Valve Talks Xbox 360

TeamXbox has posted a quote (http://news.teamxbox.com/xbox/9103/Gabe-Newell-Xbox-360-Makes-My-Life-Worse/) ganked from the pages of Computer Gaming World, where Valve's head honcho, Gabe Newell, takes a shot at the "low end" Xbox 360 for the lack of a hard drive.

"Look, I spoke to some people at Microsoft, and as I said, I can't point to a single feature in Vista that I care about that solves problems for us at all. And I had the same conversation with the Xbox 360 guys. It's like, Xbox 360 doesn't make my life any better, and in fact, it makes it a lot worse, as you're telling me I can't count on having a hard drive."

By the way, just for the record, this quote is a bit misleading because Gabe also criticizes Sony, and even more harshly. He says Sony is making the PS3 very complex so developers will only be able to make games for that console because they have to be tremendously optimized.

Since they released Half-Life back in '99 or so, they've released one other game: Half-Life 2. Everything else that was released was an add-on for Half-Life and towards the end, these add-ons were already made for them because they bought out independent mods.
They've made one good FPS and one highly overrated railshooter disguised as an FPS and they now act as if their opinion actually matters about hardware they don't even really bother with outside of ports.

He can talk about Vista all he wants...but really, why is he even bothering to think about the consoles? They've never developed anything beyond fairly weak ports of their game for 'em, so why start caring now?

Exodus, if you think about it from a real person's perspective and not one of a early-adopter, techno-geek, game-developer or simply a PC-gamer, you'll realize nobody buys extra things for their toys/consumer electronics, so get over it.

As for Half-Life and Valve, they build a game that requires bad-ass machines to be upgraded/thrown away and take forever to do it.

Like it's been said before, listening to these PC developers, with their bloated PC engines, talk about console gaming is like listening to Capcom or Tecmo bitch about PC's.

Hey valve made a ton off of cs for the xbox.. They aren't stupid at valve,, They know that xbox360, ps3 and their follow ups are going to be what people will be using to play games. Sorry but when a $400 system can run better games on hdtv than a $2000 computer well then you can see where this is going..

anyways Gabee knows where the online cash cow is going, and it's going to the hdtv livingroom. He wants in! He knows that Valve can be as big as EA or Blizzard etc if he can get it right. Steam is good. works well. but guess what? It ain't gonna work on xboxlive or on ps3. and that sucks because that is where alot of the customers are going.. He positions his company to be independent and lo and behold the market is moving into a place where he needs to conform to others decisions. I wouldn't be happy if I was him either.

Well I can't find sales figures..but CS is an xbox best seller,$19 platnium price line and it is constantly in the top 10 almost always top 5 of all live games played. I would guess it has sold at least 500,000 copies. and that is not to shabby for a console game.

Yeah I put words in the wrong order... should've been "play games better" not play better games. I mean when you see that quake iv will be running perfect on all 360's and you need a supercomputer to run it on a pc there is a problem there.. When you see a company like epic putting more effort into consoles than pc's then I think that might be a trend. Simply put with these new systems you can deliver your game to everyone!! No one will be at 800x600 with no effects turned on. you won't be ruining atmosphere because someone doesn't have a certain video card, or wasting dev time chasing stuttering problems that they still haven't fixed..

When I can turn on my 360 and be playing online in a good game in literally 1 minute on a big screen with graphics as good or better than my pc with voice and all options on.. well then pc gaming looks like to much $ and work for my time at this point.

Where am I going.. I'm going to 360 land to play games, why because I won't have to buy a new F'n video card everytime valve releases a new level. I won't have to update my video driver and my sound drivers everyweek. I won't have to wait 5 min to start a game. I won't have to worry about people with wall hacks etc... sick of editing all my game ini's to get better performance. I know 360 land won't be perfect, but at least it will be more hassle free..

erm....you see thats where you are WRONG ... most pc games coming out by the end of 2006 will have to be TONED DOWN to run on your precious consoles...and its all a spiral downwards from there, its happened to every generation of console gaming and its inevitable again.

and youre attributing $2000 to pc gaming , why arent you couting the other stuff you can do on it just as well. I know i cant run Adobe premiere 3d studio max on my xbox, also i can just alt tab a game when i get tired and talk to some friends on yahoo messenger for a while .

I wonder if he’s speaking out so often against the new consoles because he’s trying to get Steam established as a gaming platform. If people ignore the Steam releases because of the new consoles it would be bad for Valve. I’m not sure if they charge for people to put their games up there, but if they do Valve might actually be in competition with the 360 and PS3.

AH yeah well most games coming out in the end of 2006 will have to be toned down to run on all but 1% of computers people actually own. Just like they are now. and what about when developers add the physics code for the physics chips? so now you'll have some pc users playing with code physics and some with hardware physics..wait that is just like with the graphics..lol

oh and while I'm playing my 360 I can also (alt-tab=360 button) and talk and use video to communicate with my friends on the live system. But your right I can't use adobe 3d, or for that matter word etc..but guess what I don't want it for that. I have a computer that can do all of that but can't run the latest and greatest in 2006. and don't feel like spending $600plus on just a vid card alone..

I realise that pc's will outdistance consoles but the 360 really does look to hold it's own for online and high res gaming. I love my pcgaming but I also really like dumbing down and having fun,, plus hd and LIVE doesn't hurt either..

I own all three consoles and a PC which can still run games pretty well. I play everything I care to, regardless of platform. I like my PC.

But it seems like, day by day, the PC zealots are getting dumber and dumber. Look at this thread. It's terrible. It's as though the console crowd is getting older, and the PC crowd is getting younger. Which sort of makes sense, since older people have to pay for things themselves, and so would more often gravitate towards the more economical option.

As to this: Gabe is becoming a bit of a whiner. I have no doubt that everything he says is true, but, as someone said above, he'll just have to get over it.

get an equavilent monitor and you have lcd goodness....or better yet....get any monitor that supports 1600x1280 rez and you have plenty saved for a video card

I have a hard time respecting a man who lets himself get so god damn fat. No matter what games he's put out. I'm a programmer, I spend 12 hours a day in front of my PC too but, I manage to get an hour of exercise in each day though. It's 12:10 at night here. I missed my workout window but, I'm getting ready to jump on it now. Sure I'm going to be tired tomorrow but, damnit, I can see my dick in the morning when I get dressed. Wonder when Gabe last saw his?
