View Full Version : Bionic Commando More than a Port?

From Ars Technica (http://arstechnica.com/journals/thumbs.ars/2008/04/25/multiplayer-information-unveiled-for-bionic-commando-rearmed):
It's becoming apparent that Bionic Commando: Rearmed is going to be much more than a port of the original Nintendo game with some updated graphics. IGN managed to spend some time with the game at Capcom's headquarters and unveiled some details on the game's multiplayer mode, which sounds like it's going to put a new spin on online play.
Game modes like Deathmatch and Last Man Standing are going to make an appearance, but the trademarked Bionic Arm is going to shake things up; it will allow players to grab items from a distance and deflect enemy fire. There will also be a multiplayer mode where weapons don't do any damage; instead, the grappling hook feature of the arm is used to keep players suspended and weapons will merely push them around. The end goal of the mode is to knock other players to the floor.
All of this content means that the game is going to surpass the 150MB size limit on Live Arcade, but Microsoft has listed the game as a special exception to the limit. Bionic Commando: Rearmed is due out in May for Live Arcade, PC, and the Playstation Network.

Alright, so, let's get this out of the way: The limit is bullshit, screw people that bought the system without a hard drive, get rid of the non-hdd sku.
Microsoft really needs to come out with a way to release titles that are larger than the 150MB limit. I understand the need for the limit, but it really sucks when you hear developer after developer complaining about it.
They certainly can shove those overpriced Originals titles out there, and to be fair, I have bought three of those overpriced titles. I'm sure they could give people a new category for games over 150MB, but not really a retail title. How about "360 Originals". Maybe give them a limit of a gig or some such.

The Ars Technica article incorrectly implies that the muliplayer is online; it is local only.
Check the original article:
The one thing missing from multiplayer, both the combat mode and the cooperative story mode, is online play. We demanded an explanation from Judd. The game's multiplayer mode, he explained, was added rather late into development. At around 50% development, some of the game's programmers did a bit of experimentation and tried putting in a second player. The designers found this to be enjoyable, so they built it into the game. The original plan was to add online play to this, but it proved too difficult since the gameplay was not built with online lag in mind. Judd did note that online play would be considered in the event of a sequel.

You know what would be cool? Allow a user without a harddrive to somehow get a physical copy onto CD. Mail it, charge a little more. Let them download an ISO and burn it. Embed some tag in there so that that ISO can only be used on the 360 it was registered on or something. It takes away the advantage of being able to log into your live account from any xbox and play it, but it does give a valid means of obtaining more content to those without hard drives.

Or just stop raping customers with HDD prices...
Bionic Commando Rearmed is FAR MORE interesting than the fully-3D dreadlock fest of the "real game".
I bet money the XBLA game sells more than the retail game. Of course, since the retail is $60 and the XBLA is $10, it should, even if it isn't the better game.

No online play, eh?
That's sad to hear. I just assumed the multiplayer was online. Guess I'll get this for my PS3, then.

Bionic Commando was one of my favorite NES games, I can't wait. I'm especially happy that it will have remote play. (My TV the PS3 is hooked up to is often in use.)

Game of the fucking year!
Co-op?
Oh, and sounds like this'll be on Steam too!
According to the official site, the XBLA version of Rearmed will retail for 800 MSP, while the PSN version will sell for $10 USD. The price-point of the PC version has not yet been determined, as it may include additional content not available in the other versions. No matter the price, the PC version will be sold over several digital distribution outlets, and will require either Windows XP or Vista, and at least 512 MB RAM, and 650 MB hard drive space.
Intel Pentium 4 2 Ghz/AMD XP 2200+
512 MB RAM
650 MB free hard drive space
128 MB DirectX® 9c compatible card/ nVIDIA® GeForce 6600 GT/or ATI equivalent
DirectX® 9 compatible sound card

What is the point of having a limit if every other game is allowed to break the limit?

Because then we wouldn't have anything to argue about :D
EDIT
This is so going to be the best $10 I spend this year. Yes, better than even N+ The only thing that might be close is Empire: Alpha Complex. I do wish the multiplayer was online.
Anybody notice the unlockable in the above trailer - here comes Barbie.

I knew when they announced this that I would be buying it no matter what. Easily my favorite NES game. That video just made me hungry for the real deal.
