It's Gearbox. It's Co-Op (4-player FTW). And it's the cover story for this month's GameInformer.
It's also a press release (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1281266#post1281266), but here's a snippet: In Aliens: Colonial Marines, players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an Aliens assault more intense and horrific than ever before. Driven by a compelling and original story penned by renowned writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, Aliens: Colonial Marines will retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films while leveraging next-generation technology to create an entirely new interactive Aliens experience.
Aliens: Colonial Marines will feature a story driven single-player mode and an all-new four player co-op mode allowing players to share the chilling experience with three friends.
Thank you, Randy Pitchford & Gearbox, for recognizing the desire players have to actually play together, and more so...with 4 people.

Full Press Release: SEGA REVEALS DETAILS OF UPCOMING ALIENS: COLONIAL MARINES VIDEO GAME
First-Person Shooter Based on Popular Motion Picture Franchise Coming to Xbox 360®, PLAYSTATION®3, and PC in Late 2008
SAN FRANCISCO & LONDON (February 21, 2008) – SEGA® of America Inc. and SEGA® Europe Ltd. today revealed details of the highly-anticipated squad-based first-person shooter video game, Aliens: Colonial Marines™. Licensed through an exclusive agreement with Twentieth Century Fox Licensing and Merchandising and developed by Gearbox Software, the game will be available on Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system and Windows-based PC in late 2008.
In Aliens: Colonial Marines, players are part of a United States Colonial Marine squad and must prepare to face an Aliens assault more intense and horrific than ever before. Driven by a compelling and original story penned by renowned writers Bradley Thompson and David Weddle, Aliens: Colonial Marines will retain the atmospheric look and feel of the original films while leveraging next-generation technology to create an entirely new interactive Aliens experience.
Packing classic Aliens weaponry ranging from pulse rifles to flamethrowers as well as brand-new equipment and skills all within a squad-based combat system, players will become an elite United States Colonial Marine. Featuring claustrophobic environments, a brooding soundtrack, and a multitude of surprises and shocks, players will battle against menacing alien hordes in strikingly detailed levels that include the stark interiors of the abandoned Sulaco and unique environments created specifically for the game.
Aliens: Colonial Marines will feature a story driven single-player mode and an all-new four player co-op mode allowing players to share the chilling experience with three friends. In co-op mode, each player will assume the persona of a United States Colonial Marine and have a distinct role to play in the completion of every mission. Additionally, more multiplayer modes will be revealed later in the year that will complete the Aliens video game experience.
Since its 1979 debut, Alien and its three sequels have grossed more than $557 million worldwide, garnering numerous awards, including two Academy Awards®. In 2002, Alien was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.

Well, nah...there is no key to it. But I'd have probably skipped over it myself without the co-op. I mean, for me, there's certain credentials to a press release that actually make me read them and pay attention.
This one hooked me with 3 things:
1. Co-op
2. Gearbox
3. Aliens
Whereas:
1. Disney-made game
2. Based on Disney recent film
3. Collection of mini-games
I would have probably skipped over in reading and just in general giving two shits about, ya know?
I dunno...that's just me, though.

I follow a similar method for press releases - if I personally find it interesting, or I believe others will, I'll post it. Otherwise, I'll not.
So really there's no difference. I've been asked several times by readers, etc. why I post so many press releases, but in reality I post about 20% of the ones I receive, and only those which fall into the above categories.

Aliens: Colonial Marines will feature a story driven single-player mode and an all-new four player co-op mode allowing players to share the chilling experience with three friends.
Does this mean the co-op mode is an entirely new set of missions, or does it mean that co-op mode is just "new" to the franchise?

Must. Have. Predators.
Y'know, to: a) be able to boast and have 2 franchises in 1, b) Balance these days needs a tripod of races to work and c) it's the closest thing to a first person pseudo-Starcraft experience.

I'm sold even tho it's a first-person perspective. Now don't get me wrong, first-person is a blast and works in a game like Aliens vs Predator, but for a squad based game it would be better, if it was an Isometric (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isometric_projection) perspective or hell even a third person. Squad control for first-person games suck. Hard.
I do like the idea that there is no HUD. Get's you more in to it.

So this takes place between Aliens and Alien 3 or after Alien 3?
Either way that doesn't make an awful lot of sense... didn't the Sulaco half explode at the beginning of Alien 3?
I really shouldn't be getting picky about the story for an Aliens video game, this early about so I guess I'll end on a quote...

Given that most of the marines ended up dead after Aliens, I'd say it took place before.
Damn, this could be good! And if MP is colonials versus Aliens as well as PC marines vs. PC aliens, this could be even better :)
As for the screenshots...them's bullshots, thar! The GI is too nice, and it looks like well developed radiosity and sub-scatering going on too, all in realtime. End of the year, I don't think that 8800's or 9800's (funny how nvidia now is using ATI's best serialnumber :) ) are gonna be able to handle that.

Yeah, but it makes reference to an abandoned Sulaco, which would put it after Aliens.. which could mean either going in to rescue Ripley/the specimens and before everything goes wrong with the facehugger/the escape pod shenanigans at the beginning of A3.
It could also be based after that when it's a burnt out husk...
Honestly I don't care that much about the chronology when it all looks this spiffy.
If it's set during Aliens, I wanna be Spunkmeyer.

Fuck it, maybe they'll just pretend A3 and A4 never existed. Total alternate reality, where the scriptwriters for Alien3 are taken out back and executed.
Hell, they did it for Superman Returns. Why not this?
If they have the balls to do that, I'll buy four fucking copies.

The article in GI began by saying "Ripley is Dead", and was specific in mentioning that the Sulaco was found adrift, abandoned and having suffered from an apparent fire in the crew compartment. This fixes where we are in the timeline and the canon to some degree, and I honestly like where that is.
GI goes on to mention that there will be a return to LV-426 in the game, and that we can even hope for some information on the space jockey race seen as corpse only in the first film.

Fucking swish.
That's what I had always been hoping for with the movies and always though it a shame that they always skipped over the Space Jocky for shitty CGI and a hack-job at replicating the original using only the spectrum of brown.
