In the "Collector's Edition" category, 2K Games sends along word that gamers who pre-order Sid Meier's Civilization IV through select retailers will get automatically upgraded to a Collector's Edition of the game.

2K Games, a publishing label of Take-Two Interactive Software, Inc., and FIRAXIS Games, world renowned video game developer, today announced the Sid Meier’s Civilization IV pre-order program. Customers who pre-order Sid Meier’s Civilization IV at participating retailers in North America will receive the Pre-Order Edition of the game at no additional cost.

Shipping on the same day as the regular version of the game, the Sid Meier’s Civilization IV Pre-Order Edition will feature: collector’s packaging, a CD soundtrack of the game, a keyboard template, a tech tree map and a spiral bound version of the manual. The Pre-Order Edition will be offered through participating retailers while supplies last.

The fourth game in the PC strategy series that has sold more than five million units, Sid Meier's Civilization IV is a bold step forward for the franchise featuring spectacular new 3D graphics and all-new single and multiplayer content.

Sid Meier’s Civilization IV will be released this October for PC. For more information please visit www.2kgames.com. (http://www.2kgames.com./)

Well that whole collector's edition for essentially nothing extra thing's pretty sweet. I'm extremely averse to pre-ordering games, let alone paying full price, since there's always a pretty good chance they'll bite. Civ IV's probably one of the few that there's no possible that will happen. Just when I was hoping I'd never have to go into EB again too. ;)

I'm sorry. I fucking HATE the look of this thing. I'll wait a few months and check people's reactions before I think about purchasing it.

I'm hoping Amazon.co.uk get this deal so I can pre-order from them. I'm really looking forward to this.

On behalf of me, myself, and I, here's what the "collector's packaging" looks like (click to enlarge):

They did that with 'Pirates!' I believe, too, with the DVD edition. Pretty smart move, though it's not as big a difference between, say, the standard and collectable version of WoW or WC3. Those were massive tome-like packages.

Yeah. It has that Louis Lamour book-like look to it, but the game box is obviously not leather like his books used to be. :P

It is a PC game being released during the Fall Crush. I'll totally just wait for a price drop on this due to the time it is coming out. Lord knows I'll have other stuff to play in the mean-time and I still have Civ 2 and Alpha Centauri if I get a crazy Civ-craving.

If they released had released in the summer, I'd have plucked down the money without pausing (like I did for DungeonSeige II), but when they are competing against so many other games. . . screw it. It's a PC game and will likely fall in price much faster than console games.
