Drunken Coders has recently launched their unofficial Nintendo DS version of Quake II (http://quake.drunkencoders.com/index_q2.html) which plays the full retail (or demo (http://www.download.com/Quake-II-demo/3000-7563_4-10243474.html)) .PAK files. Yeah it's probably time I got a dealy for mine DS. Which one should I go for?

It's amazing what people will spend their free time doing. Did we really need a DS version of Quake 2?
Why didn't these guys just make their own game?

I ran into this over the weekend when I was loading QuakeDS on my new R4. As the site was loading, I was thinking to myself 'I wonder if they can run Quake II on the DS' and imagine my surprise to see they had in fact done just that.
I wonder if they can run Quake 3 on the DS...

Heh, I just got my R4 in the mail about an hour ago. Might as well try this one.

The first steps in homebrew on handhelds is to test the limits and port the "standards" over. First thing I did when I hacked my PSP was to get Quake 1 running on it. It's actually really impressive (note, I had nothing to do with getting Quake 1 running on the PSP, I just thought it was cool that they made it work).
I'm surprised Quake 2 can run on the DS at all, with its polygon limitations. I think this is a great feat.

I really need that R4 now.
Just so you guys don't get your hopes to high
Unlike Quake 1, there is simply no way of fitting Quake II into the memory configuration of a stock DS. To play the game you must have a supported slot-2 flash card that contains a minimum of 16 megabytes of RAM.
Looks like I have some shopping to do for a Slot 2 ram memory card and a R4.

Luckily those slot-2 carts are ~$20 (and quite handy if you have any GBA games you'd like to play from your slot-1 card).

Maybe because it's a cool little project that helps them learn things about coding? Is that ok?
The point of releasing full source code to this game was so people could tinker with it.
If you don't need a DS version of Quake 2 the solution is simple: Don't download it.

You're quickly becoming my favorite idiot around here.
coding != porting
Actually, there is a lot of coding involved in porting something to the DS, or any platform, especially for homebrew where no official devkit exists.

Not to mention that the game does not actually fit onto the DS, requiring a lot of clever tricks to get the software to run at all.

I'm the idiot and you think there is no coding work involved in porting?
Yeah I'm sure taking the Quake 2 source code and porting it to the Nintendo DS takes no coding at all.
Get a clue, idiot.

I never said it didn't require any coding...but if coding experience is what is needed porting is less than ideal.
I've actually done porting before....a long time ago and looking back it was a total waste of time. Porting often takes a lot of time and patience and the payoff is usually nothing more than "hey look what I did!".
Every post you make you simply validate my opinion of you...a complete moron.

Not really...unless you're comparing porting to writing no code at all. Porting doesn't even come close to writing something of your own.

THANK YOU!!!!!!
PLEASE DO AND DO IT ASAP!!!!
Not really...unless you're comparing porting to writing no code at all. Porting doesn't even come close to writing something of your own.So maybe they would rather spend 6 months coding a port to learn more about the DS architecture, than trying to do that AND write a comparable game that took one of the best game developers a few years to make?
I just don't see why you care what they do with their free time; also, I see value in portable Quake II regardless.
I also don't code for the DS but from what I've heard, it's not a simple matter to just port something like this over. I think it's a lot more difficult than you've made it out to be.

Again not really...or maybe I'm just projecting my own software engineering skills onto others. Perhaps this was a huge deal for them.
Porting this game has very limited longterm payoff. Noone is going to use this engine...noone is even going to really play the game other than a few people who want to say "Look what I did" also.
Well you ought to contact them and let them know. In the homebrew scene, this IS a big deal.

Reminds me of the guys who ported Doom 3 to the Voodoo 2.
It was newsworthy for about a day in the hardware/gaming world.
Looking back noone really cares. It didn't launch any careers.

What's crawled up your rear sphincter today? I don't get your outrage. You don't care? Fine, move along. I think its cool, and its always worth cheering when the Quake's hit yet another platform.

Sorry. No WiFi code
But there is a port of the original Quake for Palm OS (http://www.metaviewsoft.de/en/Software/PalmOS/Freeware/ZQuake/) devices that includes WiFi support. I've run it on my Centro and had multiplayer battles over Bluetooth for local battles, and using the Sprint data network for long-distance battles. If your palm device has WiFi, you are supposed to be able to use it.

I can't comment on the relative newsworthiness of what's posted around here?

Hey, next time you have a couple of spare hours why not port over QIII to show us how it's done?

Seeing as I just called their effort a waste of time why would I waste my valuable free time pursuing something similar?
