Just saw this on the EQ2Players home page.

EQ2 free for 7 days (http://everquest2.station.sony.com/en/promotions/winback/)

This offer is only available to players with accounts which have been inactive since July 8th.

We invite you to see the improvements your comments have prompted with a special free 7-day trial subscription that begins from when you log back in.

You know, I want to be the guy who stopped playing Everquest 2, reads about this offer and then takes a long, hard look at his life. He looks at everything he's done since he quit, looks at his career, his girlfriend, then just says, "Nah, fuck it all," and logs back on.

Did anyone else notice that the address ends with "/winback/"?

Har har.

P.S. - You can sign up for the free 7-day trial via the same link, and you don't need a credit card in order to participate.

When it comes down to it, I've found EQ2's graphics and overall design to be incredibly drab and ugly, yet with all the downsides of high polygon counts and huge textures. The world feels empty and sterile, the monsters and backdrops uninspired.

If the mechanics and gameplay were absolutely perfect, I might play, but they're far from that. WoW is so much more fun to _look at_, not to mention play, that it's no surprise EQ2 hasn't been able to hold on to market share.

Free trial? No thanks.

I'm with Librum - the whole game felt... dead.

The graphics had some impressive bits - I had a tower shield with spikes all around, and each individual spike cast its own distinct shadow. But the characters were bland, the animations clunky (my warrior looked like she was a fat tired guy jogging around) and the quests were repetitive, even by MMO standards.

And tutorials? Forget it. One of the most newbie-unfriendly game I've ever played. I saw multiple people level 20+ asking how to craft. I had no idea how to craft, either. The game never really mentioned how or where to do it.

I got a "Kill 8 Antelopes" quest right after completing the "Kill 7 Antelopes" quest. Not harder, not higher level. Exact same mobs, exact same location. After the umpteenth time of getting that same quest, and not being powerful enough to go anywhere else to get other quests, I logged out and cancelled my account.

The one awesome thing about EQ2: you could ask an NPC guard where any other NPC in the zone was located, and they'd show you right where to go.

LoL if your not a hard core player it might take you 7 days to get to your master class(lv 20 I think it was) and just enough time to get your master class try it for a day or two and then figure out you should have picked a different one.

Is their still no pvp in this game? When I tried it when it frist came out I knew it was a PVE type game ,but I thought there would be atleast one pvp server.

They did a lot of similar offers with EQ except back then they'd actually offer a month or more. This is pretty lame.

How bad is EQ2 doing in terms of people playing it? I notices it was only 20 bucks.
Wow must be kicking its ass. I didn't even like wow that much, but I was thinking of going back just because of a buddy of mine and a guy from work both want me to join their guilds.

Come back to EverQuest II? Has the game been out long enough for a "come back" campaign yet?

EQ2 was too much like work. That is how it felt to play the game. But Evil has a point - only after 9 months and they are begging people to come back - that should tell you something.

I'm waiting for a mmog with a world where celebreties, pro sport players, actors, etc earn minimum wage and teachers, cops, firefighters, etc make millions. It's a world where the marginally talented "stars" (Madonna, B. Spears, etc) simply do not exist. Where world leaders do not endorse holy wars (or wars of any kind for that matter.) but work toward peaceful resolution of problems. Where CEO's willingly earn only slightly more than the lowest paid worker in their company. Where the success of any form of art or entertainment is gauged by it's overall contribution to the public at large - not by how many mouth-breathers tune in every week.

There's a world far more fantastic and fanciful than any game could create.

I read this and actually thought about reinstalling the 9 CDs this stupid game came with. Then I remembered how shitty it ran on my GF6800, 1.5GB RAM, XP2800 machine compared to CoH, WoW, DAOC... No freaking way I'm gonna suffer throught the ugliness again.

Anyone who reads into the whole "They're already begging for people to come back!" thing needs a reality check. All MMO's do this... why? Because it's a good idea, especially if you believe in your product! People like to try things before they buy, and if the game is good, chances are they'll get addicted and stick with it.

That said.. EQ is teh suck.

A come-back campaign? When? I was unsubscribed from September until a couple months ago and I never saw that. They've run campaigns giving away free time to *new* subscribers, but I haven't seen a single come-back e-mail or ad for CoH.

Very true, all mmo's do this. But EQ2 in particular might be doing it cause over half the population that bought the game are no longer playing it. And there playerbase has only decreased for months.

EQ2 = Death warmed over. They need to accept the fact that EQ is dying and that WoW is taking their lovers away. ;)

I must be special because I got an offer for 21 days.... ...I am logging back in too. I am soooo ooo oo very tired of WoW. I have tried my best to get back into it. Even joined one of the PA guilds for massive pvp and I just can't. If I have half the interest in EQ/EQ2 I will resubscribe to the Station Pass. At least thay way I can play some of the other games too.

Interesting site, although that graph doesn't support your SOE hatin'. The part in the FAQ where the author explains that sources for data include, among others, "anonymous sources" and "educated guesses" is pretty meh.

The marketshare graph is interesting though.

Actually John Smedly basically did that when he congratulated the WoW team in creating an excellent MMOPG. People basically read that as Smed saying Blizzard won we lost. Basically they tried to make EQ II too different than EQ, and they threw out the soul of what made Norrath , Norrath.

I wish my dealer did "come back" campaigns!

Interesting. My account was cancelled about a week ago (although my last login was about two weeks ago) and I never heard anyone mention it.

I might have enjoyed it a lot more if I had some friends who played it and had someone able to explain the more confusing points of the game. As it stands, I doubt I'll ever go back to it.

Now in know that this is a good idea to promote the game however i have yet to see WoW do this.... Maybe with the mergers of some of the eq servers this will change.

WTF is Runescape? I don't think I've ever heard of it, but maybe i just forgot it from all the others out there now. But I was looking at their growth chart and its very odd. They grow very slowly and then in '04 BAM they take off like a rocket. Very odd...

Also, The chart doesn't have Jumpgate. Good game, its too bad it never took off. Its still running though with a small, but core group of fans.

Runescape is this small free online MMO. I played it a couple times but never really enjoyed it. Pretty simplistic, it seems. For some reason I always see young teens in libraries playing it. Not sure why it attacts that crowd so well.
