Korean company Gamepark is making plans to release a new version (http://www.gpx2.com/product/product.asp) of their handheld console. The previous one (the GP32) had some loyal followers but in the end didn't succeed on a big scale. The new version seems to have a lot of PSP features and most of them a bit better than Sony's machine. More info on Linuxdevices (http://www.linuxdevices.com/articles/AT9112527929.html).
The new GPX2-F100 has dual ARM9 cores, according to Gamepark, along with 64MB of NAND Flash and 32MB of RAM. Its 3.5-inch QVGA (320x240) TFT LCD supports 170K colors. Hardware controls include a fourway controller on the right and a small thumb joystick on the left. I/O ports include a stereo headphone port and a USB 2.0 client port that Gamepark says supports 500Mbps file transfers (about 62MB/sec). The device also includes a top-mounted SD card slot.

I like the "open" ideas of the handheld. Maybe this might be the home of small developers and DIY software projects.

Interesting. I want to see how this thing performs once it's out. At least they've got my attention.

What do you mean PSP2?

I'll buy a compact DS when one goes on sale.

Man the GP32 had all kinds of fly stuff on it that seemed poised to knock sp... Potential, is nice but nothing without backers... I think it's amazing to have smaller companies get in on the action and even a device for people to learn game design and programming with as a little starter device, but that get you no were... It's like Gizmodo or whatever that system is...

It is nice to see handhelds that encourage homebrew and emulation instead of breaking it with firmware updates.

Is there even plans for a PSP2? Or is that just spec? Or, more likely, a typo? Not to be critical or anything, just seeing if I missed something.

PSP2 more than likely a typo, because people are used to typing PS2.

Cute little machine this GPX2 thing, but there's NO WAY it's going to dent the mighty Sony, who are barely dent the mighty Nintendo, when it comes to handhelds.

PSP killer? Look at the DS sales in Japan and soon in the States. That's killing the PSP right there.

The ds is stupid... PSP doesn't have the support ps2 has for orginal work... And all other players in the handheld are just to small... I think the smaller players are better in some cases, doesn't mean they are even a after thought to sony let alone nintendo...

The Gp32 always sounded pretty cool but as with the GPX2 unless they get some major game developer support, which isn't likely with their support of emulators, they just become portable emulators, which the PSP can do anyway.

I honestly don't think the PSP was going to be around that long anyways. I mean come on it has no games. I've been playing nothing but Lumines and that homebrew game Squarez witch is way better then anything you could even hope to buy in a store.

hell all i need is a portable emulator

I really think handhelds are suited for 2d better anyway

but i wonder... do you think this thing would be able to emulate ps1 games?

GPX2 is dead in the water. It has some accellerated 2D, and that's it. The rest is not enough to make even a visible dent in the DS or PSP markets. Homebrew is always nice, but it's such a negligible market.

It's not a matter of picking on you, it's just impossible to see what you meant by you post.

What the heck do you mean by "players"? The screen?

Does that make the DS an abortion, as the PSP is fairing significantly better in North America?

I wish the PSP would enjoy a cold, expensive death. But the PSP will be around for quite awhile. It has shipped several million units (no telling how much they have sold, because so many go back to the point of sale defective). It has the backing of the film industry because they bend the consumers over on the price of the UMDs...
I'd prefer someone to come out with a portable that can do everything the PSP can and actually release a worthwhile game every once and awhile. I had to trade the PSP in 3 times for defects and I finally gave it to my nephew.
I'll take a look at the GPX2 when it comes out because it isn't Sony, and Korean developers have given MS some love.

Players in the sense of the player in the handheld game... DS and PSP would be considered the big players, as whoever the hell makes gamespark or whatever and gizmondo are smaller players... They have no ground...

Just because movies are released for the PSP does not mean it will survive. It shall take more then that for it to make it in the market. Its still very expensive and it is not selling as well as the people at Sony had thought it would. They lose money on every unit they sell and without the game sales to make up for the hardware losses they make have to pull it from market.

Are you kidding me?!?
The PSP seems to be selling ok....though I have heard that it hasn't sold as many as they hoped.

This site says that the PSP has sold 5 million units
http://www.pspupdates.com/2005_06_26_archive.html

This link says the PSP has sold 3 million untis in the US and Japan.
http://biz.gamedaily.com/features.asp?article_id=10257&filter=

Where did they sell the extra 2 million units??

But before the MS fanboys scream hooray for the death of the PSP (I wish it would fail because I had to trade in three units to get a defect free one) just remember the xbox didn't move this many units after three quarters. Also, I don't think this new handheld will be a PSP killer, let alone a PSP 'hamperer' or 'annoyer'...maybe a PSP 'victim'. Once they redesign the PSP (and make a few games), I may pick it up again.

Oh and as far as software sales go, they have sold about 5 million units of software and more than 200k (closer to 300k) movies.

PSP Killer?
Oh.

So....err...which major games company is making titles for this thing?

Here is one of the most important points of "this thing." It openly allows for emulation, all of you who like having a machine that allows for emulation: go buy this. Plain and simple. Sony will never, EVER, allow the PSP to legally have emulated games to the extent that you desire. If you truely believe they will, send me whatever you are smoking because it truely is some good shit. This is a handheld system that allows for homebrew, emulation, and hack's without fear of legal recourse. Who cares what major companies support it? It is a machine that is giving people what they say they already want! Step outside the box people. Think for yourselves.
