Lords of Thunder - TurboGrafx 16, 800 points
Lords of Thunder is a side-scrolling shooter that has you take on the role of a legendary warrior, blasting enemies to heavy-metal tunes. Your enemies are plotting to revive Zaggart, “The Dark One,” who was sealed beneath the six continents of Mistral. It’s up to Landis, descendant of the heroic Dyu, to stop them. Choose the order in which to attack the six stages. Before each stage, select one of four magic armors and use crystals you’ve collected during your battles to buy items. Selecting the right armor for each stage is the key to your ultimate victory. Then get ready to face awesome enemies like a fire-spewing sea serpent or a giant insect.

Harvest Moon - SNES, 800 points
You bought the farm, so now it’s time to roll up your sleeves and try living off the fat of the land. Fresh air and the beauty of the outdoors will be fulfilling, but a successful farm needs a lot of working capital as well. There are buildings on your property, but they are in need of livestock.
You have a modest house, but if things get lonely in the field, it’s going to take a remodel to woo a female farming companion. Your challenge is to dig in and build your life as a farmer from the ground up. How you manage will determine the outcome, but remember: You always reap what you sow.

It's about goddamn time. The last few VC releases have been a tad stale. I know that many US gamers have been pining for Harvest Moon ever since It was released on the European VC.

I can finally get a chance to try the original harvest moon. I've always been a huge fan of the series, but the massive price on the SNES version scared me off from giving it a go.

If i buy it, it might alos raise the chance of HM64 showing up. I do want HM64.

Lords of Thunder seems cool too, i really enjoyed Gates of Thunder.

Count me among those waiting for the North American release of HM; next time I pick up some points (damn you, tight budget!) I'll be grabbing it!

It's my understanding that Harvest Moon: Back to Nature for the Playstation was basically a port of Harvest Moon 64. The recently released HM: Boy & Girl for PSP is another port that includes the girl version that was previously available only in Japan.

But instead of worrying about those, you'd be better off grabbing Friends of Mineral Town (or More Friends of Mineral Town, if you like playing as a girl). It plays like a remake/sequel to Back to Nature with lots of cool additions. (Then again, I would still say the best HM yet is Magical Melody.)

I think I'll also pick up Harvest Moon to check out the roots of the game.

Your understanding is incorrect. It has the same setting, but it is a completely different game. Back To nature is arguably the best in the series. (I'd tie it with HM64)

Still have a copy of HM 64 sitting here, this news post almost makes me want to play it again....

Almost.

Thanks for the heads up. I'll have to try to play HM64 some time then.

And I'd still say that Mineral Town, Harvest Moon DS, and Magical Melody are all better than Back to Nature, with Magical Melody being the best so far. Back to Nature is pretty solid, but the 2D ones after it have been improvements.

I've always had a soft spot for the Harvest Moon games, but the only one I've ever owned myself is the first Gamecube release. I borrowed the SNES version from a friend back in the day and had a really great time with it.

The biggest fault of the HM games is that they can become quite tedious. Still, they are very cathartic.

I concur that Magical Melody is probably the best harvest moon game. I really like Rune Factory for something different, but it didn't have the staying power that magical melody did.

I've played through 64, Back To Nature, A Wonderful Life (strange diversion), Harvest Moon 3 GBC, Friends of Mineral Town, Harvest Moon DS, Magical Melody and Rune factory.

But, i just really want to give the original a chance. See how far they've came.
