The Independent (http://news.independent.co.uk) is reporting (http://news.independent.co.uk/business/comment/article307218.ece) that Fox has purchased IGN Entertainment, which went up for sale rather publically a few months ago. With the purchase, Fox acquires not only IGN, but Fileplanet, Rotten Tomatoes and Gamespy.
The estimate price of the purchase is a gob-smacking (US)$800,000,000, a price only those with serious intentions would be prepared to pay.
Heh, I wonder if we'll be seeing much of a bias in the reviews towards Fox owned franchises?

The article you posted pretty much stems out of this one (http://www.revolutionmagazine.com/News/index.cfm?fuseaction=ViewNewsArticle&newsID=491762) and I doubt we'll get the official word until tomorrow (or later) if anything actually happened.
Jesus Christ, I knew IGN got a lot of traffic, but 800 million? Gawddamn!
Their shares were estimated at $1 billion in the middle of Summer 2005, but there's no way they'll push anyone to pay that much.
P.S. - The topic is kind of misleading considering the fact that no one knows if the deal went through, but whatever. :)
P.S. #2 - Looks like News Corp got approved to complete its purchase of Intermix today (http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20050822/tc_nm/media_intermix_antitrust_dc_1).

Sweet. Republicans needed to add a gaming site to their media noise engine.
One more reason not to use IGN except for their exclusive videos.

Meh, as long as the content stays solid I could care less if Uncle Fester owns it. But I definitely will watch for any biases toward Fox or subsidiary owned games.
As slow as IGN is, I'm surprised it was worth that much. Whye xactly was IGN worth that much??

The ability for Fox to report any sort of news to any sort of living being in any sort of matter.
They could still report to inanimate objects though.

We'd only be able to determine that if Evil filled the front page up with about 15 more conveniently-placed ads. That is unless I've undermined the power of the Dark Age of Camelot ad at the top of the page, in which case I'll gladly go into exile wherever I'm told to go.

and I agree about the "first" post. You should ban his IP, even. "First" is post with zero content, not even a lame attempt at a joke or an effort to piss people off. Although, seeing someone that retarded at the internet does piss me off. Hmmm...

It's that control over everything we see and hear that's got Bush's job performance at around 40%. Anyway, Fox is a business, it'll do what's good for its business. And Fox News has never jumped all over the video games=violence in the way that CNN or the network news channels have. This could be because, as LotRHM pointed out, Fox has been in the video game business for years (and made AvP for that matter).
I was running a video game event and some anchors and producers from the Today Show were covering it, all of them were of the opinion that violent video games needed to be regulated and they damaged children. So complain all you like about conservatives, but liberals are leading the charge against video game violence. Hillary Clinton and Joseph Liberman anyone? Of all the news posts on this site about some politician trying to ban video games, to a person they were all Democrats.

John McCain, anyone? He's not out in front of this stuff like Hillary and Liberman have been, but yeah, he's a Republican that is against games. Something to keep in mind when he runs for the nomination. There wasn't an article about an innitiative of his on this site so my point stands, banning games is in no way a conservative agenda. There are a few who support it, though.

How the hell is banning a billion dollar industryconservative anyways?

 Trying to ban anything that rakes in that much tax money would be a step in the wrong direction for US' money problems.

My usual stupid question (its like my trademark - its what I do): does this mean that we might see publishers shying away from making stupid exclusive deals with fileplanet since they are essentially making a deal with a rival publisher? I can only see that as a good thing.

McCain tends to side with Democrats, more than Republicans anymore. Having a little R next to your name, doesn't neccessarily make you a true Republicrat.

Actually, McCain is a pretty big-time Republican.
He beleives in smaller government, fiscal responsibility (lower taxes AFTER you pay the budget), and personal liberties.
That means that he isn't making friends with the current administration that is all about spend-spend-spend and a laws that destroy rights to privacy.
Which group is a true Republican? The one that is in office or the one that follows the platform that Republicans vote for?
How? Fox has been heavily involved in the video game industry for years, so I don't see how this represents any great sea change for the company.
Yes. Games are made for young people/kids. News and the condemnation of games is a product for parents/adults. By telling parents games are evil, and in turn the parents attempting to stop kids from playing the games, the kids want the games even more. Major corporations have long been in the business of producing the very socially-distructive products their news channels condemn. Nothing new to see here.
