I think I've acquired a taste for custom maps after playing on some hella fun examples this afternoon at a friend's house.
I was thinking about making some smaller, objective based maps built for playing against friends, but I have no real idea where to start.
Anyone have any good pointers or example maps that I could have a look at?
Try MLG's Onslaught map. (http://www.bungie.net/stats/Halo3/FileShare.aspx? gamertag=MLG%20Gametypes)
Onslaught is a small, very fast paced 4v4 multi flag map. It should meet the criteria you are looking for. It'll give you a feel for what makes a good small objective map.

My brother swears on The Pit as his favorite level for creating insane objective-based maps.

Um, ok well a few things you should know going into forge. There are certain techniques that you can learn to make your map look very unique and even more professional (once you get the hang of it!).
One thing I wanna mention is interlocking. Its just what it sounds like... objects are fused together to become one solid mass. Two ways to go about this. If you hold the cursor over an object (as spark) you will see it turn green. Push the X button and you will get a series of options. "Place at start" is one option used to interlock objects. Above that is a time 10, 30, 180, etc.
If you choose "No" the object will not spawn at the beginning of the match and will wait whatever time you choose until showing up.
The way people use this to make things blend is simple. In Foundry you place an object. Change the spawn time like I said and then start a new round. That object will not be there. Place another object in the same spot but at a different angle. When the time you set it up the old object will show up and be fused with the new object.
Its takes some practice to make an entire map this way but it opens a whole new way of making things. Just remember to push X and change that old object back to "Yes" so that when you play it will be there!
The other way is called by some "blind forging". If you grab and hold a object in forge (even in mid air works) and then while holding save changes and end the game. When you start it up again the object will be in the air and will not fall! You mix this with then timing trick and you can make some pretty nutty maps.
These techniques only work in Foundry. If you try it with most other maps, the object will shake or move. Sometimes it will go missing even! haha, forge can be a pain in the ass! You can get things to stay up in the air on other maps tho...
Like someone said above go and visit Forge Hub... here is there link to their "Forging 101 (http://www.forgehub.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f= 8)" part of the site. It should answer any questions you have. Also feel free to shoot me a message on live if you want some help and if I can help I will.
Also a great way to learn is to download maps that others have made and in forge erase certain things to see how they did what they did. Its a learning process. :)
