Make of this what you will, but GameStop (http://www.gamestop.com) have reduced the price of both Kameo - Elements of Power and Project Gotham Racing 3 by $10 - bringing their price down to the regular $50!
Kameo - Elements of Power (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=200114)
Project Gotham Racing 3 (http://www.gamestop.com/product.asp?product%5Fid=200119)
Interesting that these price drops occurred following the Xbox 360 dual pricing SNAFU. Conicidence?

Sony tends to price their first-party games $10 less. It's good to see MS following their lead. Or maybe the $60 rumors were just rumors.

I thought it was announced a few weeks back when the original game pricing was listed, I remember them both being cheaper than all the other games.

Damn, Perigon - you'll be blasting away for a long time if that's the case!
only Activision and EA have confirmed $59.99 game prices. Somehow that turned into 'all next-gen games' would be that price.
As long as we don't see PSP pricing I'll be happy. '$24.99 to $49.99'

I think the general consensus has been that next-gen games will be priced at $59.99. It must be true because analysts got paid shitloads of cash to analyze the market and predict it!
When you think about it, the current generation has games priced between $10 and $50, with some even as high as $55 (Halo 2 Limited Edition, Doom 3 Limited Edition, Madden 2005 Limited Edition - PS2).

"In Soviet Russia video game speculates spending $60 on you!"
(I found some great old Yakov Smirnoff material recently that I think applies to the next-gen of gaming and all the rumors that are going around. As I find more I'll post them here.)

The X360 dual sku announcement has nothing to do with the recent reduction in price of the two games listed.
MS is not "trying to placate" potentially angry hard core gamers bilked at the idea of a econo core system sku.

It still feels like price-gouging, unfortunately. "360 games are down to "standard" price? What a deal!" :(

Here's something interesting. I was at EB today asking about my 360 preorder. I wanted to make sure that it was on the premium package and not the core system. The EB manager said, and I quote, "all exisiting preorders are automatically converted into the premium system, we aren't even sure if we are getting the "core" system on launch day."
I found that interesting...granted it's just for that store...might be different for other stores.

One way or another this is gonna be one hell of an expensive launch if I decide to take the plunge.

I got the same thing at my EB here in Nashville.
Very interesting. Is it possible they dropped the core package altogether due to overwhelmingly nedgative feedback? I actually think it is very possible.

Same here. I went in over the weekend and the story I got from my eB guy was pretty much verbatim to yours.
I haven't seen the lower prices quoted yet for the games...but I could deal with a coincidence like that. If they are so concerned about the casual gamer to make this two system setup though, I can't see them trying too hard to bump up game prices...

Wow, might be a ton of pissed customers come the middle of November. Wonder who told them to say that...Microsoft, or EB Headquarters?

I think if they do go for $60 a game they are going to be unhappy at reduced game sales. $40-50 has been the normal price forever. Personally, I'm saying fuck $60 a game.

Okay, is it time to say I told you so yet?
Like I said, all of this is so they can put $299 on the poster outside of GameStop in the mall. Microsoft controls the number of each kind of system that will go to the stores, not the retailer, or the market. Once the average consumer has committed to going to the store to buy it, getting that extra $100 for all the extra stuff (that the sales person will tell you you'll end up buying anyway, for more money) won't be a problem.

I don't know why people keep calling this a price drop. You can't have a drop if you never had a price to begin with. The $60 price was just the retailers' way of making sure they were covered in the event of $60 prices.

Yep, exactly the same in all the stores in and around the Triangle area of North Carolina (yes, I called them all...).

I'm glad to hear that stores realize that the premium package will be by far the larger seller.
I hope they ship enough of the premium packages. It would be a shame to see a lot of core units sold just because they did not analyze the market correctly.

May I ask, in your opinion, what was so "SNAFU" about the dual SKU launch?
You know, for some people this is a good deal, if its not a good deal for you then *gasp* DON'T BUY IT!.

Murm, its a 'forum'. People often post their opinions on a forum. Its not throwing rocks to voice your displeasure at the dual sku launch. Obviously it hasn't been the most popular decision that MS has made. It has raised the ire and concern of a lot of 'hardcore' (what exactly makes a gamer hardcore?) gamers on this site.
For xbox 360 to survive, it will need the hardcore and casual gamer's support. If the casual gamer starts badmouthing the xbox because games don't run smoothly, it will not be good for MS's rep. If the casual gamer feels cheated because they didn't realize everything they would have to buy to get an 'optimized' system, it is bad for MS's rep. I personally hope that MS does well and makes up marketshare to PS3; The market benefits from having three major players. It keeps Sony a little more consumer oriented than they might be if there was only the PS and the Gamecube.

Yes, you may ask. What was so SNAFU about the dual SKU launch was the outcry it caused. If you had bothered browsing some of my earlier comments about the 360 then you would have realized that I'm all for it. In fact, I've already pre-paid my 360 (premium) and I'm very excited about it.
As for rock throwing - not guilty. To deny that the dual sku announcement was anything other than a PR SNAFU would be churlish.

fitabits - I think that their PR engine is a bit naiive for the hardcore gamer. We get the news early and fast. Game developers need to learn to make major announcements like this with the reasons already attached. The problem I think they faced is that the smart strategy for the hardcore gamer market is to discount the core box as a bad investment and to emphasize how core buyers will most probably end up paying more for key components of the system (most notably the HD), but they are releasing the core system to appeal to parents who might not have the money to throw at a $400 game console (plus at least one $60 game).
If you say, "Hey, those people who buy the core system will end up buying the HD anyway because they need it for backwards comaptability, and for certain games to play well (or at all)." then you alienate the market that thinks they are getting a deal with the $300 system.
What I think is that next-gen systems selling well initially will mean more games, more quickly. So let the Moms and Dads having to pinch together enough scratch for Christmas get out the door only spending $360 instead of $460. Fine with me. The kids can go pick up a HD with the money they got from grandma. I'll just be happy that more systems are in homes and what that will mean for my gaming experience.
Also, in regards to game pricing. Ever notice how PS2 games plummet in price more quickly than Gamecube games. Having a huge owner base fuels greater sales potential which fuels more released games which results in lowered game prices.
