SOE is gearing up to run a special bout of third anniversary events for its MMO, The Matrix Online, beginning March 20th and concluding on April 3rd. This includes new in-game events as well as special items and player parties. Read the full press release below for detailed info.
Official Release:
The Matrix Online (MxO) celebrates its third anniversary with in-game events and parties, along with Game Update 59 set to debut in April. Some in game features include:
The Return of the Smith Virus
* The ever-popular Smith Virus returns in this year’s anniversary as it seeks to infect all those in the Matrix.
* Players can approach a virologist near various city monuments who will present them with a ticket to begin a mission leading to the Oracle.
* Complete the mission from the Oracle and get “Smith’s End Brownie” which cures players of the Smith Virus infection. Players can even throw the brownie at infected people to cure them of the virus.
* Watch out for “Smithlings” but if one is encountered one, he might drop a “Smith Frag” for usage.
Don’t Forget About the Goodies
* Have an extra Smith Frag or Smith’s End Brownie? Take them to a virologist to get items available only during the anniversary! Don’t worry, once these special items are acquired they are then accessible year-round.
* Items available during the MxO Anniversary
o 20+ t-shirts with 12 new types this year
o Oracle Anniversary Cookies which provide additional healing from any damage you might incur from fighting those devious Smithlings or other foes.
o Smith Rage Pills that temporarily confer combat buffs similar to those received from the Smith Virus.
o Smith Firewall Candy – new this year! These candies award players temporary immunity against Smith Virus infections – a must for any brave operatives!
In-Game Party
* Party with developers, Rarebit, Walrus, Virrago, Moonlite, Brewko, 9mmfu and Dracomet and other players on Friday, March 21st from 3-5pm PST on the Syntax server in Camon Heights Park to chat and celebrate MxO’s 3rd birthday.
Does anyone still play this? I only have experience from the Monolith/WB days and am wondering if SOE's management has been for the better or worse.

Hehe I guess I missed that line on my original read-through but now that I see it my co-workers have no clue as to why I am busting up laughing right now.

I could of sworn SOE cancelled this game less than a year after they bought it.
edit - guess I was wrong went to the official Matrix Online forums there is a dev post there about the 3rd aniv. celebration it doesn't mention anything about the Brownie but there is another post that takes about them fixing the Smith Firewall Candy and the t-shirts being available so I'd bet this is true.
My guess?

Nah, it's pretty real, unfortunatly.
I could of sworn SOE cancelled this game less than a year after they bought it.
SOE never cancels anything, they just include it in the Stationaccess and lets it live on lifesupport.

Nope, it is still around and apparently, SOE gave it the 'Combat Upgrade' treatment. I disliked how they handled SWG (I loved HAM - for those who know what that means). I wasnt sure what a CU would mean for MXO, however.

I remember thinking it was kind of fun in the beta, but I was hooked into WoW at that point.
I do think it's been interesting how they've continued the story of the Matrix within the game (although Morpheus dying pisses me off as a concept).

I remember before the game came out, the interviews with the devs really made the combat seem interesting. The way multiple fighting styles between players would interlock almost, creating what would seem like a choreographed fight scene.
I don't think it turned out that well in the final game though.

I tried it in beta and was amazingly disappointed both with the performance and with the actual implementation of all the devs concept. I remember seeing videos that made it look like they were doing fight scenes right out of the movie. The actual game seemed to have none of that.

Is there a 10 free trial or any thing like that for this game I would love to give it a spin but am in no way willing to buy it or make the monthly commitment?

You had to be pretty high level to do the fancy looking fighting.

Didn't run it but I was involved with it for sometime...it was some guy named Sundog that ran it.....until he dropped off the face of the earth one day.

I want to see the Matrix Online anniversary MMO thread stickied :).
I remember playing this game upto the move to Sony. I would have a quick look at the site on the rare occasion and was always surprised to see it was still going. As mentioned by others, if they had a 10 day trial I'd be all over jumping back in to check out the changes.

Evidently...all of them.

Maybe.
But a little Smith mouthwash will take care of that.
With a side of Smith shame.

I actually re-activated my account last month -- I'd just re-watched the Matrix trilogy and was craving the setting, though I only player for a day or so.
I never could get into the game, even in the very beginning. The events were interesting, but laggy(as all MMO events seem to be). I think I made it to level 12 or 14... I had hyper jump, I remember. I just hated the combat so much, and the random quest generator that you had to rely on after level 10 or so.

WHAT!?
This is still up!?
I tried this a month after release back in the day, think I picked it up for about $20. I remember playing it for about 10 minutes, and woke up an hour later when i fell out of my chair.

I downloaded this when they put it up for free trial recently. It was terrible, and I only played for about an hour or two before getting disgusted.

I played for a while during the beta and then after launch, right up until SOE took the reins, like many of you. I enjoyed it while it was fresh and new. I wonder how many of you I knew in-game?

Wow I'll 2nd (or 14th, or whatever) the "WTF? This is still around?" After that though, I've got to go make a batch of GrenadeMagnet's End Brownies. Later.

I had no idea this was still running. It can't possibly still have even a moderately sized player base.

Probably not. There were deep, terrible flaws in the mission system. The fighting system was really only designed for 1 on 1 fights. Those two items are the heart of the gameplay and they are totally busted.

But it was still endlessly thrilling jumping huge distances over buildings and cityscapes. I never got tired of that and used to love when we'd host Jump Races. :)

You could also do that crap in City of Heroes...which was easily a far better game. You also didn't have to look like a Hot Topic reject the entire time, either!

This is one MMO I never started playing, and after they added it to the Station Online Access, I still didn't get it.
Just wasn't interested in getting in to / out of the Matrix.

I was in the beta, though I don't remember most of it. I do remember really liking the concept, and the being able to enter any building thing was awesome, laggy as hell, but awesome.
It also struck me with good vibes when I looked out of a random window after taking the elevator up a random building. You could look out over the cityscape and that to me was impressive. Damn it! This is one of those games that you wish beyond wishes it was what it should have been.
Also, I could have sworn to anyone who asked that they canceled MxO. I was certain of it! My mouth dropped when I read the headline. My god! Did I just skip into a parallel universe again?
Same thing happened at my local rollercoaster park. I'm certain that the Demon had three loops, not two...
