Gamespot (www.gamespot.com) has posted an article (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/08/news_6132842.html?part=rss&tag=gs_all_games&subj=6132842) and screenshots (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox360/action/sonicthehedgehog/screenindex.html) of the next gen Sonic the Hedgehog game.
"We are proud to re-create our famous friend, Sonic, for a new generation of gamers on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360," said Naka. "With Sonic the Hedgehog, we have gone back to our starting point, more than 15-years ago, to reinvent the attitude and speed that made our hero a legend. The 'rebirth of Sonic' will offer an unparalleled sense of speed that is only possible using the processing power afforded by the new systems."
Sonic the Hedgehog will make its debut on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime during 2006.

WHOA... Wasn't Gold(Super Sonic) xtreme'd.... I thought those few parts were cool, in sonic 2 was it.. O_o

Bleh... They've finally done it. The "Sonic fans" have talked Sega into making another game around "speed". Guess that means that the gameplay will consist of pushing forward on your analog stick until you're at the end of the level...
Sonic levels were always my least favorite of the Sonic Adventure games...

I was going to make some snarky remark about "reinventing Sonic" by giving him a gun and tattoos to enhance his "street cred" with the kids, but then I looked at the screens, and dammit if they don't actually look pretty cool.
Besides, I guess they're already filling that "niche" with the new Shadow game, aren't they? :(

I don't think that -you- understand how Sonic games work. The "speed" element was never there, it was an illussion. Go play Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it's not that fast of a game. There is lots of jumping, just like in Mario only it usually involves going much higher and hitting mutliple bumpers. As well, the levels were non-linear.
Now go play Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 as Sonic, it's not the same thing at all. It's boring, and repetitive. The levels are almost entirely linear, often times going into really stupid 'cinematic' scenes that involve not letting up on the analog stick until they are over.
An entire game based around this sounds about as fun as Xenosaga.

3 things i want form the new sonic.
1: to play only SONIC PERIOD
2: Speed levels so fast, I feel wind in my room
3: Platform levels that have good design and difficult enemies

Not much else as Sonic in the original SA. And SA2 took out -everything- else.

He's actually right about Sonic being more platform based than speed based. The Speed elements were there, however. Often times, parts of the gaming were finding and surviving through the places where you needed that speed to burst forward ahead.
You know it is funny, when movies went from silent to talkees many actors were out of work. They could not cut it in the new version of the medium. In many ways, Sonic has been the same. He simply has been unable to cut it in the 3d version of gaming. I blame the camera of SA and SA2 for this. They were never able to get it right for the few platform levels, and they made the speed portions little more than, indeed, holding the analog stick toward and pressing the jump at the right time.
What are people so excited about anyway? That was not gameplay, just a tech demo of how excellent the 360 is. Seems like developers love using it!
