View Full Version : Nearly 20 Million 360s Sold Worldwide
Microsoft announced today (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=18654) that they're the first who sold 10 million consoles of the current generation in the U.S. while their global sales reaching the 20 million mark with 19 million 360's sold worldwide.
Microsoft: Xbox 360 First To Reach 10 Million Sold In U.S. Microsoft has announced that, by the latest tally, it has sold over 10 million Xbox 360 units in the U.S., the first of the latest generation consoles to do so, with global Xbox 360 sales reaching 19 million units.
Microsoft says the launch of Grand Theft Auto IV has pushed Xbox Live membership to over 12 million players worldwide, as well, though it made no breakdown of paid gold versus free silver subscriptions.
IDC research manager Billy Pidgeon said in Microsoft's statement that the Xbox Live number made the service "the largest community in the connected console games sector," and said it represented "the greatest growth opportunity in the console market."
Microsoft's Entertainment and Devices VP Don Mattrick said of the figures, "History has shown us that the first company to reach 10 million in console sales wins the generation battle. We are uniquely positioned to set a new benchmark for the industry.”
I thought there were more 360's around. Quite nice numbers, but I just expected more.

Note that there are 25 million Wiis out there worldwide and way more than just 10 in the US, but because it's not HD MS does not count it as a next gen console. XD

Heh thats cause you spend your time at Evil Avatar where its assumed that everyone has a 360. Its funny but I first joined this site because I was looking for a site that was PC centric. But then after awhile I stopped visiting when I came back a year or so later it was 360 land.

Seems foolish from a business perspective, honestly.

Neither do I.
I own two of the 20 million 360s (one's broken though). Really though, one of my favorite consoles of all time. Up there with the PS1 and SNES.
I was a big fan of the PS1 and PS2, but don't own a PS3 yet. I think the PS3 will be like last gen's Xbox for me. I'll pick it up later on and play the hell out of it, only for it to be replaced by the PS4 a year or so later. I think I'd really love to have a PS3, and play some of the great games on it, but it's more of a financial issue right now, especially since I already own a 360.

First, saying 19 million is ALMOST 20 million silly, they're still about ONE MILLION units short. They'll get there, but a million is still a million, otherwise we'd all be almost millionaires. Second, as much as I hate to say it the Wii has won this generation (so far). Microsoft and Sony chose to gamble on better tech at a higher price, Nintendo chose to gamble on a cheap console with a gimmick, and so far Nintendo has come out ahead. Microsoft should accept that they're number two, and stop with the blatantly transparent spin.

Of course they count it -- internally. This is a Press Release (Hype), they aren't going to hype up being #2. They have to spin it to be #1.
Sony will announce they are #1 at something (combinig PS3, PS3, and PSP) and all the PS2s sold worldwide they have the most powerful brand, etc...

I'm happy that the 360 is doing well, good for them. I for one don't count the Wii either. I know that I should, yet it just isn't on the same level. This is from someone with a Wii in the house (I can count on one hand how many times I've played it). From an economical standpoint yes it should matter (I suppose). Though, people don't compare the sales of luxury cars to average sedans; yeah they are both cars but they are marketed to different people, in different ways, with many different features.
As for Sony, I can also see them making their own spin report soon. What I truly wonder is if MS is going to go the Sony route and remodel the system like the Ps1 and 2 was.

Our goal: to reach 1 billion consumers. We'll do that because Xbox 360 will be the most powerful platform in the next generation, a platform that combines great hardware, great software, and great services to deliver games and entertainment that will truly redefine what it means to have fun.

With zero help from Japan, no "brand loyalty" to fall back on, and no one buying it for other reasons besides games, it's actually not too shabby. Again, comparing the 360 to the original Xbox it's done very well. Way better then I or pretty much anyone else expected. Shoot, I thought the original Xbox would fall flat on it's face Virtual Boy style.
Just read any post E305 or pre E306 game forum and you'll see that most expected the PS3 to simply steamroll the 360 the second it came out.

This party ain't over yet guys. We've still got several more years to go in this current "next-gen" cycle. And the Wii, despite everybody's own opinions about it's next-gen validity, is the clear winner here. This was a stupid press release from Microsoft - "We're special, we're number #1 in our own way, Wii excluded. My penis is the biggest, excluding the guy with the bigger one."

It's not really a stupid quote. Some people, myself included, decided to buy a new 360 while my 2nd was in repair. Since, it was only a few weeks since the failure of the 1st one, I decided to get the cheaper Core to continue playing.
Some of my friends, had their disc drives fail and since the 3 year warranty didn't cover bad disc drives, they decided to buy a new one instead of sending it in for repairs. The newer Elite models supposedly had quieter drives.
So, it happens. Possibly not in huge numbers, but it does.

True, in the UK itself, the PS3 lags behind the 360, but we're not singling it out here, right?

Interesting points in this thread?
1) The old' chestnut - will MS remodel/repackage the 360 midway through it's life as Sony did the PS1/2? - Not bloody soon enough. By July. Please. Throw a DRM unit rights switching one use scratchard serial # in the box, to give those with machines getting on 3 years old (and no services needed! thanks!) an excuse to rebuy. Capitalise on that install base! And a big fattie with a fast BDD (that could match DVD read speeds) for the high end.
2) "Reach" 1 Billion Consumers. Yes a little ambitious methinks. Well, as far as Xbox "brand" awareness goes - from near subliminal spots in Transformers/KnockedUp to other media, from Sopranos to US cartoons - I've noticed a lot of "product placement".
Has anyone, who reads a fuckton of comic books, noticed that Marvel Comics have almost exclusively had 360's in the pads of the FF, Ultimate X-Men, whenever a script calls for a "modern lounge room" - or a character/s playing video games there's been very suspicious looking 360's and pads around? Albeit with some notable exceptions where specifically the script specifies something different -for example, in the recent "Ant-Man" series (great read - cheap digest size tp's available everywhere!) - elderly cat burglar The Fox, had got a Wii, and needed the company of Eric (Ant Man) O'Grady to "enjoy" the console (cue panels of the swinging remotes around, seemingly WiiSportsTennis'ing - obviously inspired by the reports of old peoples homes loving some Wii) - or when J Jonah Jameson smashed up his LCD 40" Panel, there was no console to be seen - as you'd expect from ol' Jonah.
Obviously the "reach 1 billion people" BS was "code" for - we're gonna double the PR/advertising budget this time around. I'd argue 1 billion people worldwide would know what an "xbox" was (regardless of having played or seen one) - which definitely wasn't the case 3 years ago. But still - it is marketing bullshit, and my analysis of it is purely for academic purposes.
3) Wii. The biggest console in the world. No doubt.
It may not be "next-gen" , and as a launch buyer, massive Ninty fanboy since 1987 - who has been playing his DS for the last week and hasn't turned the 360 on except to watch DVD's - I don't think it "truly" is. There's not the traditional NES/SNES/64/GC "jump" in the tech, and as someone who loved the GC - and bought most every "key" title throughout it's life (and believed it had the best 1st party range of the last gen) - it's just hard to get excited about GC sequels with waggle for full "whack" (and that "whack is about $AUD 90 per MG, MP3 - ouch). Get me a Players Choice Line by June 26th (when we fiiii-nally get SSB down here, the game I wanted post launch..) and I'll jump in.
Besides my personal misgivings - whether you think the Wii is next gen or not - it'll be around longer than the PS3 or 360 (in some way, shape or form) - the install base is getting huge and Nintendo are still maintaining a massive price "buffer" on hardware they can string along for years to come. All the power to them.

My brother did the same thing, and now has two.
I have NO idea how many 360 owners have multiple consoles, but I suspect MS would be interested in knowing and may have some idea internally...perhaps. There's no really good way to tell objectively/empirically that I can think of.

What are you guys talking about?
They are counting the Wii as a competitor since Nintendo hasn't announced if they crossed the 10million mark IN THE US this month, and 650,000 more sold in the US might have done it.
But, since NPD charts use US and Canada it makes sense, since the Wii and 360 are neck and neck in NA, that the 360 holds a slight lead in the US still, because I'd guess the Wii has probably outsold the 360 in Canada.
Sure, it may mean a lot less than it did in past generations, but one of their goals was to sell 10million in the US before the competition, and since it may be the last time they hold the US lead, I can see why they want to trumpet it.
