View Full Version : [AoC]What Type of Server?

I've played MMOs since the EQ1 days and have tried just about every big retail one out there. I played (and quit) WoW on 4-5 separate occasions and now plan on playing Age of Conan when it hits shelves May 20. I think it'd be great if EvAv had a guild presence there, but what type of server?
This game is a PVP/RVR orientated game and I'm all about PVP. How about everyone else that's planning to play? PVP? PVE? RPPVP? RPPVE? This is of course assuming that servers are setup simliar to how there are in many games now. I have heard that there will be PVE, PVP, and RP specific servers though.

I've always been a PVE player but if there were a guild that could be joined right away (or as soon as possible anyway) I think I'm ready to join the big boys the PVP world. Especially since it's a Conan setting. You almost shouldn't have any other type of server.

I think a lot of players will sign up to the PvP server thinking it will be like WoW PvP servers and are due for a big shock. Completely open PvP is a big change from factional PvP - you're pretty much going to have to level in a group, or in private instances to get anywhere.

The server set up is currently listed as:
PvP
PvE

The game may be set up for PvP but that doesn't mean a PvP server is the right choice.
Lets look at WoW (as was inevitable). The only real difference between a PvP server and a PvE server in that game is that on PvP servers, you're flagged almost constantly (not in your own lands or cities), on PvE, you're not flagged at all unless you go to a Battleground or you tell the game to flag you.
That's it, the end, there is no other difference, everything a PvP server has access to a PvE server does as well. All playing on a PvP server means is that a 12 year old who bought his account with his mother's credit card can gank you endlessly fucking up your evening.
Now whether this is the same in Age of Conan I can't tell you, but if it is, then I see no reason at all not to go PvE.

Savok is right - you'll still have your various PVP instance "mini-games" and you'll still have the end game cities, keeps, and whatnot which should end up playing like giant FFA PVP zones anyway. If you're concerned about getting "ganked" on a PVP server in AoC then things could be potentially worse than in WoW as there will be no allied factions. Last I heard whether or not there will be any safe zones or not as on WoW's PVP servers was up for debate as well upping the annoyance potential even more.

To put it honestly, I've been waiting for a game with true PVP on the level of Ultima Online. If that's the way the PVP servers on AoC are going to work, consider me excited.

I think Ulitma Online's style of PVP is fine. I hope that AoC has at least a little protection for players of a lower level. I certainly do not want to be farmed by max lvl players for my starting gold!
Once I hear what people think of the beta (and if it sounds good) I'll begin looking for a server where a group of friends has decided to start. At least that way there is a better chance of survival.
Anyone here in the beta? It started yesterday, right?

I'm going for RPPvP. I love factional conflict and open PvP, and RP servers tend to have better people, even if there isn't any RP going on - less illiterate kids. I couldn't stand non-RP servers on WoW.

Yeah, but the beta is under NDA, so you'll have to wait for news. :p

The NDA only covers things above lvl 13 now.

I never played on an RP server, but you're probably right. I still cringe when I think of Barrens chat.

There are no factions - unless you mean player made ones?

Actually, I didn't realize that about the game, but reading a bit more about the guild features, it still sounds interesting.

As far as open world pvp goes you can attack everyone you are not currently grouped with, that includes guildmates too. Only the major cities are considered safe. No penalties for attacking players of much lower level either.

With sword swings being AOE, gankers can now see how many lowbies they can gank in a single swing.

While I do like open world PvP, no protection for new players is just going to close the game off and turn some away for people trying to get into the game 6+ months after launch.
I refuse to buy any MMO without a trial account so this aspect worries me a bit, as I'll likely be joining the game later seeing how I haven't heard anything about trial accounts at launch.

I pvp to have a meaningful game experience, not to be a predator. "World" pvp in conan is going to be a nightmare. If you like it, more power to you... but I hated the WoW pvp servers when there was no end game content (pve or pvp) and all the higher level players had to do was gank lowbies (in copious amounts).

The percentage of time in WoW that I ran into gankers vs. enemies near my level was minimal. More times than not you'll run into enemies close to your level because they are leveling there just like you. I like the tense atmosphere that this brings. Occasionally you get rolled by high levels and occasionally they grief, but not enough to ever make me move to a "normal" server. After playing PVP servers, PVE seem boring in comparison.

Been playing wow continuously since well before launch and never had this happen once.
Ghost/respawn system makes it pretty easy to avoid being corpse camped.

If you want a 10 minute debuff that basically cripples you, sure.

As someone who from time to time delights in advanced forms of revenge griefing, I can say that knowing where someone is going to spirit rez at and one shotting them with a moonfire is delicious. Rezzing in the city? We'll destroy that too.

It's because of players like you that I avoid most MMO's that have "open" PvP. You're awesome.
Been playing the AoC beta and enjoying the combat system.... game feels a little more interactive than most MMO's when it comes to the combat... makes it a little less boring. It runs decently enough on my 2.5GHz Macbook Pro to warrant me pre-ordering it. It's a little chuggy on medium settings but I will tweak them to find a good blend of pretty visuals vs performance.
Looking forward to the game, for sure.

Some jackass once ganked me in STV while I was on a sliver of health about to knock over an elite, I proceeded to camp him for next 2 hours with a 60. It got weird towards the end, he just kept spamming /cry.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm too angry.

Seems to be a split here, but I will start whever the consensus lands. I normally have gone PvE in the past, but am willing to give PvP a go in AoC.

I didn't quest in STV or Hillsbrad...that's suicide. The constant struggle between Southshore and Tarren Mill was epic though. Eternal War. :D

WoW was my first ever PvP server MMO. It will also be my last.
Don't get me wrong, PvP is fun, but that doesn't mean I want to PvP all the time, and it definitely doesn't mean I want to fight people 10+ levels higher than me while trying to quest.

PvE foir me. PvP is too stressful. I don't want someone else to be able to dictate whether or not I have fun for the night.

I've been playing WoW off and on for 3 years now, all on a PVP server, and I've never had a griefing experience that would deter me from rolling on an inherrently more unpredictable PVP server....until two nights ago. These goddam 70 locks were perched on muchrooms dotting everything in Cenarion Refuge in Zangarmarsh. If I managed to blink out of town to try and quest, one would fly to me and kill me in seconds. A friend and I were at one point unable to rez because we had died too many times and had a timer on our next rez. It was terrible.
Now the correct response would have been for me to get my 70 and a couple more, and gank them back, but I didn't want to travel back here, and this is my friend's first time through, and I didn't want to use her as bait...yet. :)
So, it was a painful experience.
...But I'm still rolling RPVP server in AOC.
Has anyone played today, btw? open launch going well?
