Idle Thumbs (http://idlethumbs.net/) has a preview (http://idlethumbs.net/display.php?id=216) of the upcoming pirate based MMO, Pirates of the Burning Sea.
The actual gameplay, as I learned when I sat down for a demo with one of the game's mission designers, is very differently paced from most MMO games. At least in this release, all battles take place at sea. Your character only needs to return to land to get new missions, buy items, and so forth. Future expansions will add the ability to place towns under siege, loot, pillage, and other kinds of land-based pirate goodness. For now, battles will be ship-to-ship, although I was told that this release would allow boarding of enemy ships.
I would love to see more cross genre MMOs. This has definately sparked my interest.

So in order to raid and pillage you have to buy the expansion pack? Quite a pirate game.

Nah that's gonna be a free update, the first expansion pack is probably going to allow swashbuckling and so forth, including a whole level and experience system for that side of the game.

I talked to many of the dev team at PAX this year and they were completely great. They love their game and love their fans even more, so I really hope this all works out for them when they release the game over Steam.

Yes that's right, it's going to get a steam release.

Oh and the game looks amazing, by the way. The water physics and shaders are mindblowingly awe-inspiring!

The reviews will be great:

"This game raped and pillaged my time!"
"I rate it "Arrrr" for Radical!"

YES! A Pirate mmo! About time! The lack of pillaging sounds bad but ship boarding with the possibility of somer skilled fencing action could be very cool indeed.

Seems like this puppy may need a monster machine to run properly.

Looks decent. A pirate game needs stormy weather, and for now it seems only Remedy knows how to do realistic-looking hills.

Played this one at PAX, and it was pretty damned nice. It does take a bit of power to run what they were showing, but the code I played on was hardly optimized.

Was it fun though? I mean, do you play with multiple players on a ship, or does everyone have their "own" ship? Do you have to hire more pirates when they die? Can you aim each individual cannon, and do you have to fire them all, or is it done automatically?

Sounds like a cool idea though, although, they better not charge an arm and a leg for this. Think of how much content you get with a game like WoW, and that's $15.00 a month. If this is anymore than $5-7.50, I doubt anyone would pick it up as an alternative. Just speculating though, you know how everyone loves that on this website.

This could be very cool. Like The Wind Waker but with much larger oceans and land masses and other pirates roaming the open seas. They'd have to make the ocean be a continuous circle that you could start on one continent and sail all the way around the planet and wind up are you starting point if you wanted. None of that "what's this invisible wall out in the middle of the ocean?! I guess I'll turn back."

It is too dangerous to go any further we must turn back invisible walls like in wind waker?

Why can't all MMOs with vehicles be like Planetside or Bf2 even? I want team action for my pirate ship. If not another player then I have to assign an NPC to that position.

Instead of everyone be the best pirate captain, how about the guys who want to be the best swashbuckler or best gunner's mate (cannon). Or hell even the best ship hijacker (Stealth, swim and a grapnel along with a dagger between your teeth to silence the watchmen)

Are you on crack? Do you know -anything- about the MMO industry?

Why can't all MMOs with vehicles be like Planetside or Bf2 even?

Because they both sucked ass.
