From the Hollywood Reporter:
Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton will star in "Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time," Walt Disney Pictures and Jerry Bruckheimer Films' adaptation of Ubisoft's popular video game. Mike Newell is directing.
In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in sixth century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world.
Doug Miro & Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the many games created by Jordan Mechner.
Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are exec producing.
Production is set to start in July.

It probably would have been cool to have a Middle Eastern hero in an American movie, but I guess they couldn't cast someone who hated freedom. I have nothing against Gyllenhaal, but casting someone who was or looked 'Persian' could have been cool.
I'd rather watch Donnie Darko again.
(Nothing against Jake -- not interested in a PoP movie.)

This is a strange turn of events in more than one way.
Before this casting decision, I was very excited about the possibility of a PoP movie, and my girlfriend was not.
After this casting decision, I was not very excited about the possibility of a PoP movie, and my girlfriend was.

There isn't anything wrong with the name. It's wrong that they gave him a name. All this time as the nameless Prince. Layer Cake went the whole movie without giving away the man guy's name.

Can we just have Will Smith do it instead? I mean come on..... Jake Gyllenhaal seriously? Id rather see Will do that than Jake, and Will is a really bad choice for the role as well.
This post is the cue for all game nerds across the internet to say why their casting choice would be so much more refined.
EvAv is always consistent, at least.

There is not any good choice for this role. Mostly because there isn't a good reason for this film to be made.

Seriously, Gyllenhaal is massively underrated, and I don't understand the hate. Expect the same grit and charm he brought to Jarhead.

Damn, beat me to it. That was the best headline ever.
Not a Jake Gyllenhaal fan. Always looks smug.
But...wait and see. He's rarely a bad actor and it might be fun to see him in a family adventure.

Thats if Ewe Boll did it.
I don't know shit about this movie, but Gyllenhaal is someone i never wanted to see cast in an action movie.
Christ one of those French dudes from District 13, who climb all over the place and jump buildings and shit would have been fantastic for it, if you're gonna go white guy pretending hes not white.

I had forgotten that a PoP movie was even happening, which shows how much weight my opinion should even have here. I suppose casting could have been worse, specifically how I can't say. While Gyllenhaal isn't the best choice for the role, we can't by default say an actual Prince of Persia would instantly be better for the role. I could be wrong, but his day to day peril is most likely less than his digital counterpart, but then again maybe he does fight hideous sand creatures via the power of time manipulation while running on walls. I haven't been keeping up on my subscription to Princely Matters Monthly.
It's not nearly as aggravating as Dennis Hopper being cast as Bowser, he's not even of the Koopa race. Pffft.

I'm sad that it's not the actual prince of persia like we thought it was gonna be. The linguistic application of a Rockwell painting was too delicious to be true.

While I can understand the concentration of attention on Jake Gyllenhaal, I'm suprised no one has commented on the Princess' name. Tamina? What the hell is wrong with Farah? They afraid people will expect to see Farah Fawcett or somethin?

I understand the need to have an actor with box-office draw in order to make a popcorn movie profitable, so I think this is a good choice. There is probably a wonderful Arabian actor who would be much better suited for this role, but who would not make the film studio nearly as much money.

Everybody runs around thinking they need a name. The need better trailers and presentation. Any guy directed to appeal to the masses would have done just fine even as a new comer. I don't think I'll be seeing this at the theater. And Aishwarya or any other girl would make a better Farrah. AND THEY GAVE THE PRINCE A FUCKING NAME! Grrrr...
