And Valve has managed to completely ruin a fantastic game due to achievement whores.

I played 10 minutes and my team had more medics than offensive classes to heal.
Class limits are going to be almost a necessity or at least a cap on medics, because it's out of hand and the update has been out for maybe an hour.

Totally agree Wackman...I think for the next month we need a medic cap on our server.

edit: they also dropped the Chief of Staff from 10M to 1M medic points.

I haven't got a chance to play with the new update (and won't until the weekend) but when they announced the medic additions would be flying solo I thought the same thing. However on a recent episode of the 1UP Show they discussed this update and that other classes would follow quite quickly. They also mentioned the time it took to release this update was largely due to back-end changes and what not. So we'll see how accurate that is over the next week or so.

Either way if this is happening on a large scale hopefully it goes away sooner rather than later.

TF2 is now unplayable, for at least a week or two. Most teams are running 70% medics. It's really sad.

Hah, it's quite funny to me. Finally the medic is a desirable class to play.

Also, why fret? Just play GTA IV for the next two weeks and worry not about achievement whores; they'll be gone soon enough. ;)

Goldrush looks like it's going to be a fun map, though 24 people seems to be too many, and a 32 person server is going to be one big clusterfuck.

They have a class limit for medics now. Three.

It's the first night of a major update, what do you expect? Anyway, please fix the grammatical errors in the post and maybe add some more information for those who don't know about the new weapons and map

A little bit hasty don't you think? The medic explosion won't last for more than a couple days, if not hours.

Anyways, just play with me! I just came off of a 2 month self-induced videogame hiatus. In those two months a couple buddies got really into TF2 so I've started playing again. I'm still having a ton of fun experimenting with different classes so staying away from medic won't be an issue for me.

edit: A bit more meat on the OP would be nice, more mention of the worldwide free weekend might help too.

Well, today sucks. Can't play GTA4 because I don't have a console, and can't play TF2 because the update broke my game. I guess I'm gonna go play tic-tac-toe against myself.Grumble grumble hiss curse grumble.

Except I really have no interest in GTA IV either. Guess I'll just go back to WoW for a while. :)

It was a huge mess for the first hour or so after the update went up, but people are already settling down a bit (aided by class limitations and such).

Got my first new weapon unlocked, and can't wait to get home tonight and try for the next.

Also, please don't call me an achievement whore, as I'm not (never even bothered to get the full original set of them), I am a medic whore who just wants access to the new content.

I think I've done a decent job so far, however, of playing properly while still trying to get them (except the one time I quit and rejoined, then ubered Lint as a sniper).

The Goldrush map is pretty fun. I was on a great team with like 3 medics and the rest of us were other classes and we had a great game going against the other team.

I typically don't play medic (as there are usually plenty on the server I play on) so, except for Goldrush, this whole update is kinda meh for me. Hopefully it won't take these 5 months for each class.

dose any one know if the achievements are retroactive? it was one of the main talking points before the unpdate

This update makes the game playable again for me. I'm in love with it. The key feature here that nobody is mentioning (maybe because they prefer them) are the isolation of the Custom servers. I absolutely disdain the custom servers, especially ones with shortened respawn times that make defense wayyyyyyyyy too easy and totally turn the game into a frag fest with no objective. It eventually got so hard to find a pure server that I had to shelve the game. Not anymore!

Thank you Valve!

Sorry Niko, TF2 > You

I'm actually more excited about the new map, now we finally have a replacement for 2Fort on our server?

I know the intern specialist and chief of staff ones are. A friend of mine was given intern as soon as he joined the server.

Jesus, I just looked at some of the achievements, and some just have to be straight up planned. Healing someone during a fall to stop them from dying? Yeah, that's naturally occurring.

Medic has been my favorite class since day 1 of TF2, but I've been inclined to play other classes lately, namely for one of the reasons previously mentioned in this thread (the over abundance of medics).

While I agree with you overall, I've done that one several times. It happens when someone gets bounced real high by a (crit) rocket or sticky, and they're going to die when they land, but you heal them on the way up and down and they just survive.

Stuff like getting kills with uber scouts and 5 destructions with demo in one uber though... They're not so standard or easy to come by in normal games.

Karmakin

I've actually done 5 destructions playing as a demo within a 5 second period so that's possible, at the 2nd point of the 2nd stage in Dust Bowl.

In fact, I've done this more than once. Shouldn't be too bad.

I've also caused enough splats that an achievement for preventing it shouldn't be too tough.

Uberkills with scouts 'tho will be difficult.

I love this. The new achievements make people want to try out medics. Sure it's kind of crazy now, but soon people will just generally want to play a medic. The different ubers will encourage more 'fun' ubers rather than a heavy or pyro everytime.

The sad thing is that this is just a slap in the face to those of us who usually played medic anyway before the update.

Did anyone else experience the bug/glitch in Goldrush where you couldn't respawn unless you spectated?

I wouldn't look at it like that. You're getting new stuff for a class you like to play, and you have a pretty large headstart in some of the tougher achievements for the work you already did.

Also, I didn't have that bug, but I will say I fuckin love Goldrush.

Huh? They give you new stuff for your preferred class, opening up new play styles and strategies, and it's a slap in the face? I'm genuinely confused by that reaction.

The new map is a lot of fun and there wasn't too much medic whoring but it's the first time in a while i've not had to switch out in to medic 'cus no ones bothering. The new medic stuff doesn't excite me all that much as its not a class i play a lot, it will be fun to get them over time but what i'm really looking froward to is the stuff for the classes i do play

This map is pretty good.

A couple pointers:

The cart counts as a mobile dispenser. You can reload/heal from it. With that in mind, pyros are worthless against people in range of the cart unless the pyro gets crits. I tried the usual methods of hitting the pile with a pyro but the smart players just stick to the cart and you end up dead.

When playing defense, Spy can get a lot of backstabs from people pushing the cart. Snipers work well too as there are a bunch of long straight areas for sniping.

Demos can put stickies on the tracks and blow them when the cart gets in range. Two demos working together make it very hard to move the cart until they've been killed.

All these Medics means a ridiculous frequency of Ubers.

Bahamut
05-01-2008, 07:53 AM
You know, this update was a bit unnecessary. Medics are pretty good when used well, and didn't really need so much help from a patch. Giving them cheaper weaponry makes them only better, and with the required ridiculous achievements, it encourages mass medic whoring to get them. This patch really screwed up the dynamics of a lot of matches even moreso than beforehand.

Thanks for that Random... good stuff. :D

To all those bitching about the update: I think we can all agree that anything that gets more people to play as a medic willingly (rather than having to beg people to do it in voice chat) is a good thing. Someone already mentioned there are caps in place to prevent too much whoring.

I would imagine they will work up from the least popular class (Medic) to the most popular (Scout) as the updates progress to try and even out the classes popularity-wise.

That's been in for months and is thoroughly broken. People don't know that a custom tab is there, and the result is that 90% of the custom servers stay empty. They need one server list with a checkbox to hide custom servers (that defaults to unchecked) Right now custom server admins are modding their servers to still show up on the other tab, to prevent being "exiled".
