Brandon Laurino of Konami announced today, via the Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/04/10/metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots-%E2%80%93-product-details-revealed/), a variety of things tied to the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots release on June 12th.
The major items that I note from the information is that:
1. The MGS4 LE will only be available from Gamestop/EB and has a cool cover by Yoji Shinkawa below.
2. A MGS4/PS3 80GB bundle (black PS3) will be available on June 12th and include the game and a DualShock 3 Controller.
3. The Limited Edition Gunmetal PS3 will also be available on June 12th. No word on whether the game and DualShock 3 Controller is included, but I am guessing they will be. Laurino says this is the "VERY, VERY Limited Edition". NOTE: If it is like the Japanese version it will be a 40GB PS3, we'll have to see what they announce for the release over here.
Below are the pictures of the LE version of the game and the non-Gunmetal PS3 Bundle (they are holding onto the box shot of the Gunmetal one for the moment). Also, no pricing was announced for either bundle.
*Note: Larger versions of each picture are at the Playstation Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/04/10/metal-gear-solid-4-guns-of-the-patriots-%E2%80%93-product-details-revealed/) original news item.

Obviously, Sony and Konami are taking this game quite seriously with multiple versions of the game as well as 2 bundles (both probably including the game) coming out on the same date as the game. PS3 will probably look very nice to anyone that doesn't own one as of yet with this.

These bundles are for all those people that have been saying they won't buy a PS3 till MGS4 drops....I'd bet money you'll see a US FFXIII bundle as well.

So this is an 80GB version *with* the software BC?Correct.
If you go and preorder the game, you can get a bonus MGS Saga Vol. 2 DVD (sort of a 'history of metal gear' movie) with an access code to get you into the online beta on April 17th!
The online looks absolutely amazing, especially with the vast character customization that is going to be possible. Can't fucking wait.

Although he didn't announce that as being so, I am going to guess it will since I believe Konami is interested in the Metal Gear Solid: Essential Collection release for PS2 working with the PS3 via backwards compatibility.
You'll have to wait for the product to show up places to see if the BC is true or not.

No prices as of yet, we'll have to wait for the retailers to pop up the Black PS3 bundle and that should give a good indication of the Limited Gunmetal amount...although they need to announce how big the HD is on that one.

This I have an interest in. Returning backwards compatability and a rumble controller. MGS4 doesn't really wow me, but it doesn't hurt.

Last time I checked the price was announced a while back at 500 bucks.

Is pretty obvious that they are taking this game quite serious I mean Konami is delivering the game exclusively to only one console and we know that game could sell more if they were to release it on the 360 as well. So they are just giving different choices to consumers so both companies can benefit greatly from this franchise exclusivity.

Well, the Gunmetal PS3 is going to be extremely limited (it's already sold out in Japan, was in a matter of hours). I am guessing Sony wanted to give people another option (the black bundle version) that should be more available.

I wonder if Sony is putting too many eggs in one basket by relying so heavily on MGS4 as a system mover. While I'm sure the game will put up very good numbers, it's worth noting that the previous two releases each realized increasingly diminishing sales and MGS3 only sold about 3.5 million worldwide despite an install base of over 100 million PS2's.
Will MGS4 hit over 3.5 million with a fraction of the install base on PS3? I wouldn't be surprised if it can get to around 2 or 2.5 million worldwide by years end, but that's not in the same category of major releases like Mario Galaxy, Smash Brothers, Halo and Gears. Should this really by hyped as a system seller and will this end up as a double-edged sword if Sony's most hyped exclusive, to date, only sells a third as many copies as Gears 2 will likely sell in the first month alone (Gears1 sold 4.5 million with a smaller 360 install base, so I wouldn't be surprised to see near Halo 3 type numbers for the sequel)?

As far as the Vancouver, BC area is concerned, every EB Games outlet I have spoken with do not have the the promo disc available. Other than an email mentioning this bonus material no information is available. At this point it looks like access to the MGS Online beta might be a wash up here.
Can any other Canadians confirm or deny this in their area/store? As someone who has the LE on order I'd like to know if I'm getting that disc, otherwise I'll just head south and do my business there; like I seem to be doing more and more.

All those people who picked up MGS3 back then by now probably own PS3 with promise of MGS4 exclusive so it seems like a winner. MGS series was always for slightly hardcore obsessive gamer types that would generate six zeros figures for Sony and Konami.

Bear in mind the the 100 million PS2 group was a huge demographic, where as the 360 at the time of Gears was the mainly the demographic of the 360.
I loved the FF9 comparison. MGS2 left a bad taste in people's mouths, and when 3 came out it was very different from 2 and still didn't let you play as Snake.

Um, not at all. Final Fantasy 9 was a great game (one of the best in the series), though it caught a lot of flak from people who were introduced to JRPGs by FF7 and FF8 (the worst of the whole series by a long shot). MGS3 lacked fun gameplay, and turned people off because it was aimed at the hardcore tactical espionage crowd. Many people I know just didn't have the patience to sit through all the sneaking, even though they totally dug the story. I couldn't make it through myself at all.
Also, FFX was horrible and only a comeback because of its pretty graphics, great soundtrack, and killer cutscenes. It was all fluff though.

PURE OPINION:
In all honesty, I share a similar opinion to his. The only difference is that I thought the only redeeming qualities of FFX were the battle system, the Sphere Grid, and Blitzball. Ignoring those features, the game was completely uninteresting to me - which is why I'm never going to finish it.
Now, FFIX...that game was awesome through and through!

Now, FFIX...that game was awesome through and through!
Hell yeah! Although I'm against you on your opinion of FFX we are totally in agreement about FFVIII and FFIX. I hated VIII and think it was the worst of the "new generation" of FF games (FF 7-12). I think many people didn't like FFIX because anyone who hadn't been exposed to FF before VII had no idea how much of a throwback FFIX was in regards to characters and overall storyline. It was like a love letter to the FF fans of old as the series finished its 3 game run on the Playstation.
Anyway, how'd we get onto FF in a MGS thread again?

I'd just like to remind everyone to check out the Kojima Productions Report (http://www.konami.jp/kojima_pro/radio/the_report/the_report_086.mp3), especially if you are looking forward to MGO. There's quite a bit of discussion about maps, gametypes, abilities, the length of the MGO Beta...and a bunch of other stuff.

I'm one of those people that Loved MGS1, liked MGS2 and just couldn't get into MGS3 Snake Eater. But then I got Portable Ops for the psp and fell back in love with the series. So now I'm looking to get MGS3 Subsistence since apparently that fixed the biggest problem I had with Snake Eater (the camera) its closer to the Portable Ops camera in that its 3rd party over the shoulder so its alot easier to see.around the world and avoid getting spotted.
After beating Portable Ops I'm eagerly awaiting MGS 4.

I just pre-ordered mine. I wish I could get the extra disk sooner than "when it ships". I really thought about the LE edition...although in another thread I said it wasn't worth it for me...the soundtrack almost sold me...just couldn't bring myself to spending almost $100 for it ($10 ship plus tax). Although GS/EB says now you can pre-order online and pick up in store (that feature will be available soon). I might change my mind :)

I pre-ordered MGS4 but realized I might be lost with the story. I played most of MGS2 and I watched the Sage vol 2.0 DVD that came with the preorder for 4 but it only covers the high level stuff like who's Big Boss, Liquid Snake, Solid Snake, and Solidus Snake. I know there's some weird stuff going on with Ocelot. Is there a good website or FAQ to get caught up on the series?

I just don't see this being the EPIC PLAYSTATION 3 SAVIOR some people assume it'll be. The series is good, damn good, but it lacks the platform ubiquity that Mario or Master Chief have. By that I mean it seems (not necessarily is) guaranteed that your Wii owner is a Mario man, or your 360 pal loves or at least appreciates Halo. MGS is more of a niche title... in relation anyway.
I think that most people who want MGS4 probably already have the system, but that there will of course be some people who will pick up a PS3 only after Metal Gear's hit. Not a massive group by any means, but a big enough group that Sony will probably gleefully spin the news in their favor and not say outright, "Well this is a temporary spike, nothing to see here."
MGS4 will be notable, and it will sell quite remarkably I'm sure. However, it'll take a combination of releases - more than just MGS4 or FFXIII, mind you - for Sony to launch its systems sold into the same league as the 360 and Wii.
Or they could be modest and accept what's becoming a respectable third place and not an embarrassing defeat.

I think the gunmetal looks great (I like it better than the shiny black w/ silver) but since I already own a ps3, I just went ahead and pre-ordered the LE of the game. I do wish I could utter some dark incantation and my black monolith would metamorphose, lepidoptera-like, into the a MGS special edition console with all the capabilities of my fully-operational battle-console (like hardware BC), but I guess that's not likely to happen.
