Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/08/09/news_6130645.html?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6130645) is reporting that Sony's Mobile version of SOCOM: US NAVY SEALS will be released on November 8th this year. The PSP version of the franchise takes place in 14 international locales, including Chile (a PSP exclusive). Fireteam Bravo incorporates tactical, stealth, and action gameplay for mobile militants as they lead a squad of soldiers against multinational enemies. The game will also feature a Wi-Fi-supporting multiplayer mode, and data syncing with the upcoming PlayStation 2 game SOCOM III via USB. The game will also feature an "instant action" mode, allowing gamers to take on levels in quick five-10 minute bursts, with new objectives and gametypes.
I always thought SOCOM was a bit over-rated, but this is good news for PSP owners.

Bah. SOCOM's one of the best things going on online on consoles.
And that's for only one reason - LEVEL DESIGN.
Lots of games have much prettier graphics, smoother framerates, friendlier learning curves, and tighter and more reliable netcode (something that's supposedly getting a lot of work for the next game). But SOCOM II's level design was stellar. The first game's levels were certainly inferior in comparison, and when I moved on to games like Halo 2 and Rainbow Six 3, I was definitely disappointed by the lack of real clever level design that kept games fresh after 1000 hours of online play.
Well that, and good gameplay modes like Escort, Demolition, and the awesome Breach levels. Games like Ghost Recon 2 have a lot to learn in terms of good game types from SOCOM. If GR2 had the Breach gametype, oh man.

If only ghost recon (pc and all expansions) had a true sequel, not some water downed arcade shooter. To want to change some game play ways is nothing but to make the sequel that only has the name with what is in common is a big disappointed. I will return to GR when they start making games im interested in.
So basically GR 1 good, GR2 baaaaaad.

Perhaps I'm just blind, but does this mean the PSP is getting a headset? Because if so...I'm thinking I just got free cell phone service for life.
Outgoing anyway.

Now now, Ghost Recon 2 is far from an arcade shooter. It's still very much one-hit-kill, not nearly so much run and gun.
Even still, your point is otherwise well taken.

And a better alternative would be...Halo 2?

When I played So-Com on PS2...I felt like I played the game...it was called CounterStrike on PC. And it was already 4 years old.
But yes, Halo 2 is a far better online game.

I absolutely love SOCOM because you can slowly think your way through complex levels, instead of running and gunning.
