Not letting Motley Crue have all the fun, Activision sends along word that rock legends Def Leppard will be releasing a new Def Leppard track pack including a sneak preview of Leppard's new single.

Rock heavyweights Def Leppard have partnered with Activision Inc.’s Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock on an epic three-song track pack that will give fans an exclusive opportunity to sample the band’s #1 new radio single, “Nine Lives,” five days before their upcoming studio album Songs from the Sparkle Lounge releases on April, 29, 2008. The single is the result of Def Leppard’s groundbreaking collaboration with country music legend Tim McGraw, and will be featured on their highly anticipated upcoming record Songs from the Sparkle Lounge, the band’s first new studio release since 2006’s YEAH , which begins yet another remarkable new chapter in the band’s 30-year recording career.

The track pack also features live versions of “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages,” two of Def Leppard’s most beloved chart-toppers from their multi-platinum Pyromania album.

“Being involved with Guitar Hero is very exciting for us and adds a whole new layer of appreciation," says Joe Elliott, lead singer, Def Leppard. "I know from personal experience how much more you get into the music by playing the game - which is why we were keen to explore this opportunity. Guitar Hero is extremely popular with all kinds of music heads, which includes a lot of our fans- and we think releasing ‘Nine Lives’ this way first is just fantastic!"

“We are extremely thrilled to be partnering with Def Leppard, who are true rock icons,” said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane. “The band’s participation in offering ‘Nine Lives’ to fans exclusively via Guitar Hero III downloadable content before their album hits store shelves, before the single is available for purchase on iTunes, demonstrates the level of commitment these legendary artists are making to Guitar Hero and how the franchise is transforming the music landscape.”

The track pack will be available for Xbox LIVE Marketplace for Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and in the PLAYSTATION Store for the PLAYSTATION 3 computer entertainment system on April 24, 2008.

Y'know what I would LOVE? Five days before Activision releases GH: Aerosmith Harmonix makes an announcement that they will release a Aerosmith Pack for 15.99.

As for this announcement, I'm not a big fan of Def Leppard or Guitar Hero 3, so Activ will NEVER see my money.

I'm sure Aerosmyth has signed a contract ensuring that won't happen.

yeah i doubt we'll see any aerosmith on rock band, though that would be bad ass. can we not just sweep guitar hero 3 under the rug, and just release everything on rock band from now on. i mean who wants to play just the guitar when you can play guitar, drums, and vocals? Guitar Hero, while it was fun at first, is old news.

Are Def Leppard really legends? That seems a bit much. Maybe you could replace "legends" with "wash ups?"

More of a legend than you'll ever be, sir.

Youth is certainly wasted on the young, eh?

If they were truly legends we would've seen a Guitar Hero: Def Leppard ;)

Looking forward to this. I could care less about their new single, everything they've done since Adrenalize has sucked. Personally, if I could pick a couple to be put into GH or RB, it would be Bringing on the Heartache leading directly (as it's supposed to) into Switch 625 (cool 5min guitar solo track) and Hysteria (the song, not the whole album).

What really surprises me is that there's new DLC coming for GH in the first place. I figured all the legal wrangling with Gibson would have shut the whole thing down.

This was announced several days ago, actually, with Def Leppard and Activision boasting that it'd be the first single to debut in a video game or whatever. Then the Motley Crue song for Rock Band came out of nowhere and surely humiliated a few Neversoft folks.

Sorry, but that's not saying much. My mailman is more of a legend than I'll ever be.

I'm just saying that it takes more than record sales to make a band "legendary," regardless of whether or not you like said band.

Just for the record, this was actually revealed by Def Leppard's record company weeks ago. This is just the official Activision announcement.

Oh shit, I've become that guy.

No, I also knew about this weeks ago, as Def Leppard was on Rock Line (I guess it's syndicated, but it's all recorded at a local radio station) and they talked about the process of getting the original audio tracks split apart into the separate elements for Rock Band, and how the guitar tracks were mixed for GH3. While they were talking, they also mentioned another band (I think it was Styx, but I can't remember too well) was doing the same thing.

Yes, the Rock Line appearance was where the rumors originated, and then they were confirmed via press release from DL's record company a week or two later. Activision was late to get out their PR for some reason.
