Gamespy (http://pc.gamespy.com/pc/rise-fall-civilizations-at-war/642006p1.html) has a hands on preview on the upcoming PC RTS game, Rise and Fall: Civilizations at War. The unique aspect of this RTS is a First Person Hero Mode in which you assume control of a single character.

So I did it. A simple double-click on Cleopatra's image and I was in control of the Queen of the Nile herself. The first thing I noticed was the terrific level of detail Rise & Fall sports. The game's engine is very effective at rendering lots of units from both extreme range and from ground level. While the graphic quality won't fool anyone into thinking that this is the latest third-person action title, there's some nice detail work on things like enemy armor and building walls. The most important thing, though, is that it was very easy to mentally map where I was when switching from the overhead view to third person. This is especially important because, as I found out, "Hero mode" isn't a chance to enjoy some down-and-dirty mayhem, (OK, it is a chance to enjoy some down-and-dirty mayhem,) but it has a much larger strategic purpose.
Release Date: 01/01/2006 (PC (http://www.gametab.com/pc/rise.&.fall.civilizations.at.war/3737/))

Machines: wired for war? anyone?

Yeah... I know everyone is just going WTF, but it was my first RTS ever... Quite enjoyable and it let us take command of every single unit in it...

Damn... Did I love controlling artillery... The ones with the huge ball that impacted and kept growing until it consumed everything in a humoungous radius....
