If there is one FPS this year to have gotten me excited, it’s Ubisoft’s Far Cry 2. We all know the original PC release was a fantastic title that broke boundaries in terms of what we expected graphically from the FPS genre - huge draw distances, amazing use of colour and great gameplay to boot. Later console conversions turned out to be a pile of turd, but with Far Cry 2 going next-gen, bringing with it the new (and astonishing looking) Dunia engine, we 360 owners thought we were in for a real treat come April.
That may now not be the case though, with evidence pointing towards a PS3 exclusive release for the Ubisoft title. Whether or not this could be console exclusive, or perhaps just a timed exclusive is not yet known.
Leading UK videogames retailer Game yesterday removed the pre-order listing for the Xbox 360 version, whilst both PS3 and PC-DVD iterations both remain available. Amazon UK however are now only listing the PC version for pre-order after removing both 360 and PS3 versions, whilst Play.com are continuing to take orders across all formats.
Further evidence that there may be some platform shuffling going on comes from the official Ubisoft Far Cry 2 website, where both Xbox 360, Xbox Live and PS3 logos have been removed from the page footer, with only the PC-DVD still listed.
With Playstation 3 starting to perform reasonably well at retail, this could be a sign of things to come from some other developers down the line. I for one am keeping my fingers crossed that Ubi will still release Far Cry 2 on the 360 platform, but with news this morning that another supposed 360 exclusive (Splinter Cell : Conviction) may also be heading to the PS3 one can only worry until we are told otherwise.
