WizKids sends along word that they will be releasing a new collectable card game (CCG) based on the current Battlestar Galactica TV series on Sci Fi channel.

WizKids Inc., creator of the runaway hit games HeroClix and Pirates of the Spanish Main, announced today its agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to develop a collectable card game (CCG) based on the new SCI FI Channel SCI FI Channel Battlestar Galactica series.

“We couldn’t be happier to add our tradition of innovative gaming to one of the hottest science fiction properties available,” said Mike Samora, vice president of Sales and Marketing at WizKids. “The success of the television show has introduced a new generation to the Battlestar Galactica story, and a game is the natural expansion of that introduction.” The game, slated for release in early 2006, features characters, ships and familiar scenes from the miniseries and television show on the SCI FI Channel.

Game play will mirror the intrigue of the television show: Players won’t know whom to trust, who the Cylon agents are or where the next attack will come from! Players will battle for ownership of resources and influence in order to control the fleet.

The Battlestar Galactica CCG will be supported by the WizKids Approved Play program.

Dang. I REALLY don't want to get into another CCG game (The only ones I ever really tried were Battletech, Vampire, and Star Trek), since they never hold my interest long enough to justify what I've spent to put a decent deck together, but BSG is my hands-down favorite show right now... damn damn damn. Time to start budgeting for THIS now, I guess... *sigh*

Well yeah, it is now, after how many years of raking in the cash. I think they're just going to move to a new format so they can just rehash the whole thing over again.

I played the Harry Potter CCG for a while there, but kind of ran out of people to play with as no one in college was interested in a pick-up game (even after attempting to convince them that, yes, they too, could play with Hermione). My brother played quite a bit but I wasn't about to drive 45 minutes home just to throw down for an hour. That kind of sucked me out of the CCG world even though I stare endlessly at decks in the local Comic Town. Ah well.

I could be wrong, but I think the whole clix thing only lasted a couple of years really... and went down from there. I mean, don't get me wrong, I own quite a few Mage Knight figures and a bit of HeroClix/Mechwarrior as well. But I could never find anyone to play with in my college gaming group... and those guys play just about anything.
