View Full Version : MUSE Concert DVD - AMAZING

I know I've never posted something about a CD or DVD on the front page before - but nothing was quite like the experience I had last night with Muse (http://www.muse.mu)'s latest CD release called HAARP. The CD/DVD combo is actually of a live performance from Wembley stadium in London. If you know about Wembley you know it's huge - and Muse literally packs the place.
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/31N0CcJE-tL._SL500_AA240_.jpg
Let me just say this - I couldn't even sit in my sit during the entire thing. I felt like I was at the concert. The DVD was a moving experience, and I can't even begin to imagine what it was like to be there with 75,000 fans moving, screaming and clapping in unison.
So do yourself a favor - pick up the two disc set (http://www.amazon.com/gp/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FHaarp-CD-DVD-Set-Muse%2Fdp%2FB000XTLUW0%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dmusic%26q id%3D1207399520%26sr%3D8-1&tag=bapenguin-20&linkCode=ur2&camp=1789&creative=9325), it's only $11.99 right now at Amazon. Crank up the receiver, turn down the lights, and watch one of the greatest concerts you will ever witness.

Excellent.
I've loved Muse for a long time. ShowBiz and Origin of Symmetry are my two favorite albums by them.
I will definitely check this out.
I'm going to see if BestBuy has it in stock so I don't have to wait for delivery. lol!
Thanks for the suggestion.

I'm going to check it out.
Now, here's a thought... imagine if HAARP was showing in IMAX theaters with 3D projection. :)
U2 3D was unbelievable for the exact reasons described in the OP. We're in a bit of a renaissance.

Edit:Apparently there's no official Canadian release. Yay for the music industry!

Being the obnoxious musical snob I am, this attracted me like a moth to a flame.
I wanted to tear this to shreds, but musically they are a step above most of the crap these days. That said, vocally they're as flaccid as a glam rock star's cock while around people their own age. And dear god they look like pillocks on stage.

Here's the thing. The arrangements and technicals of what they do, quite frankly is shit-nuts crazy. To call it over-the-top is an understatement. That they can do it live is unbelievably insane.

I just watched this a couple nights ago, to say it's amazing is an understatement.
I had the chance to go see them on their Absolution tour. They played at a nightclub with less than 1500 people, and I don't think they'll ever play at a place that small again. Out of all the concerts I've been to (and we're talking over a hundred) that was the best of them.

Yeah, Muse have built themselves up to be the best live band this decade, it's awesome to see. I caught them live last year and nearly ended up in a brawl over the fact I wanted to stand and the people behind me were getting bitchy. It was an incredible concert though, I had no idea of how people could be sitting down in that.

I am a Muse FANATIC. I was at the Absolution Tour show in Atlanta where Matt demolished his lip during Citizen Erased. It was in a tiny tiny club, with about half of the club being friends of mine. We only got 4 songs before he was rushed in an ambulance to the hospital, but it was still incredible.
I haven't seen this DVD yet. Thanks for posting.

Uhg. I know it's just your opinion, but I wish people could appreciate talent when they see it even if they don't care for the music.
You're comparing a guy with a huge vocal range, who never misses a note to no talent singers who can't hit the right note, never mind stay in the right key, and generally just scream at the same pitch throughout every song?

Missed my chance to head to the concert in the DVD last year because of some exams, this has re-opened the wound.
I sort of never bothered with Muse when they were starting out, but after I saw them at Lowlands in 2006 I was completely converted; ran out to buy their albums and got myself tickets to another one of their concerts in Ireland a couple of months later. They're absolutely fantastic live, and I'll be picking up this DVD as soon as is humanly possible.

Top notch talent? Well Led Zeppelin.
When your example of "top notch talent" is a band that broke up almost thirty years ago, perhaps your judgment of a current band is colored by your just not liking modern music.
Edited to add: Please note, I also like Led Zeppelin, but I also like some bands where the reunion concert isn't going to have a former band member's child playing with them.

I picked this up at Best Buy today, as I forgot to pick it up during the week. As such, it was the last copy. No other new release was even close to selling out. That is saying something.
And Sandman, that 75,000, more likely than not, is SOLD tickets. There are still giveaways, record company seats and various other "specialty" seats that usually aren't factored in for concert sales.

i find it funny that a lot of the so called muse fans have only recently discovered the band, they have been around for a long time now, and were known in the indie scene for ages.
Personaly, i think the band is amazing, the lead singer has a very strong presence and their entire body of work is as varied as it comes, so to judge them only on their recent hits is a ignorant at best.

Muse is amazing when it comes to live performances, but I can't believe how over hyped their music is. It's good, but pretty far from great I would say. Personally for me this has to do with the lead singer and the fact that their musical style is not eclectic enough. Their latest album pretty much blew, and I think they really need to take a new direction before their style becomes completely stale. And this new direction needs to have the lead singer not singing the exact same way he has for 5 albums. Seriously, it's pathetically easy to recognize a Muse song, and not in a good way.
The only band that I would say is even more overrated is Radiohead, who coincidentally have some similarities to this band. If Muse didn't put on such stellar live performances, I probably wouldn't listen to them much to be honest.

Well as they explain on the DVD I linked, they hate all that media stuff.
They much prefer to keep to themselves, they don't like photo shoots or interviews or TV appearances or any of that stuff, so I don't know how they were convinced to appear on that in the first place. They're obviously out of their element so I wonder why they were doing something they never normally do.

Not necessarily but it does make the people who followed the band when no one knew about them feel superior.
Muse are a great live band, but as for the best? I'm sure there's dozens of bands that can put on a great stadium show filled with big lights and catchy guitar licks. Personally i love my Radiohead ( perhaps a bit obsessively (http://www.last.fm/user/morningbright/)), but music is way too subjective. You can argue about the technicalities for days on end, however, music has such a big emotional element to it that trying to convince someone that the band they like is shit is like trying to convince someone that they shouldn't like the flavor of Apples.
Bap, have you by chance checked out Daft Punk's Alive 2007?

Top notch talent? Well Led Zeppelin.
I own almost every Led Zeppelin concert DVD known to man. So you can call me a fan. But I would still disagree with you.
For most every performance John was drunk, and Jimmy was completely fucked up on heroin. His guitar performances were worse than terrible. They were shit. Plant's lyrics were also all over the place. I would compare their performances to The Mars Volta shows. All energy, and a few good slow songs here and there. Their later shows seemed to get even worse suprisingly. They did have some good live performances out there, but nothing like the powerhouse that MUSE released. One song from beginning, intermission, to end, everything perfect. Notes, scales, time signatures, stops, everything. dead. on. perfect.
The MUSE live are amazing. Those guys are dead on for every song. Their technicallity is some of the best I've ever seen. They make X Japan's 'Last Live' look like childs play. They make Pink Floyd's 'P.U.L.S.E' look like a slow moving giant. They make me hope every other band out there right now is completely re-evaluating their live performance. Because next to MUSE, they have some work to do.

I have to agree 100% on this. In the studio and live are two different beasts. Muse pulls off their in-studio musical masterpiece to the t at a live show. I was amazed that they could do what they did live. You really need to see it to believe it.

There are plenty of bands who are famous for their live experience, such as Iron Maiden, and Blind Guardian - those two bands have the three best live CDs out there (the quality of them are way beyond any other live CD out there, and have excellent songs to boot), and two excellent live DVDs. Manowar also boasts of some of the highest quality live DVDs out there as well. The Dream Theater live DVD Score XX is also excellent. Although I like Muse, they aren't in the same class as these bands in terms of songwriting or live performances - when the music isn't as technical, it isn't nearly as impressive naturally.

If Coldplay is Radiohead-lite, then Muse is Radiohead-heavy, which is why I like them.
That sounds about right..actually it's pretty close to the comment my wife made.
Muse---Radiohead with balls.

If your saying MUSE isn't technical, well then I guess I don't know what to say.

I really want to like Muse. However, every time I listen to them I feel the need to strangle the lead singer because he can't stop breathing into the microphone. It's so goddamn annoying.
Even Tay Zonday knew to move away from the microphone for crying out loud.

Compared to some of those bands I've listed, not even close.

But the bands you are referring to are technical to be technical.
Dream theater is a technical prog band, or technical metal if you want to say that. That's what they do.
But when you take a band like MUSE who releases alternative or pop records, and hasnt been around for even half as long as Dream Theater, you gotta give them credit for what they do live. And for how far they've come in such a short amount of time.

Slightly out of context, but I've heard this opinion so many times that I had to quote it.
I'm not going to respond to the quote, I'm just going to leave it for everybody to look at...
Another one,
Muse---Radiohead with balls
I'll just leave that one out there as well. Ponder it.

Not true - the only band I listed that are technical to (partially) be technical is Dream Theater, and that's not completely true either. The other aforementioned bands make use of it to further song concepts.

Personally i'd say Muse are Radiohead-pop, while Coldplay are a sappy, less political version of U2.
I don't like to make comparisons between bands like Radiohead and Muse, because even though you can sit and do it all day, where does it leave you? They're both excellent, technically, musically, and performance wise, so I don't really know why people feel the need to endlessly compare one or the other.
And anyone who doesn't think Muse isn't technically phenomenal hasn't listened to very much Muse.

What you're saying here is that Muse doesn't do that, and you're wrong.

I'm saying that they don't take it to the extent that some other bands do. Don't warp my words - it makes it painfully obvious that you know little about the aforementioned bands, and many others out there.

While it was nothing like Whembley Stadium, I saw Muse at Vegoose this past summer, and they were INSANE. One of the best sounding bands of the day, in my opinion, and I saw a LOT of bands that day.
Also, their light show was second only to what Daft Punk put out there.

Got the DVD a yesterday...its amazing...I don't know why I haven't seen them live yet. I'm really hoping they come to Vancouver at some point.

What I was pointing out, which I thought would be obvious to most people, is that you don't know what you're talking about, and I was right.
I'm aware that Iron Maiden can rip a wicked guitar solo. Does Iron Maiden also whip out a Rachmaninoff section on the piano in the middle of a song? Does the lead guitarist sing and play piano as well?
You're saying Muse somehow doesn't meet your criteria for being impressive live, I'm saying your criteria is fucking stupid. So there.

Well I got the CD/DVD from Amazon (thx for the link) and I got around to watching it last night. WHOA.
Not knowing what kind of music this was going to be I got to say I was a bit shocked when after the first few songs, he sat down at the piano and BLEW ME AWAY. I was kinda grumbling about how he CAN'T SING..and everytime he opened his mouth he ruined the music..(IMHO) but he sure can do everything else! Great guitar skills and amazing methods I've never seen before. The show was amazing and it's an understatement to say they put on a killer live performance.
I'd still recommend seeing this concert, but it kinda made me think of American Idol rejects thinking they can sing and what would happen if one of those rejects actually made it big time. Super group if he would just shut his hole. (geeze I'm going to get flamed in a big way for this.. but I call it like I see it folks)
Maybe after a few more viewings he'll grow on me.. .. like a fungus.

His voice is actually really, really good. Unless you're some douche that thinks you have to sound like a heavy metal/screamo singer to be "awesome". :p

I HATE, hate, hate "screamo" style. Death metal is worse then rap.. I would have tossed the DVD if it was that type of music, no matter how great the show was.

Mathew Bellamy has a pretty fucking good voice in my opinion, and as someone who has studied voice, that's not a random assertion.

I finally picked this up tonight and just gave it a watch. I immediately thought of Bap's post and came back here to see what everyone has been saying.
I'll get this out of the way first....I absolutely loved it....phenomenal performance, and an amazing demonstration of musicality aside from a couple issues (slow verses in New Born, I'm looking at you). Similar to my other fav band Tool, these guys can perform a live set that sounds like a perfect studio mix. So worthy of praise, it almost can't be said enough.
My only problem with this concert DVD is that the directing was fucking horrid. The camera guys were drunk and/or had turrets syndrome. I have to disagree with Bap's comment about feeling like you are really at the concert. When I go to concerts, I don't fly around the stage and teleport every goddamn 1.5 seconds! Maybe I was too sober, but I just found that all the songs with energy were ruined by a monkey-on-crack director changing shots too often. When I watch concert DVD's, I watch them to actually SEE my favorite musicians play their instruments. I want to see HOW they play those really complex sections of my favorite songs. This was a poor poor example of such.
My other issue is almost completely my OWN issue. I couldn't decide on which audio track to listen to! I started it on the 5.1 track, and was really enjoying the ambience of the crowd noise, and the envelopment of sound filling my room. However, I kept feeling like the high-end was missing. So, I started to swap back and forth with the PCM Stereo track to hear the differences. My god, the PCM track was a night and day difference! The vocals, lead guitar, and piano were 100x more clear and the audio balance overall was much more in line with listening to a mastered CD track. Unfortuneately, I had already grown quite fond of my surround sound crowd-mates, and couldn't switch to PCM. I would totally recommend just leaving it at the default selection of the PCM Stereo track, because hearing it one way and then switching is very jarring.
I would recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat. Well worth $15, and I know the CD portion will continue to increase the value of the package. Great stuff all around, even in light of the direction!

I'm guessing the person who directed the DVD had experience doing music videos. As a general rule for music videos (at least, this is what I learned in college), you typically don't stay on one shot for more than 4-5 seconds on average.
This was a concert DVD, and lies outside those parameters... just saying that might be a reason for the quick cuts. :D

I made the same assumption around 10 minutes into the show. If each song were a seperate music video, each would be awesome. As an entire show, it loses cohesiveness and becomes grating to watch. Still, after listening to the CD portion on my drive to work this morning, I am looking forward to my 2nd viewing.
