Looks like Resident Evil is going to visit the DS with full touch screen support. Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=60653) has more info and some screenshots.
Dubbed Biohazard: Deadly Silence (DS! Brilliant!), the game represents the 10th anniversary of Resident Evil and appears to be a remake of the first game, albeit in what seems full 3D (rather than the pre-rendered backdrops of the PlayStation original), and the ability to enter a first-person mode for fights, from what we've seen in the screens.

Looks...ok. I'm somewhat disappointed in the DS's 3D performance, or perhaps it's a matter of games not being optimized enough.

the first person thing sounds an awful lot like what Konami did with MG. I definately will be getting RE DS

Deadly Silence?
That's so gay this should be called Guy-O Hazard.

It's too bad they went back to the original graphics for it. It looks like crap compared to the GC remake. It looks 10 years old again.

Will this be the first M-rated game for a handheld? And if so, what will be the repercussions should someone inadvertently look over the shoulder of a gamer that is right in the middle of capping a zombie? I mean, secondhand smoke has been proven to be carcinogenic – does that mean that ‘passive secondhand gaming’ can be held responsible for someone shooting a homeless person because they thought he or she was a zombie (based on what they saw on the gamer’s DS)?
Or have I eaten too many Ritz Bits??

There have been other M-rated portable games. 14 of them.

Will this be the first M-rated game for a handheld?Nope. There have been a handful of M rated GBA games. According to Nintendo, GTA, Wolfenstein, Serious Sam, and Mortal Kombat are a few of those with M rating.
Or have I eaten too many Ritz Bits??Yes. ;) Don't get your undies in a bunch, now.

Okay, clarification time - my question on whether RE DS was the first M-rated game was rhetorical. :)

its built on the same game that I now own for Saturn, Playstation, PC and GameCube, both in normal version and Director's Cut, and they want me to buy a DS version as well? sure, I'm sold already :D

Well, Looks like I will finally be playing through the First Resident Evil. Never tried it before but I hear it is great and being able to take it places with me, I'm pretty much already sold on this.

It would be impossible to run the GC remake of RE on the DS.

The backgrounds look pre-rendered to me. Although, how would they have an over the shoulder view with a prerendered background...

While it looks on par with the PS1 visually, this doesn't bother me the least. It does look quite cool, and the idea of this being in the palm of my hands makes it all the better.

Maybe its not pre-rendered like the PS1's version but it sure as hell looks AS BAD or WORSE than the PS1's version.

I have a feeling these are fairly early screens. I am extending a bit of good faith that they will clean up the graphics. And add the Twinkie-O-Doom :)

yup, it's not prerendered.
Usually I get the impression that the DS's 3d performance is as good as the ps1.
Does anyone know how many Mbytes can the developers fit in a DS cartridge?

I know they can fit a 90 minute movie using MPEG-4.

That's like being not a dumb as a rock. Anyway, I think it's about 256 MBs?

Resident Evil for PlayStation: $50.
Resident Evil for GameCube: $50.
Resident Evil for DS: $30.
Watching someone buy the same game three times: priceless.

Nintendo claimed "one gigabit" during the run-up to the DS launch, which works out to 128MB. But I doubt that figure is set in stone.

being the knit-picker that i am, i feel compelled to point out that DS games are on flash memory, not traditional "carts". this makes the media cheaper, and re-writable (at least in the development stage), but removes some flexability in terms of what can be done. if the DS cannot page more than 128MB (1gigabit) then that's the maximum size you can have. if it was a true "cart" you could include some on cart logit that would dynamicaly switch between storage pages giving you virtualy unlimated space (as long as you could afford the cost). the neo-geo used a system like this to break their storage wall (330megabit IIRC).
i guess in theory nintendo could release an upgrade cart that plugged into the GBA slot that had the paging logic on it, and if they wanted something in the line of a superFX type upgrade, but i doubt anything like that would see the light of day.
for the record, i have no idea what the paging limit is on the DS, and i'm pretty doubtful it's set as low as 128MB. i think nintendo's "1 gigabit" statement was in the context of price... where they could produce a 1 gigabit DS flash card for the price of a X megabit GBA cart.
