Even though they've taken a bit of flack in recent times for Doom3, I still hold tremendous respect for them for releasing their sources...

Even though despite 3DR's flack over DNF, people hold norespect for them releasing their sources.

Weird.

Hehe, I still have some respect for them too. I'm sort of on the fence when it comes to 3DR, I don't begrudge them for not giving us DNF after *all this time* (what is it, 15 years now?! - yeah yeah, I exaggerate), but I can understand everyone when they make 3DR the butt of their jokes too. Duke3D was insanely fun and a memorable experience, I have to cut them some slack.

Thats because they also haven't released a game in 10 years.

Wasn't this going to happen last year?

this is true. It would be like if Westwood released the source for Dune2 and Blizzard released the source for StarCraft.

3DR = *thumbs down*

That's ok though. We will see DNF after about 3 more engine swaps. :rolleyes:

How much are you willing to bet that what you are saying is wrong?

<I'm gonna go from memory here...> 3D Realms hasn't released an internally developed title in about 8 years. (Shadow Warrior was released on May 13, 1997 and I was under the impression it was partially developed externally, then moved in-house late into the development cycle.) Duke Nukem Forever was announced in late 1996, shortly after the release of the DNF expansion pack. During the development of the Plutonium Pack was when there was the mass exodus from 3D Realms that formed most of Ritual.

They are good guys, George Broussard has always been very very kind to me personally and I've known a lot of the people who have passed into their doors and back out, but I still can't help but get a chuckle out of what will be a 9+ year development cycle for DNF.

Without 3DR we wouldn't have ever seen Max Payne and Human Head wouldn't be making Prey using the DOOM engine.

Thats correct, 3drealms just isnt a dev, they are also a publisher/producer. last real game they helped was max payne 2 if i remeber correctly. Remeber im talking a real game not that cellphone game they made awhile ago. Its good though that you are well versed in their history. I look at 3d realms as that kid on your street when you were younger that everyone just didnt like for x reason and the such. Then one day that kid gets some new toy that no one else has and then suddenly everyone wants to be friends with this kid.

Carmack wanted to release the source last christmas as a gift to the community, but it was delayed as apparently there was still one paying licensee using the source.
