The eagle eyed GamingReport.com seems to be the first site to notice (http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=18249) that Blizzard and Upper Deck have announced a World of Warcraft CCG (Collectable Card Game), which will launch in the Spring of 2006. According to GamingReport.com, there will be special cards included in each box (http://www.gamingreport.com/article.php?sid=18271) or pack that can unlock items in the World of Warcraft MMORPG.
Brian Hacker, former Shaman King TCG designer, is the lead designer for the game and is working hand in hand with Blizzard to capture the feeling of emersion that the online version offers its 3 million plus subscribers. Upper Deck is looking at having special silver foil cards in packs that once scratched off, like a lottery ticket, could reveal a special code. The various codes then can be used online to add special appearance alterations/changes, to online player characters. They are even going as far as too look at having resource pools to collect from every purchase, much like collecting bear pelts or spider legs in the online game, which can be redeemed for special alterations to player characters.Sounds kind of cool. Did anyone buy the d20 Warcraft RPG? I have been wanting to add it to my collection, but I'm currently obsessed with picking up old Traveller books.

I love the concept of CCGs (and I've been thinking about Pirates of the Revolution because of the novelty), but I've been burned too much by them. Why?

I really like the collectable mini figures games, but I don't have anyone to play against unless I want to go hang out at the local comic book store and I'm a bit outside the "hang out at the comic book store all day" age group.
Instead, I spend my figure/card budget on 12" figures (wait till you see the Star Wars expanded universe figures) and hardcover d20 books. I have a really extensive collection of D&D d20 books.
I don't get much opportunity to play pen-and-paper RPG's any more, but I still enjoy reading the books and looking at the art.

My friends and I just got back into Magic: The Gathering (which happened to coincide with 9th edition release), which has been a lot of fun. I'm glad I still have all of my old cards because I could never afford buying boxes just to play for fun (college student). I actually cancelled WoW for a while to focus on school, but if when I get back into it I might check this out.

I'm hoping that the new UFS being built around Penny Arcade, Soul Caliber, and other IPs hits a decent amount of popularity. Something big enough to get my aquaintences into playing CCGs 'cause I loves 'em.
This thing, I don't know what to think of it yet. Sounds a little fishy and possibly just a money-grab with all those game promo cards being mentioned.

Milking The Cash Cow!
Very smart move on Blizzard and Upper Deck. They can milk this cash cow for all it's worth. I can't help to think if SOE had done this they would be getting a lot shit for it.
Promo cards are probably what will be the driving force behind the sales if they have good in-game items. To be honest, I would rather have the little micro expansions that SOE did for EQ2 to get new items. It would be cheaper in the long run.
Not a SOE fanboy, still playing WoW myself. I just see this as a way for Blizzard to get more of my money. Blizzard and the Ebay crowd.

my friend started a d20 campaign in the wow universe but i could only attend to one session because i started working on week-ends =(
it was cool though, you could buy the books if only for the art and sketches inside.

Yeah, I really love the Warcraft artwork, but the price of the d20 rulebooks kept me away.

I picked up both the Warcraft RPG, and the WOW D20 RPG, not so much for my D&D campaign, rather I wanted to have all the background handy. You would be amazed how much it helps understadming whats going on around you in WoW.
As for the cards..count me in! Thing like that are usually only reserevd for the Chineese and Korean audiances. I heard that some of the cards will let you change your charcaters appearance while others might let you set the color of your Armor set.
 Can you imangine what a card that changes an armor set to Black, or a Card That Gives you Death Knight Armor will fetch on Ebay? This could very well Rival the Magic craze of the early 90's.

I just got back from GenCon, they had demos of the WoW boardgame going, it was of MUCH higher quality than the Warcraft boardgame.

I remember when Brian Hacker was one of the top pro Magic players. I seem to remember him having blue hair most of the time.
Damn, that was a long time ago.

My roomate has both the Warcraft RPG (and many of the suppliments) and the new WoW RPG. He likes to blend Warcraft, Rokugon (sp?) and Arcana Unearthed rules into his own setting.

I can imagine color-change cards being very popular, if only because it's such a common complaint that characters have a tendency to look too similar (everyone running around in the same "uber" armor). They're going to have to be very careful, though, that they don't add anything that gives a gaming advantage. Folks get pretty bitter when they feel like the playing field is uneven in any multiplayer game, and in MMOGs where you become invested in the success of your character it's even more intense.
For me, it took a long time to get out the CCG and trading card collecting habit and I can't risk getting hooked again. Heck, I still can't look at a foil-wrapped set of cards (of almost any type) without salivating like Pavlov's dog. :)

M:TG was like crack to me (and I still have a few of my best decks in the car just in case) so the idea of getting into another CCG is not going over well with me. Of course I'll be all over it just so I can add some dorkily cool unique customization to my character. Of course It'll probably be like the pets for the collector's edition and the Blizzcon bonus (you've all seen the baby murlock pet (http://www.blizzcon.com/swag.shtml) , right?). Something that really doesn't do you any good but is cool to have for 5 or 10 minutes.
I wonder if I'll play the game at all or just whore for the in-game cards.

Yeah, I saw this over on Gamingreport.com a few days ago and tried to get some interest in it going on the WoW message boards, but it was drowned out in the constant flood of whining and complaining that constitutes the usual fare over there. If the card game itself is entertaining enough, it should sell decently, but if the rewards in the rare cards are worth having, I can see people buying it by the caseload just for those, if the market for gold sales is anything to go by.
The d20 World of Warcraft RPG is much nicer than the first set of Warcraft books, and I picked it up, though it's really only useful for the lore - if you've already got the D&D 3.5e books, a large part of it is just a reprint of that.
And EA, old Traveller RPG books? Looking for any in particular? I'm a bit of a collector myself in that regard.

The Dark Portal starter box was a nice perk for the gift bag, but they were really hypeing the Molten Core raid deck and the new set... whose name escapes me. Guess they didn't do such a good job. The play mat I picked up at their booth was pretty sweet though.
