The firmware update that was planned for this week for all U.S. PSP owners has been pushed back to sometime next week (http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=psp&message.id=806673).

I dont know if I will update... I dont think I can give up all that homebrew goodness! Its like giving up all this sweet extra free features you found... why would you do it? My emulators, visualizations, and iso loader is just too nice to give up. Anyone going to update?

Yea, I never got into the homebrew scene but I knida wish I had. But sooner or later they will crack 2.0 and then the next version and so on. I update my Japanese PSP a few weeks ago. The browser is nice and the new audio codecs are good to have. The Wallpapers is good to finally have as well. Though nothin you can't have with a little brewin :)

BTW Death Jr. just got reviewed by IGN and recieved a 7.0 :( Seems it sufferes from bad camera controls, but plays like Jax and Daxter.

lol, PSP update...

Yeah right. I'm gonna get right on that. And hey, while I'm feeling like getting fucked in the ass, maybe I'll call up the plumber and have him come shove a plunger up my anus.

Why is there a delay?

Is there some issue translating it from working to... working?

Was wondering what was going on with this. Looking forward to some web browsing.

Man I want to buy a PSP simply for the homebrew, but it's gonna be hard to find a 1.5 Firmware version out of the box.

They're probably adding some DRM at the last moment. /duck

What, exactly, do people mean by "homebrew?" Somehow I can't shake the feeling that the phrases "homebrew" and "downloaded ROMs on emulators" are interchangeable.

Pretty much.

There are homebrew webbrowsers, text readers, calculators, etc... but most homebrew turns out to be games such as emulation or remakes of classics.

homebrew f'ckn rocks!

v2.0 would be fantastic to have (especially for the browser), but there is nothing that Sony could produce to match all the amazing homebrew apps currently available for v1.0 and 1.50.

I may end up just getting another PSP (the white version for example) to play official games (i.e. GTA:LCS) that require the latest firmware version. I hope there's a v2.0 loophole to get homebrew working on it, but I highly doubt it this time (that is without a physical mod to the PSP hardware).

Otherwise, my current PSP is and will only be for homebrew.

I already updated my US PSP with the JPN 2.0. Had some homebrew before the update and I can't say I was all that impressed with most of it. The update, however, with the codecs, personalization and the of course the webbrowser (which I'm using right now to post this) makes this device not just a game system but a portable entertainment center. I just want the US version so my PSP can be "legal" again. I hope to see PSP friendly sites where you can download up to the minute news, sports and weather.

So let me get this straight. There are people who'd be willing to drop ANOTHER $250 so you can have one handheld that plays legit games and another that plays slightly buggy emulators, calculators, and other programs as well as a crippled PDA?

Christ. Humanity makes me sad sometimes. Can anyone PLEASE give me examples of homebrew that is so absolutely critically important? I'm just not seeing it anywhere.

obviously, you've not tried any of the emulators for the PSP.

i'm playing through hundreds of games i never had a chance to play back in the good'ol days of 8-16-24 bit consoles & handhelds (NeoGeoCD, SNES, Genesis, PCEngine, etc)...and others like Amiga, MAME (sega, capcom, irem, namco), Wonderswan...and there are many game ports such as Doom 1&2, Heretic, Quake, SmashG...the list goes on.

Some emulators need improvement such as the GameboyAdvance and PSone but other than these, all others above work quite f'ckn outright awesome.

But hey whatever right? Yea, you should stick with your v2.0 PSP for the half-baked Sony browser.

Like others have said, the emulator is alot of fun... take old games with you every where you go. Plus it is possible to warez games for psp and play the isos on your unit.

With more time, even cooler programs will be available. Its kinda one of those things that you find either really awesome or really stupid. People have just ported a x86 processor emulator to the psp. With that, you can run operating systems like windows, linux, and bsd on your psp. Is there a point? probably not. But its fun trying to see what you can do with something this small. Its like putting kits on your car: it doesnt make your car any better (usually), but it looks cool and is something fun to do.

There it is, then - I was really just waiting for someone to say it. The rather widespread anger at Sony for killing homebrew seems kind of ridiculous when all they're really doing is shutting the door on people using their platform to download emulated - stolen - software.

I guess I just call in the "it's incredibly stupid" category.

Thing is, that if these Homebrew people want to play the new games coming out, they will HAVE to update because the games will demand it.

A large majority of the emulation out there uses abandonware roms, fyi. I'm sure there are plenty of people using illegal roms, but I wouldn't believe that to be the lion's share, at least not yet, since it requires some intelligence to get it working---which gets rid of your average warezhound.

Perhaps. But scan a few posts up - that fellow specifically named emulators for consoles where I guarantee the vast majority of available ROMS are definitely not abandonware.

Either way, I don't give a flying flip whether or not people want to put this stuff on their PSPs. I just think it's ridiculous that so many people try to take the moral high ground in the "Sony vs. Homebrew" argument.

"Abandonware" is a euphemism for piracy.
