View Full Version : [FFXI] BCNMs {Do you need it?}

So this post is mostly for Mot Wakorb, UWCrash, and Koi, as they're the only ones I know of on Asura who are high enough (anyone and everyone else is welcome, though). So, any of you guys up for scheduling doing some BCNMs? I have literally 932 seals that I'd like to go through eventually, and as I'm getting SCH higher, I'm looking more and more at gear I'd like to get that is increasingly expensive.
Now, I'm a total BCNM noob, I've done maybe 2 in my entire FFXI career. So, any suggestions on what to do? For 60 caps I have BLM, BST, and soon SCH available. For 50 caps I have BLM, BST, SCH, and RDM. For 40 caps I have BLM, BST, SCH, RDM, WHM, and THF, and for 30 caps I have BLM, BST, SCH, RDM, WHM, THF, WAR, MNK, and NIN.
ENMs, ISNMs, and Assaults are also options, but again, I've never done those either. Well, I've done one ENM up in the range, but that was a long time ago.
Actually, I'd really like to do Assaults as well, so there's another thing that could be done.
I'm guessing that unless there are more people on, targeting 3 man BCs would be best, but I really don't know where to go from there. If you guys are interested but don't know either, I can always do some research, I'd just rather go with experience.

I'm getting close to 30, but it'll probably be a while before I can do this stuff. You might want to ask the LS.

Yeah, I was thinking of that. I really need to visit that LS site and get registered and everything.

Definitely up for it once I hit 30, been accruing plenty of seals.
I'm up for anything as BST, and possibly WHM in the future after I get the hang of my old jobs again.
What is this LS you are mentioning?

I highly recommend that you guys just dump all your seals into doing Under Observation (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Under_Observation). The strategies (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Under_Observation/Strategies) on the FFXI Wiki page are pretty solid. It's not too hard and for three people @ lvl 40. Get peacock charm (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Peacock_Charm), sell for big $$, do not pass go, do not collect 200 dollars, rinse, repeat.

Not a bad idea there. I know I can bring the BST, BLM, or RDM in the strats. Isn't the drop rate on the PC terribly low, though? It says 5.6%.

...only 5% of the time? So you need to do it roughly 20 times to get one? For each person?

I did this a couple times on Bahamut with some LS mates and we didn't see a charm drop. Actually we got quite some terrible drops when we did it, but it is very easy to do with 3 x BLM. If you have the seals to use and want a chance at getting a PCC I'd say go for it, and good luck!

A long time ago (before they started dealing with the gilsellers) I was invited to do a few Under Observation runs. We had one charm drop as well as a few Utsusemi: Ni scrolls, which was how I ended up with my Ni scroll and the 8mil I paid for my Scorpion Harness back in the day. I also did some lv40 fight against a bunch of leeches in Balgas Dais, but that was just some impromptu thing where a couple of random Summoners asked me to go and pop Invincible.
Honestly, I'm not sure which BCNMs are the most profitable. I know FFXIAH has a sort of list, but I haven't looked at it recently. The strategies for the 3-man BCNMs usually involves a lot of mages and kiting, so I don't know how useful I would be (my highest mage job is BLM and WHM at 20). The few times I did Under Observation we actually used 2xNIN/WHM (for paralyzna) and a RDM/BLM kiting/nuking the big hecteyes.
I know Mot and I are definitely up for BCNMs and Assault, although we'd have to pick a level cap for Assault since neither of us is 75, plus we're both ranked Private Second Class so we only have access to the initial Assaults. I've never really looked at ISNM, and honestly we are nowhere in CoP, so the list of ENMs we could do is pretty short. I did Promyvion-Dem on my hume as RNG/NIN, but that's been it.
Here's the list of caps I have jobs at
Hume: 60 - THF, 40 NIN, 30 RNG, 20 WHM RDM
Galka: 70 - PLD, 40 WAR, 30 NIN, 20 THF SMN

There's something I've been wondering about the FFXI economy.
Where do all these millions of gil come from?
As far as I can tell, nearly all money made is from other players, and the price of items being sold to NPCs is paltry. Gil drops from monsters are tiny. Even rewards from missions are only in the thousands. How do all these people end up with millions?
Cyndair

Yeah, the drop rate on the charm is pretty low but the payout makes it worth it. You can always count on the charm selling for a good amount since it is such a great low lvl item. (Plus camping Argus for the Rare/Ex version is a nightmare) Nothing else coming out of a standard BCNM will come close. (especially one that only takes three people ;) )

Well, I've never done an Assault, so we're on even ground there. I'd really like to, though, because they sound like a lot of fun.
Hell, I don't even know what it takes to do an ISNM. I'd just like to try some of that stuff out, really, and the BCNMs we could all use, as everyone needs some gil.
As far as ENMs, I'm pretty sure you don't need to have any CoP done as long as you have access to the area that they're in. I know there's some in Molvopolis and Ule[TAB] Range.

So maybe we can try to get together once a week to do BCNMs/Assaults? I'm good any night after 7:30 EST until probably 11:30. When is good for everyone else?
Once or twice a week sounds like a reasonable amount to schedule. I'm pretty much available at 7:30 EST on most nights unless I'm busy with schoolwork.

That sounds good. Really, It'd be best if it were just planned for 1 specific night a week anyway. To be more accommodating, maybe 9 EST would be the best time? Is there any day of the week that's off limits to anyone? Having young children, the concept of a "weekend" is foreign to me.

My understanding from playing FFXI a while ago, is very little money actually leaves the economy, so the balanced is maintained. In WoW, a lot more money comes into the economy, but a lot more is taken out in terms of mounts, skill training and repairs.

Gil leaves the economy in a number of ways. Chocobos, buying from shops, getting on the ferries/airships, etc... all lead to gil being removed from the economy. The biggest, though, is Dynamis, which has a 1 million gil entrance fee. Now, split between 50+ people, that's not so bad, which is normally what you take into Dynamis.

I can see where the balance is maintained, since there are so few sinks, but I still don't see where it comes from. Are there repeatable quests that I don't know about that earn tens of thousands of gil?

Well, you have to remember, the game has been running for nearly 6 years now, so gil has built up over time. Missions can net some gil, for example Rank 10 gets you 100k, and most people 70+ have gotten Rank 10 in at least one nation. There's also the gil drops from mobs, which adds up over time. Also, there's selling items to NPCs, which used to be very profitable for some items.
I'm willing to bet a few billion gil entered the economy from people selling fish to NPCs alone back a few years ago before that was "nerfed". That used to be a big moneymaker, so far as you could fish up 60k per hour on fish, and some people (re: assholes) botted fishing 24/7 before they fixed that as well.

Ahh, this is making more sense now. I had dismissed selling to NPCs entirely, but I myself have sold some fish that don't sell well on the AH (Gold Carp, I think) to NPCs.
I suppose all the money from players who played and quit is still floating around the economy, too.

Something I personally do if I want "quick cash" is to farm Quadav Helms in Beadeaux. With Treasure Hunter II on my lv67 Thief, they probably have a drop rate at or above 50%. I go there with an almost empty inventory, load up on 30+ of them, and then turn them in for a repeatable quest in Bastok Mines for 900gil each. Some people also sell them on the AH because people with high Smithing can desynth them into Darksteel Ingots, but they usually only go for 1000-1200, and I'd rather take the fast cash.
I can't think of any other quests that can turn around cash that fast (or I'd be doing them :P). There's repeatable quest in Sandy that gives you 2100gil for 3xBlack Tiger Fangs, but their drop rate is kind of low and at best the spawns are very spread out in Batallia Downs. Killing Battering Rams in LaTheine Plateau can also get you Lanolin Cubes which sell to a vendor for about 600gil each (and they're stackable, Quadav Helms are not), but there are only 2 ram spawns and they're on a ~10min respawn timer (I know my rams...I've farmed a lot of Ram Leather for leveling Leatherworking and to sell on the AH).

Oh, if I really needed the cash I could just fish. ~86 fishing skill and a Lu Shang can bring in a pretty tidy profit. I just figured it'd be nice to do some BCNMs 1) because I've never really done them and 2) they sound like fun.

Dunno about Asura, but on Valefore moat carp went for about 20k a stack, which was always a good way to build up money as a low-level. I'm surprised that there are so many people that want a Lu Shang's rod haven't gotten one yet (I'm guessing that's why carp sell so fast).
edit: As a high-level RDM, I always had fun hunting down elementals and selling off the crystal stacks. Not as profitable as some things, but it kept me from idling somewhere, which I hate.

I didn't mean to say that Quadav Helms was a great way to earn cash, in fact it's kind of slow. I could usually get a port to Dem from Mot, but afterwards I need to run to Dem and choco down to Bastok. I usually only do it if I need pocket change because I've just made a huge purchase or am waiting for crap to sell because everything I have on the AH is being undercut.
And I'm looking forward to BCNMs as much as you. I actually have a few orbs on my hume already because the first time I "quit" I bought one of each type that was available at the time. I used the 40BS orb when I did Under Observation, but I still have the 20/30/50/60 orbs on me. Not sure how many seals my humehas left, but I know my galka has a few hundred.

Actually there's a daily cap on how many fish you can catch. I believe it's something like pulling up your line 200 times, whether you get a fish or item. There was a fishing overhaul a couple years ago that added that cap, and changed how you fish altogether. It didn't use to be a minigame...you'd just see whether or not something caught the hook and then you hit enter to try to reel it in. It's part of the reason I never leveled it until the change.
And Lu Shang's can definitely break, but the nice thing about repairing fishing rods is that it's almost impossible to lose the broken rod if the synthesis fails. The "almost" part is if you get attacked by a mob or the ship pulls into the harbor while you're attempting the synth, you lose all of the materials guaranteed. Most "serious" fishermen have a woodworking skill around 70+ just so they can repair the rod. You could attempt it at a little bit lower skill, but you'd be going through so many light crystals you'd start ripping your hair out.

Yeah, it was a bit nuts looking back on it. But, I did it before the big fishing change, so it was actually pretty easy. I just read a book (a couple actually) while doing it, since it didn't require much attention at all.
I mainly did it then because my wife and I were playing together at the time, and she was taking night classes. I figured it was a good way to do something that would benefit me for a long time ingame while not leveling ahead of her in any way.

It can break, but only on Legendary fish, something I avoid anyway.

Very true. I never bothered to level woodworking since I avoid ferry fishing and legendaries in general, but you can get it fixed without that. There's a quest (I don't recall which, I think in Rabao) that you can do to fix it that's rather easy.

The most expensive item that drops in a lv20 BCNM is the Astral Ring (lv10, Converts 25HP to MP, sells for about 150k right now), and it looks like that's only for Wings of Fury. It's soloable (but not easy) by a 20BST/WHM, and sounds pretty easy for 2xBST and WHM.

I don't play anymore but I remember fighting the NM in dunes (hairpin) at lvl25 sam lmao. I had 300%tp and meditation if I remember correctly (been like 4 years I think). I was running around the spawn point and seen the NM (man the name is bugging me I can't remember it) and other campers were doing the same thing. I rushed to the NM and kept hitting voke and got it. Doing my best to waste this fucking thing (way to high for a 25 solo but I was a noob and thought it's a 25 and so am I lmao) and I have like 1 hit remaining and another camper must have felt bad for me and he healed me until I worked the NM. I looked in the log and yep it said emp pin. The guy who helped me said I needed the money more than him and then logged off. It sounds unreal or like BS but it happened. Best moment I had with the game if not the best gaming moment I have ever had.
On a side note I used to play on ps2 and had this logitech keyboard/ps2 controller combo. I had it set up so that you could press voke via a macro and man I claimed every NM I saw. I only got the emp pin and the leaping boots though. I quit the game at lvl 47 or so because I just hated being a sam (no invites) and the area I was in to lvl was just way to hurting (I can't remember the name of the area but I remember a bunch of crawlers)
Lmao I remember now Crawlers nest.
I wish square would do another MMO the game was great but the population died down to much making grouping a bitch to get setup in later lvl's.

Yeah that's the name. Kujita? I think it was the name of my server. Bilaal was my name. There was a shortage for me. I was a sam and by the time I hit 40's no one was really lvling their main. The big gripe for me was the low amount of whm's. I know i could have just been one but all the time it took me to get to 47sam to only be lfg for 2hours+ because of either no whm's or my job wasn't as good as thf etc drove me to quit.

You're thinking of Kujata.
Oh, there are still times that happens, you just get bad nights, but things are different these days with that, for the most part.
And Samurai these days? Man, they just kick ass. They've buffed Samurai a lot over the past year and a half, it's kinda nuts.

I really didn't want to play FFXI anymore after quitting last April. I was on Valefore and it felt like a struggle just to get a party going. I sat around for 4-5 days with my LFG flag up for 2-3 hrs a night before I quit (was in Kazham with a lvl 28 job). Asura feels a little deserted at low levels, but once you hit 15-20, it seems like there's a lot more people. I'm definitely a lot happier on Asura. I was LFG for about 2 hrs before I got into a party the first night I put my party flag up.
If you really want to play, spending the $25 for a server transfer is worth it, IMO.

I've got a character at 31 now, by the way, so if anyone wants to pursue any 30 cap BCNMs, I'm in on it!
I've been doing BCNM20 and BCNM30 runs with another BST in the TMC ls, so if you want to try doing them with us, let me know. /tell Catatafish ;)
Too bad I only have like 50 seals left. No good drops from the 30 so far (trying to get utsusemi:ni), but got a running total of 2 astral rings off the 20.

Damn I wish they did that when I was playing.

I have a bunch of seals and would love to try a few BCNM20s. I'll try to look you up next time I'm in-game.

I'm up for BCNMs, but I only have WHM and BLM with which to work.
If it hasn't already been mentioned, Treasure and Tribulations (http://wiki.ffxiclopedia.org/wiki/Treasure_and_Tribulations) is a solid BCNM to get rid of those extra seals..although it's not a serious money maker, it can be done solo.

I have a BCNM request. I have to look and see how many beastman seals I have, but I want to do the BCNM that drops Utsusemi: Ni. I'll have more details when I'm actually at home and can check my mog,but I think I have enough to do it at least twice.
edit: Crappity crap crap. I just found out it's a BCNM40. I only have one job at 40. I guess I should level up WHM or BLM a few levels this weekend.

I just did this on my retired thief (who I only ever use to farm) and actually won. Of course the drops were practically worthless...oh well. Guardian's Ring and Freeze.

There's actually more than one bcnm that drops utsusemi:ni, but the drop rate is pretty bad on all of them from what I understand.
