GameInsider has managed to get their hands (http://www.gameinsider.com/comments.php?id=980&catid=1) on a leaked script for an upcoming commercial for Mario Kart DS. Reading the script leaves one with the impression that Nintendo is serious about beating Sony with global online gaming for handhelds.

The script focuses on touting Nintendo's upcoming WiFi Connection network which boasts the ability to let DS gamers globally play online, as well as gameplay footage of Mario Kart DS.

Our source has indicated to us that shooting for this commercial will be starting within the month -- after which, the ad would roll out on TV in another month's time. If this timeline is correct, one could assume that Mario Kart DS would be dated for a late October or early November release date.

The full script is available with the article.

When I saw The Skeleton Key, there was a theater commercial for Nintendo WiFi Connection emphasizing global online play. "Play anyone, anywhere." It didn't really focus on any game, until the end, when it showed a DS running Mario Kart.

And now that I read the script... it's a lot like that. The ad, I should point out, excited me a lot more than The Skeleton Key.

I just got done playing a session of Advanced Wars: DS. Later in September I'll be getting Lunar and of course when Mario Cart comes out I'll have that as well.

I honestly do not see the PSP matching the DS sales this year, maybe next year but definately not this year.

I wonder if the rumors are true about a DS SP.

#1: I have heard no such rumors, not even on the rabid IGN boards where any turn of phrase that can possibly be turned into a rumor gets repeated ad nauseum.

#2: How would that even work? Where would the D-pad and the face buttons go?

The profits from the pokemon games help fund development of stuff like Wi-Fi Mario Kart. :-)

We're just niche parasites on the back of the mass market.

Mario Kart Wi-Fi in the office, it is going to rock if the netcode is solid.

While it's true that Pokemon is super-mainstream and helps fund other stuff, I think it'd still be a stretch saying Mario Kart is niche. :p

Mario Kart DS looks awesome, i recently downloaded a clip. Very nostalgic, the stage was one from the N64 version and i think i saw a bob-omb being used as an item.

Since Nintendo has demonstrated DS games can make use of the GBA slot in a variety of ways, I wonder if they could release a GBA cartridge allowing the ad-hoc games to go online? A patch, basically.

What are you talking about? I'm confused!

What have they done that shows this? I haven't seen anything. Not to say you're wrong or anything, I'm just curious. :p

*edit* because I didn't want to double-post, Could they use the DS cart or GBA cart to house an internet browser? I mean, browsing the net would be super easy with a touch screen...*edit*

In theory you can use the DS to browse the web. It would be like 75 kinds of difficult however. The DS does not apply some of the needed initial information on outgoing packets. Nintendo decided it would conform to its own little standard. I am waiting to see how they do the Wi-Fi thing.

And re: using the GBA/DS slots at the same time look up Band Brothers(Someone correct me on the title if I got it wrong). They are releasing an expansion for it in Japan & it uses the GBA slot. Game hasn't come here yet, looks cool.

Band Brothers and Metroid Pinball have GBA slot expansions. Feel The Magic, WarioWare: Touched and, I believe, some other games have used the GBA slot. I'm not sure if the GBA Polarium game will work together with the DS game.

A browser would certainly be possible. I doubt Nintendo will release such a thing any time soon though.

I can't believe I didn't know about using the GBA slot for an expansion bay!
