I know we don't participate in April Fools jokes around here, and from what I can tell this one isn't. If so it would involve Uwe Boll, The Discovery Channel, and the Postal Movie. How do these things tie together?
Well...they say a picture is worth 1000 words...so here you go (http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/future-weapons/weapons/zone3/slideshow/slideshow.html). (Click #14)
The device was highlighted recently on Discovery Channel’s “FutureWeapons”, right alongside state of the art ordinance such as the Corner-Shot, a rifle with a camera-enabled sighting system capable of firing around corners and interfacing with modular weapons from an AK-47 and grenade launcher to the Cat Silencer itself.
“We’ve always considered ourselves a force for order in a chaotic world,” Running With Scissors CEO and weapon visionary Vince Desi told reporters. “It makes me stiffen with patriotic pride to think about what these weapons R&D people will do with the Badger Buzzsaw in our next game, POSTAL III.”
Was I duped people?

POSTAL's Legendary “Cat Silencer” Enters US Army's Arsenal
Tucson, AZ: The growing link between the military establishment and videogame developers just got a little tighter as one of the most controversial implements in the POSTAL game series arsenal—the “Cat Silencer”—is now part of real world, cutting edge weapons technology.
The “Cat Silencer” device that Uwe Boll spent a fortune to develop as a special effect for his upcoming “Postal - The Movie” (to be released May 23rd) is now ready for real world use by police and military forces around the world. In fact, the device was highlighted recently on Discovery Channel’s “FutureWeapons”, right alongside state of the art ordinance such as the Corner-Shot, a rifle with a camera-enabled sighting system capable of firing around corners and interfacing with modular weapons from an AK-47 and grenade launcher to the Cat Silencer itself.
To actually see this fearsome new POSTAL inspired WMD-like peripheral in action, click here then click on number 14 to see an actual team up between the Corner-Shot and the Cat Silencer.
"And just for the record, no real cats were used, armed or harmed by Running WIth Scissors," noted animal lover VInce Desi assured the press.
For more information on the upcoming POSTAL Movie, Postal games and gear, as well as updates on the development of POSTAL III visit our new expanded site www.gopostal.com and be sure to visit PostalNation.net for in-depth coverage of the RWS scene.

I've long said I wanted to see the Postal movie. I think it's the one movie Uwe Boll was put on Earth to make correctly. That said, man that's a great idea.

I read a review a while back, apparently Postal didn't totally suck. Amazingly. Then again, I suppose you can only go up considering the source inspiration.

Sounds like a real device they humorously linked to for PR.
It actually makes sense. One of the biggest dangers in MOUT is exposing your barrel and giving away your position. We've known for awhile weapons were being developed to aim around corners... camouflage for them just seems natural. (Even if it's a kitty ;))
I pity the millions of cats that will get shot because they look like camo. :D

I just can't see soldiers or SWAT teams using this pretty much at all. But who am I to judge? Maybe having a stuffed animal on hand can calm your nerves when the lead flies.

Actually, that's a very good point. I have to wonder about the legality of the technique. There are very specific rules about disguising yourself as a non-combatant when you are a soldier.
Article 37 of Protocol I relating to the Protection of Victims of International Armed Conflicts states in part:
It is prohibited to kill, injure or capture an adversary or resort to
perfidy. Acts inviting the confidence of an adversary to lead him to
believe that he is entitled to, or is obliged to accord, protection under
the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, with intent
to betray that confidence, shall constitute perfidy. The following acts
are examples of perfidy:
(a) the feigning of an intent to negotiate under a flag of truce or of a
surrender;
(b) the feigning of an incapacitation by wounds or sickness;
(c) the feigning of civilian, non-combatant status; and
(d) the feigning of protected status by the use of signs, emblems or
uniforms of the United Nations or of neutral or other States not Parties
to the conflict.
The reason the practice has been deemed illegal is that disguising yourself as a non-combatant (in this case a cat) encourages the enemy to kill all similar non-combatants in the future.

If this isn't an April Fool's, then I've officially lost all hope that humanity will eventually turn a corner and get a damn grip!

I don't think it is. It's not actually a cat silencer. It's a camouflage mod for a rifle that can shoot around corners. They took a stuffed animal and attached it to the contraption presumably so that an enemy wouldn't see the rifle barrel peeking around a corner. The target would hopefully instead see only a harmless kitty looking at him when the round plugged him between the eyes. Cunning, really.

It is obviously a joke. There is no way you could even site down the rifle with that "camouflage" on the barrel. Nevermind the fact that a stuffed cat on the end of your weapon does little to disguise the armored, prone and aimed in military looking person behind it! :D

Check the linked article at Discovery. It's not really a silencer. The barrel is able to shoot around corners. Here is the manufacturer's site (http://www.cornershot.com/). The weapon is sighted via a LCD monitor that flips out on the side of the casing. The stuffed cat is only there to disguise the barrel when it pokes around corners.
The only part of the article that is a prank is the idea that Postal has anything to do with it.
Edit: Here's a video (http://www.combatvids.com/showvideo.php?id=1880) showing it in action.

Obviously I know it's not a cat silencer. ;)
But the idea that a stuffed cat is going to somehow disguise the rifle has to be one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen. If it is real, which I still contend it is not, then the company that came up with it is full of morons.
In fact, I would contend that this would draw attention to a position. Why? Cats are skittish. A stationary cat next to a wall in the middle of a firefight is a dead give away of something not right.
Real? Dumbest military idea ever.
Fake? Not a bad April Fools Joke.

I actually have no trouble believing that it's a "homebrew mod" done by a soldier or some overzealous R&D tester. Remember that the Isrealis came up with the idea of mounting a cheap videocamera to an RC plane as a precursor to the UAV that we love so much in the US military.

I remember way back before any military use rc nuts were strapping cameras to anything they could. too bad they didnt patent it :)

Wait, wouldn't you have to use the gun at ground level, otherwise you have a fucking cat floating in midair?
If I saw a cat floating in midair, I would be tossing grenades, that shit is unholy.

Then, as I said, it's the dumbest idea ever.
"How did you end up the target of such concentrated fire, Corporal?"
"I don't know, sir. I had my rifle's Cat Disguise on properly. There was no way they could have known I was there!"

I imagine this would be used BEFORE a large firefight breaks out. So-called "targets of opportunity". In that case, seeing a cat standing still, a thousand yards away, might not be that conspicuous.

lol I can tell you that if my CO came to me and said, "Put this dead cat on your rifle as camo" I'd tell him to jump off the rappelling tower. :D
And if a sniper needs a stuffed cat in order to keep the enemy from seeing him, that sniper needs to turn in his ghillie suit.

Haha, yeah I know it's not a real dead cat but it sure as hell looks like one. ;)
Of course, if the enemy saw what you were trying to do they might be too busy laughing their asses off to shoot you. In fact, they might take pity on you for being such a dumb ass and let you go without incident.

I remembered thinking that exact same thing when I watched this episode of Futureweapons. Sadly, it is real. Unless Futureweapons decided to throw an April Fools joke in a couple months ago. :)
