionally got up early in the morning before work to play. I didn't want my Seaman to die on me in the middle of our discussion about American politics.

If you think the original is boring because you never played it past the first day... I don't know what there is say, because the whole point of the thing was to raise it until you could talk to it.

Anyways, I also think the DS would be a better platform. First off, if it runs on real time like the original, then being able to take it with you on to go makes things a lot easier. Second, the built in microphone.

Yeah, it is a strange decision. The game and DS belong together. They were born for each other.

They did, Harrier got a sequel although I think it was arcade only) called Harrier World and the PS2 is getting a revamped version later this year.

I know everyone seems to feel that the DS would be a better platform for the game because of it's built in microphone, would the DS cards be capable of storing the ridiculious amount of voice acting that a Seaman game requires, though? Because I found that the most entertaining part of the game was having long conversations with my Seaman about politics, gaming habits, and the role of religion in modern society, and I would hate to lose all of that.

Hmm, never even thought about it like that. A very well drawn conclusion.

Not to mention Rez, which is basically Space Harrier meets cyberspace and trance music. The Panzer Dragoon series is arguably another spiritual descendant as well.

Barring some miracle, this game would be terrible on DS. It doesn't have the processing power to achieve the level of speech recognition they're shooting for on the PS2 version. Also, it doesn't have anywhere near the storage space on those dinky cards.

On top of all that, the graphics would be crappy.

I think that's probably for the best. As if the fish-with-human-face thing wasn't creepy enough on the DC, they have to bring it to a technologically superior system. That face just wasn't horribly lifelike enough for them. Leonard Nemoy better still be the narrator.

I really liked the first game, but I didn't think the sequel would ever make it to the US. Seaman was ported to the PS2 years ago in Japan, It had a special limited edition gold medalion controller that I assume furthered the sub-plot about the seaman and his true love who were forced to evolove back to humans before they could be together.

after a bit of digging I found some pics of the controller:

the website from the pics is still active too:

I think the new controller isn't nearly that sweet, though I did hear that the old PS2 controller (the gold one) will work with it. There are pics of the new one at that seaman.tv site.
