Gamesindustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=11313) is reporting that the first weekend sales for Sony's new handheld has broken the DS's record by a considerable amount, double in fact. It is also reported that game sales were excellant but without a stand-out title, and no mention of UMD movie sales whatsoever.

The demand for the console is being met more than adequately, quashing worries about Sony being unable to cope.

nice one, i'd add to it if there was any stock left nearby

to stop people exhausting the stock they were only selling them with 5 games for the price of a small car

This place is reporting the UMD games are flying off the shelf...

From pspupdates.com, edited with better info: "Sony's PSP sold roughly 185,000 units in the UK alone this week [3 days], eclipsing the Nintendo DS' 87,000. [at launch] Twenty of the twenty-four lauch titles filled the Top 40 All Format Chart, with nine in the Top 10!"

Nothing short of a major success, I'd say.

The PSP sold 185.000 in 4 days compared to the Nintendo DS' 87.000 across 2 days?

And... that's smashing a record? Nice skewed statistics there, Sony.

I'm so proud of you PSP. I certainly hope you have some new games for you soon though. Surprisingly, I tire of Metal Gear Ac!d.

If Sony ever gets around to putting out a few more good games on the PSP, I may pick one up... I must admit, it's quite tempting. But at the moment, there is maybe one or two games out of the whole library that I would like to play. And I'm just now getting good games on my DS...

Euros have been so deprived, fresh lamb for the slaughter!

It's new release hype. It'll die down.

Walking around town today, I saw huge PSP promo posters and crap in the window of every store that sold videogames. Only one had any clear signs stating that they'd sold out. Everyone, even the general entertainment or electronics stores had pre-order schemes advertised for months. My games journo instincts were telling me that a quick survey was in order, but my fiancee has hurt her knee and wasn't capable of doing the round trip. I am interested in seeing how many places had actually sold out.

I guess it shows that if you hold back a product from one market while everyone else has it for a year, they will get pretty excited about it when it appears.

Well we did have to wait 6 months + for the DS aswell.

Good deal for Sony. I still wish they would bring some more stuff out for the freaking thing though. I was at a mall outside my area this weekend and the local Gamestop had no less than 5 (!) used psp's. I was shocked to say the least.

A good enough start for them in Europe. They can continue selling hardware now...if only they'd bring out some games for the damn thing! I see a few titles I'm intrested in the pipe, so here's hoping this time next year I can say that the PSP has a good lineup.

Has the PSP had a less than spectacular launch in any region?

To quote the Wolf from Pulp Fiction, "Let's not start sucking each other's dicks just yet."

Until GTA: Liberty City Stories comes out, I wont be as enthusiastic about it. GTA might make the system the first handheld I've bought since the original Gameboy back in the 80's.

I reckon I'll be able to hold out about a year until my techno addiction kicks in and forces me to buy one. Also I'm pretending to be a grown up adult now and I'm budgeting and all, and at the moment I'm saving up for 360 + launch games in my luxuries budet at the moment. The pain of saving money :(

GTA: Liberty City Stories is what will really sell the PSP in the US and EU markets. Just wait for the figures to come for PSPs and Games sold the week it comes out...

Wow. I kinda expected the euro launch to be a disappointment as hype seems to have died down for the device over here because of the lack of games. It seemed to me like public opinion had been turning against the PSP but I guess people are really happy buying UMD movies.

Not even close, dude.

The point is that over here (in AU, not EU, but similar rules apply), excitement hasn't been dying down.
The only people who've heard about the thing previously are the real hardcore.

The rest have only heard a: Sony hype, and b: articles by people who've read several articles in newspapers, written by people who are tech writers, not gamers. Maybe a few have been overseas or seen imported machines, but they haven't seen the lack of releases, or thought about the size of the MS Duo, or any of that.
They've only seen a lot of hype, and a launch line-up stronger than the ten-month-old DS line-up.
