Man this has got to be one of the weakest summer movie seasons in a long time. I'm sure 40 year old Virgin is funny, but the whole summer has been nothing but crap.

I'm glad to see 40 Year Old Virgin do well; Steve Carrell is a funny guy that deserves this. I have a special place in my heart for Daily Show correspondents past and present.

Malovech, what are you talking about? I got 2 fantastic movies this summer: Batman and Wedding Crashers. Not to mention I did enjoy War of the Worlds and Fantastic Four.

I can remember a few summers ago when the best movie to come out was that piece of shit Bad Boys 2.

As well, I fully intend to see 40-YOV this afternoon, it's getting great reviews.

Edit: Oh yeah, and I really liked Dukes of Hazzard as well. Fuck the critics, it was a fun romp.

40-year Old Virgin and Red-eye are both getting damn good reviews. Both above 85% on Rotten Tomatoes. I saw 40YOV and thought it was hilarious, though I preferred Wedding Crashers a smidge more.

Hey Evil, nice thread in the Gametab forum ;)

Excellent! I'm glad that Steve Carrell has a hit on his hands. And I'm also delighted that the penguins are continuing their steady march!

Oddly enough I don't... And I don't think the guy is all that funny... Maybe I'll have to see this movie to change my opinion, we shall see....

Give me Serenity already...

Kelegacy, did you by any chance see Bewitched?

Nora Ephron's movies make me want to cut my eyes out and cram them in my ears, but I went to see this one for the cast. Stephen Colbert and Steve Carell I knew about, but I was pleasantly surprised when Mo Rocca made a brief appearance too. (and while not a Daily Show-alum, Amy Sedaris's bit at the end was nice too)

The last predictions I saw had 40YOV coming in second behind Red Eye. This is great news. I can't wait for it to hit Australia.

Nope, didnt see Bewitched. I didnt hear alot of good about it. I love Farrell, but didnt enjoy the premise much. Old School, though, was a fabulous Farrell flick, as long as you dont go into it expecting much more than cheap laughs and Will acting like a stupendously funny douche!

My buddy saw 40 Year-Old Virgin this weekend and said it was great. I honestly haven't heard about it at all till now, but that's what I get for not having television most of this month.

Not having a television isnt a bad thing. You won't be brainwashed by metrosexual Old Navy ads, big-boobed beer commercials or teeny bopper MTV bubblegum crap. I have 70 odd channels with my basic cable service and use about 5 at most. It's a very retarded medium lately.

this is why I pay $10/month to get my local channels in crystal clear...then pay the big bucks for high-speed interweb.
It's not like our tv is on for more than a couple of hours a night, usually to watch a movie that we rent from Netflix.

As for the summer movies, Batman was great, star wars was meh-good, charlie and the choclate factory was a suprise great, the rest I'm passing on/waiting for DVD.

I've actually been getting all my favorite tv shows from bit torrent tv sites. I get all my favorite shows that way: Six Feet Under, Sopranos, Deadwood, Over There, and soon Ultimate Fighter 2.

I'm actually considering cancelling my cable since I don't use it much. I don't watch anything other than my favorite shows. Why should I have to pay 80 dollars a month for 5 tv channels. This goes back to the free market/regulation debate we had regarding the U.S. only being ranked 16th world wide when it comes to connectivity. I can't want until someone has the balls to force cable companies to drop their package shit and allow people to pay for the channels they want.

I have cable internet and television. I realized I didnt use my television much last fall besides gaming, so I figured I'd save some money and have my cable tv shut off (saving me nearly 50 bucks a month). Well, I called and cancelled, but my cable never stopped coming. The same line that gets the cable internet also gets the tv signal, but it's spliced away and runs to an adjacent room. I dont know the exact explanation, but I'm guessing this is why I still get cable, even though I dont readily pay for it. Still, my cable bill is about almost 60 bucks a month for internet alone, so I dont feel like I'm doing anything heinous.

I really don't see how Red Eye got such great reviews. I saw it and it was a really bad film. It was extremely predictable and the acting wasn't that great. Because it was so bad, I was laughing the entire time. So if the reviewers rate it based on how funny it was it would definitely receive high ratings.

I'm avoiding Red Eye like the plague. Cilian Murphy is a glaikit-looking turd! As is Jake Gyllenhal (sp?). I wish they would both just bugger off and play with each other - leave the acting to the pros.

according to someone my wife used to work with, there's something about the internet line that forces the cable to stay on.
oh, and $60 for just internet? ouch

we pay about $42/month + 9.99 for TV.
with taxes and everything we pay about 60

I saw Broken Flowers (the new Bill Murray movie) this weekend and thought it was quite good. My girlfriend liked it a lot, she wants to see it again already. She liked it more than Lost in Translation. Anyway, it's pretty good.

And on the cable stuff, I have a lot of channels, though I really only watch the HD channels and the movie channels. I love HBO for its original shows (Deadwood, Entourage, Sopranos) and boxing. Cinemax has pretty good movies as well, and Starz has pretty good movies, though they repeat everything they show too much. I am also starting to like Showtime, they have a good new show (Weeds), and decent boxing on once a month or so. Because my girlfriend and I like these movie channels, we could only really get rid of The Movie Channel and the digital tier of service which would only save us like $12. We don't rent very many movies anymore, we just catch them a month or 2 later when they hit the movie channels. Our bill is kinda enormous though.

Yeah, I haven't missed it much. We'll be getting free satellite soonish and that'll be nice, but I also only use tv for three or four different channels tops.

Kelegacy, the way they shut down your cable TV is by a fillter that they have to physically put on your line. This is usually done at the "box", ex. the panel at the side of your house or whatnot. Sounds like they didn't bother to come out and do that when you cancelled.

For the record, I thought 40YOV was hysterical. It's also a good movie, which is to say it has a good plot with developed characters that you can empathize with.

I strongly recommend it - doubly so if you're on a date.

Malovech, you must be a Nintendo fanboi...that is, the non-existant game library of the Gamecube and DS must be frustrating you in many ways. Well, there's always Nintendogs to plug'in and play.

He comes around from time to time. It's Ken Kutaragi, for sure. I'm a Sony fan, but this guy takes it to extremes.

Yeah, 40YOV was alright. I far prefer comedies which are based on funny yet basically sane people, instead of complete morons placed in a series of wacky situations. Daily Show humor instead of SNL humor.

Broken Flowers was okay, but Murray doesn't exactly nail his character, and the beginning is painfully slow and repetitive. And to say the allusions lack subtlety would be a ridiculous understatement. Not a bad film, but Jim Jarmusch has done a lot better.

40 YOV was absolutely hilarious.

I'd say that it's essentially American Pie for adults. I can't remember grinning and laughing so much in a movie theatre in ages.
