View Full Version : Shenmue 3 headed to next gen -- but to which system?

Game site Kikizo has posted an exclusive story (http://games.kikizo.com/news/200508/141_p1.asp) quoting a source involved with the development of Shenmue 3 that the game has been essentially finished but Sega is holding out waiting for a deal for the Shenmue on at least one next-gen console.
Under conditions of strict anonymity, sources close to the development of Shenmue 3 revealed to Kikizo that the project has essentially been close to finished and 'ready' for some time - but in hibernation, pending a deal for the entire series on at least one next-gen console. Kikizo's source is authentic and reliable.
And it may come as a surprise that Yu Suzuki, father of Shenmue and perhaps Sega's most famed game creator, has had very little involvement with the project, bar the original story, which remains in tact. Those are the facts - now let's take a look at everything in more detail.
This article weighs in at three pages and contains some juicy details.

hmm, intersting.
All they need to do is fix the controls... as the Shenmue games had clunkly movement. Maybe they could also liven the games up a bit.. spending 20 minutes going around saying "I am looking for sailors" was not fun.

Yes! Stacking crates and waiting in real time for busses in high definition!

Well, if they say their source is accurate... I guess we have to believe them, don't we? I'd love to see Shenmue 3, but let's be honest: they tried going second party with Shenmue 2 US, and it was a sales disaster. I doubt MS, Sony, or Nintendo will see that and say, "Let's do it again!"

lol
yeah, that's hwat I was thinking. I like the "the source was authentic..." one too. Authentic? Who has to back up their interviews with a disclamer saying the interview really did happen but chronic liars?
"I talked to your brother today. He said to give me twenty dollars.
...
I really did talk to your brother today..."

"Sales disaster" is a relative term, especially when you're just releasing a game that was already done on someone else's dime. It's not like Microsoft had to fund two years of development to get Shenmue II to market - the game already existed.
From the article blurb, it sounds like that's the case again.
I'll allow myself at the very least to inch a wee bit closer to the edge of my seat with this news. Accurate or not (though how can we dispute? I mean, the evidence...), it at least makes me hopeful for what the future of the series might hold. Is that online version still being tossed around or was it nixed? Haven't heard much on it lately.
Either way, I'll at least be able to day-dream about stacking boxes for another x-amount of hours. Do that business in real life and I'd have a fit, do it in a game and I have a ball. Go figure. Further proof that all labor intensive activity should be given over to highly customizable robots that we control with dual shocks.

Yes please let this be true. If it is I hope the gameplay is slightly upgraded but I must know what happens to Ryo. I may have made a sex wee.

Considering how much I absolutely hated the first game and the extremely horrible execution of it, I really really really don't care what they do with #3. Yu Suzuki could stand to learn a lot from old American point-and-click adventures like Monkey Island.

You know, never really thought about comparing the two games but you're right: they're somewhat similar. The only real difference I would probably point to, however, is that the Monkey Island style games more pit you in the role of observer whereas something like Shenmue is more personal. Not sure if that makes sense or not, but I'm much more attached to Ryo than I am, say, Guybrush Threepwood. More of a realistic point-and-click in a way, I suppose. Different type of story to tell.

Mother fuck beans! I certainly hope this is not true, because I have no intention of taking part in the next generation. Ouch, my heart...

Shenmue 3 close to finished and ready for "some time"? That'd be incredible if this was actually real and they had kept S3 that well guarded of a secret. Because as of yet even the most prying Shenmue communities knew nothing as to what kind of work was completed on the game.

You know you want an Xbox 360.
Join me and together we will rule the galaxy as Father and Son.
I'd really like to believe this, but its very unlikely that Sammy would let Sega make another Shenmue.

Hey, they're not SPOnG. I say give them and their source a chance.

Shenmue 2 actually addressed a lot of the issues I had with the first one. The first game was slow, clunky and cut off right when it was getting interesting.
The second game was much better as many of the timesinks were eliminated and the story was both tighter and more interesting. The fact that you went to, what, 3-4 different locations was nice too.
I would love to see a third iteration of this series, if only to wrap up the story. I want to be excited about Shenmue 3. However, since I'm trying to hold off on buying any of the next gen systems for a year or so (on pain of death from my wife) I could handle them taking a year or two to finish it up (and pick a system to release it on).
The main thing is that they need to give the North American audience the option to play with the original language track. Shen2 on the Dreamcast is far superior to the slightly prettier but horrendously dubbed Shen2 on der Xbox.

I loved the first game. it was a little slow, but damn was it fun!
The second game I wasn't able to finish due to time constraints. But I would be very interested in a 3rd game.
Now, the only thing they need to do is finish the series/release the whole thing on one system.
I would replay the whole darn thing if they did that.

Awesome. I love parts 1 & 2 on the Dreamcast, and I'll get whatever console 3 comes out for. Lan Di, you're going down!

Shenmue 2 was a bit slow, it plodded along at points, the gameplay at times wasn't all that compelling, occasionally cringe-worthy dialog, and get me started on the voice acting. But damn if there was something very likeable about that game. Definitely a case of the sum being greater than the parts. Looking forward to the third.

Again I say, play the Dreamcast version of Shenmue 2 and I'm sure you'll agree that it's a much better beast than the mess that is the Xbox one.

I bought the xbox version...and one day I'll end up trying it out. It was on sale for $5 bucks. Yet I hesitated to buy it. The original game just got tedious, and not in a fun way.
