French gaming site Jeux France (http://www.jeuxvideo.fr/beyond-good-evil-preproduction-actu-139816.html) spoke to designer Michel Ancel, who spilled the beans that a sequel to Beyond Good & Evil is already in pre-production, however Ubisoft has not yet signed off on the game. A google translation (http://www.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.jeuxvideo.fr%2Fbeyond-good-evil-preproduction-actu-139816.html&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sl=fr&tl=en) of the French article: "I work on Beyond Good & Evil 2. We are in pre-production for a year, and we conduct research work in a small committee. But for now, is to step roughing, Ubisoft has not yet given its consent," said Ancel during the interview. This doesn't mean he's working behind Ubisoft's back, just that the publisher has yet to okay full funding for the project. The original Beyond Good & Evil was a critically acclaimed adventure title from 2003, but plagued by poor sales.

The thread title needs a touch of clarification but, if true, this is awesome.

Something about there ACTUALLY being a sequel doesn't sit right with me. Now, I will reserve judgment until I play it (which will happen), but I'm not sure the game really needs a sequel.
I agree that the first game was unjustly ignored commercially, however, the game has almost obtained a cult-ish level of praise ever since. When I played it, I couldn't put it down. The game was great, all the way through, including an awesome cliffhanger ending. However....maybe this would be best to just leave alone. I'm thinking of the Matrix right now, as a good example. It's quite possible that a sequel could be good.....but it might not quench the thirst the gaming community has created. I wouldn't want it to take away from the goodness of the first game.
Another thing....I did love the game.....but thinking back on it, there were plenty of things that I didn't really have fun with, but just pushed through so I could see more of the story. It wasn't a flawless game. So if you haven't played it, please don't let the post-hype make you think this was a 10.0 game or anything. It just had a lot of charm, and did a lot of things right.
I dunno. I'm pretty ambivalent over it, actually. In any case....if this game does get made, I will most definitely play it. :)

I loved Beyond Good and Evil right up to the final boss fight...
I broke a wavebird and a fan, and my girl left.
Still want a sequel though.

Ubisoft, please green light this project. The first game was fantastic, we want a sequel. Just give it a better marketing campaign this time, it can sell units.

Hunh, I don't recall having trouble on the last boss. Wasn't the only thing he did is made your controls go backwards?

Because the fact it was planned as a trilogy and left on a complete cliffhanger doesn't leave room for a sequel? Did you even beat the game?

I remember having a really hard time with the timed dodges, and then becoming very frustrated when it would knock you back down as you were getting up.

Did you even read his post? He said he doesn't want the next two to sulley the name, even if it was originally concieved as a trilogy. Like the Matrix Trilogy.
I completely disagree with him, but still.

They released it at the same time as one of their own blockbuster titles, Prince of Persia.
Even then, both of those were released during the Christmas season- amidst tons of other games from other companies.

I don't think you understood what I meant. I did beat the game....my post stated that. I am speaking from the mindset that sometimes it's just cooler to leave things at a cliffhanger ending. The Matrix was my example. Another example would be The Chronicles of Riddick. That movie was intended to have sequels, and has an ending that could set up seemingly infinite possibilities.....but it's almost better that there isn't any physical sequel, as the ones in my mind are probably all better than anything put to film.

Never played this one. Will have to pick it up now that it is on Steam for cheap.

BG&E needs to be backward compatible and released as an Xbox Original. Or, perhaps, they could make a new engine, remake BG&E, and then use that engine to make a sequel. The point is, they need to increase awareness of the franchise if they want to continue it.

Actually, I bought BG&E and loved every minute of it. :) Granted, I didn't buy Okami for my PS2, but I HAVE grabbed it up on my Wii, and am loving that game as well. Heck, I still go back and boot up BG&E every now and again to give it another run through. The story was just GREAT.

Or ICO, or Shadow of the Colossus. No accounting for taste, I guess. I mean, why play these really meaningful games when there's Halo, Madden, etc. to play?

Excellent news. I know it's been hinted at before, but official confirmation is beautiful.
Hopefully everyone puts their money where their mouth is and buys the fucking game! If that happens, this game will sell 1-2 million copies. ;)

Day one purchase for me, great game. And I think it premiered at $20. I bought mine a couple weeks (literally 2) after it came out and it was $20. I think I even remember IGN saying how everyone should buy the game because it was so cheap on top of being good.

If memory serves, it was released full price and was dropped when Ubi realized it was getting lost in the fall mania.

This kind of rumor has been teased quite a few times, so I'm not going to lose my skepticism until some of the BG&E2 assets are shown.

I bought it a week after it released for full price, and it was literally only a couple of days before I saw it for $20 still new in the wrapping.

While Beyond Good and Evil wasn't perfect, it was a strangely satisfying gem. Although, the way the game ends makes me ponder the effectiveness of a sequel.

I really, REALLY hope that this is true. BG&E is a gem and it's a shame that a sequel hasn't already been made. It's also the game I hold up as the prime example for why the fall rush is inherently evil.
This news made my evening :)

I didn't read down this thread, so I'm sure some people agreed with you, but on the off chance no one did...you are not alone.
An awesome first hour that quickly goes downhill when you realize that the game shows off every trick it has in that hour (Photography! co-op partners with special abilities (all two of them)! Decent stealth sections!). Too bad it didn't have the courtesy to get exciting again after that. And for a game that was trying for a sweeping story, the world felt painfully small.

How is it not?
Ha, that's an impossibly open-ended question. I will not attempt to answer it.
But my attempt to answer why I didn't walk away feeling particularly moved or interested or engaged: The story, as I remember it, started out good, with a likable hero, a cool underground fight the man sort of arc, and then it quickly downgraded to some really third-rate sci-fi Chosen One let's make this a trilogy because every other franchise is these days drivel. (And isn't the final boss...spoilers...some kind of intergalactic talking plant? It wasn't cool in Halo either. Not bad in Mass Effect, though.)

I loved the first game, and looking forward for this one.
I hope they'll release it soon.
