View Full Version : EA/Marvel Deal Cancelled; Fighting Game Killed

Dr.Finger

It hasn't been a good year for games based on the Marvel comics universe. First Cryptic studios hit a rough spot, possibly killing the Marvel MMO in the process (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39572) if rumors are correct. Then EA Chicago, developer of the underwhelming Marvel Nemeisis fighting game, shut it's doors (http://evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39084&highlight=chicago).

Now comes word that Electronic Arts and Marvel have prematurely ended their multi-year deal (http://www.gametap.com/home/read/article/3402) to develop games based on the Marvel catalog. In the process the previously announced fighting game EA Chicago had been working on is also scuttled.

This does not affect other Marvel licensing deals, including one with Activision that resulted in the Marvel Ultimate Alliance game.

When are we going to get a M:UA sequel?

Don't suppose there is any chance Capcom picks up the license again, is there?

Cryptic Studios didn't shut down, did it? They sold CoH/CoV to NCSoft, but I'm pretty sure they still exist.

Yeah, they still exist, but they aren't working on the Marvel MMO anymore. Nobody really knows what they're doing, at this point.

Its solid. If you like the action RPG dungeon crawl genre at all I'd recommend it.

2K or Take Two- whichever of them owns Illusion now- should get Illusion to make a MArvel themed GTA clone. Instead of Mobster X, you play as one of the Marvel capes and run around a city aligning with other groups to do missions. Hell, it writes itself.

EA Canada did Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects, not EA Chicago.

Spigot
01-28-2008, 04:54 PM
If the fighting game was going to be done by the people responsible for Marvel Nemesis, we're better off not having a sequel. Gah.

On the other note of Marvel: UA2, oh, I cannot wait. I adored the first Marvel: UA game and as long as they have Deadpool in the sequel, I'm a happy Spigot.

It would probably be in that new 3D on 2D method they are doing for Street Fighter 4. I could actually go with that though.

I swore MUA was in the works but I can't find any proof anymore. I swore it was supposed to take place right after the ending of MUA with Galactus and his Heralds being the overall baddies. >_<
I just hope they can do the game without the origins flying at you like food during a food fight. I got so tired of everyone explaining who they were after a while.

No it was rumored to be canned....and just because cryptic is not doing it...doesn't mean another company isn't.

Having read a few industry insiders say months ago that it was canned and didn't get far past the concept stage, leaves me to believe it was indeed canned. You're right that Marvel may shop it around to another dev but until we hear thats happened I think its safe to assume its not going to happen for the foreseeable future.

Actually cryptic did not own the rights to it....microsoft does...until its officially dead though we cannot assume it is because some rumors said so. Alan wake for instance has had very little said about it....but its still comming. It may be cancelled but lets wait for the official announcement before we assume.

Like I said, it's been heavily heavily heavily rumored and is more than likely canceled, but there has been no official confirmation of that even now months after the rumors started. Which is odd.

Hmm I did some digging and there is nothing out there confirming or denying cancellation of MUO....as a matter o f fact cryptic closed down their forums to focus on in house first party games. When asked if marvel onlin was cancelled they replied all our first party titles are fine and microsoft said we don't comment on rumors...This whole storey came from 1up when they ran that a first party game would be cancelled...this was back in november and the announcement was to be made within 3 weeks....no announcement was made....

Make of it what you will...seems strange not to say its cancelled....

I have been playing City of Heroes/Villains for nearly 4 years now, and even though they are still finishing up the transition from Cryptic to NCSoft, they have not mentioned ANYWHERE officially that the Marvel Universe Online game has been cancelled.

It may have been, but no companies have ever said it was cancelled yet.

I'd be pleased if this screwed up Raven. . . well, if that meant they'd stop remaking X-men Legends 50 different ways and go back to making Jedi Knight games. Screwing up EA. . . who didn't do much with the license anyway (did we really need such a shitty fighter?), doesn't mean much to me.

Was M:UA actually good then?

Hell yes it was. The best Marvel game ever, and I know that isn't saying much. However, I'd probably rank it as best dungeon crawler ever right under Diablo 2. It had its issues, but they certainly thought of a lot of cool features when developing the game, and playing it online or even locally with a friend or 3 is a BLAST!

Shoot, I should go play Marvel: UA right now actually...

I'm not sure how this would affect Marvel: Ultimate Alliance or the Raven team since this is an EA thing and those games are published by Activision. If anything, Marvel's deal with EA becoming all messed up should only make it easier/more likely that Raven will do more Marvel games in the near future.

I'm just glad that EA won't tarnish another Marvel brand with their shitty games.
Marvel does that well enough already.

Its too bad if the new Marvel Fighting game from EA is actually canned, I caught the premiere on Game Head and it looked really promising.

I was really hyped for DJ-Icon when it was announced, mostly for the environment interaction and art style of the crazy bouncing backgrounds. The Marvel game really looked like it would take it to the next level, mixing elements of DJ (the bg interaction) and Powerstone (free for all fighting in a large environment) and took it to the next level by making the huge outdoor urban environments. Add the ability to throw people through buildings and I was sold.

Damn Shame.

I know people have probably already seen it, but check it out one last time, and wonder what could have been.

Hopefully at some point another dev runs with this concept.

Yeah, we chatted about this a bit on tonight's recording of the comics podcast. Definitely had some potential from the looks of it, even if EA's last attempt at a Marvel fighter was awful.

Marvel and DC could only win if they got Capcom to pull of a DC vs Marvel game.

WB and Isaac Perlmutter should talk.
