View Full Version : Make up my mind!

OK here's the deal, I usually get a nice tax return and I can't seem to make up my mind on what to invest in.
So here's where you come in, vote in the poll above, and help me pick in which system I invest in for the new year.
Thanks for the help in advance.
Edit: before anyone says it, yes I posted something like this before not too long ago. But I didn't add a poll, and I still can't make up my mind. Thanks again!
Double Edit: the first poll question means "do I BUY A BIGGER HDD FOR THE 360 I ALREADY OWN?" And with that purchase do I buy a couple controllers and a game or two. Hope that clears things up.
Honestly: I think that a new system would be silly right now. You have an Xbox, which is already started its stream of decent titles. PS3 and Wii have not proven that yet. Unless you have some must play titles that you can't just give a go at a friends house (which it doesn't sound like you have), I would save the money and be able to buy a system once either Wii or PS3 have proven themselves as good consoles. Wii still has a long way to go, but the PS3 is well on its way.
(also: there is no poll above)

Do you love the Metal Gear series and/or the Final Fantasy series?
If yes, buy PS3.
Do you have children?
If yes, buy Wii.
If no to both, save that money for later in the year!

Because...well... I am am a Xbox market place whore. I buy so much shit off that thing I keep having to delete shit just to make room for the important DLC content. With a 120 gig HDD I wouldn't have to worry about that anymore.

Crap. I read the poll wrong and thought you wanted to buy a 360 with 120" TV :)
It's toooo friggin' late/early.
I'm torn. The Wii has a bunch of fun games for it and No More Heroes is out next week (with Smash Brothers coming in about a month and a half) so it's definately a decent second system. If you have the money, the PS3 would be worth getting now if only for Uncharted and a few other exclusives and the upcoming ones like MGS4, FFXIII and White Knight Story... if you're into that kind of stuff.
Otherwise, I'd probably go with Gorvi and say get a PSP. I'd rather have a PSP over a PS3 at this point in the game. Or a DS.
How's that for a clear answer?

I would say save it and then use the money when you actually see something you want, then buy it. On the other hand, we all know how you like to run out buy a game play it and then trade it in for another right away. So buy a PS3 so you have more options to do that. You really couldn't do that with many Wii games. There's only a hand full you'd want to do that and that's not worth it. GET A PS3! It's what will work for you.

Well my intent wasn't to set up another PS3 bash fest, I just was curious how you guys would spend my money if you were in my shoes. I'm personally torn and can't make up my mind. Here's how it breaks down:
Xbox 360: a 120 gig HDD and a couple new controllers and a game or two would be nice for a console thats given me so much entertainment over the years.
PS3: Wow Sony got their act together, and some decent games are coming, which makes me want one now... still not sure if $400 is worth it, but damn am I interested. That and all those cool DLC games on the Sony store, and blue-ray winning the format war are peaking my interest.
Wii: Owned one before, wouldn't mind owning one again. Metroid Prime 3 and Mario Galaxy would be loads of fun... and for $250 I can't lose! Of course I'd have to find one first...
BONUS OPTIONS(not on the poll):
PSP: The PSP to me seems to be like the PS2 right now, lots of good games, lots of support, and a nice price. I'm not a big handheld gamer but I still like what I see. And Silent Hill: Origins looks so badass.
DS: Um.... honestly the only thing about a DS that interests me is the new Advance Wars game. Now is that worth it since the only dude I play that game with is the Bro-in-law? Maybe, but then again $109-$130 for one game to play against one dude is a bit pricey.
Anyways, thats how I see things and thats why I'm having such a hard time making up my mind.

Wii if you play more games than watch movies or a PS3 if you watch movies more than play games (taking into account you have a 360). The bonus of the PS3 is you can purchase a Blue Ray version of Blade Runner with it.
My thinking is that the gaming on Wii is much different than on the 360 so like other posters have said you can go back in forth. I've got both so I've been debating a PS3 as a cheap BR player which makes the price a little more palatable.

For the win!
I'm just getting that today...don't hate me for waiting so long (I was going to get the HDDVD version, so good thing I waited ;) )
As for the topic...
I have an Elite 360...quite enjoyable. Would you use a bigger hard drive? A PS3 would be good if you have a HDTV that can take advantage of Blu-Ray. I find myself also using my PS3 more and more to stream video from my pc. I find the interface a little easier to use (plus, Vista MC still can't stream .divx without transcoding). PS3 is a certified DivX player ;)

I would get the PS3. Like people didn't know I was going to say that. If you are making an investment, then I assume you are looking for long term. The 360 has a bevy of games right now that will keep you playing for some time. They have some good multiplatform titles enroute with a few nice exclusives as well.
But if you are looking for something that will continue to innovate in the long run, that has great titles out now with more on the way, including some mind blowing exclusives, get a PS3. The days of issues with the PS3 are at an end, Studios are moving to make the PS3 the primary development platform. Everyone knows what is coming in 2008 for Sony. Everything from MGS4 to Killzone 2 to Little Big Planet to Home to Resistance 2.
If you want a machine that is going to break new ground in the gaming world, from technology to device interaction, get a PS3. We are already witnessing the association between PS3 and PSP. They are just scratching the surface. Hardware physics and AI are just two areas where SPUs on the PS3 are driving innovation and allowing for gameplay expansion.
If you want THE next gen DVD player, get a PS3. If you want the freedom to run your own OS, upgrade to your choice of a HDD - including a 500GB drive coming in March, get a PS3.

When people wave around like epileptics with a Wii it is innovation, on a Playstation it evokes sarcasm. The Eye looks pretty new to me. Not to pull the "but, but, but Microsoft" card, however they are mostly featuring games that play better on PC, with a few exceptions on true exclusives.

If you have an HDTV, I would say the PS3 is close to a no brainer now that it is $399. It is clear that BluRay is now going to be the winner of the HD format wars. If you look around, you might even still be able to find a 60GB with full backwards compatibility. So buy a PS3, enjoy HD movies and play Uncharted and Ratchet and Clank now and you'll be ready for the big releases when they come (Metal Gear, Final Fantasy etc.).
I know other people feel differently, but I could never in good conscious recommend the Wii to anyone except those that wanted an expensive party gimmick. Mario Galaxy was pretty great, but other than that I can't even concieve of why people would want to play Wii games when they have a PS3 or 360 available. Hell, even despite the great level design in Mario, I still would rather play most PS3 and 360 titles over it because of the graphic upgrades and online functions. The only reason I continue to hold on to my Wii is for Animal Crossing.

I don't know about you but my 360 has a warranty until 2010... everytime it breaks they add another year onto it. And two or three years from now, the hundreds if-not thousands of dollars worth of games you have for it will be nothing more than coasters, as you won't own hardware which will be in the condition needed to play them. I know for a lot of you guys, games are a short-term investment. You spend $60 on a game and then toss it after a week and move on to something else, never giving that old thing a second glance. For me, they're a long-term investment, I spend time with them, and even after I'm done, I come back to them again and again for many, many years. That an't happening with the 360, since it probably isn't going to function for very long, and I doubt you'll find a working one ten years from now.

The second I see some actual innovation on the PS3 I will more than happily start saving my pennies for one. It's still relying a bit too much on potential (and anger at failing 360s) for my taste but I'm interested to see how it goes this year. I think that they really need to start mining some of the PS2 titles of yore and get their butts in gear with some of the more quirky titles that made the PS2 such an awesome system.
Wolvie, I still say that the PSP would be a great investment for you given your tastes. Do you like adventure or RPGs at all? If so, the DS is also a great investment. That said, if you have the slightest interest in turnbased strategy games, the PSP is a must-own. You've got Disgaea, Jeanne D'Arc and FFT: War Of The Lions to name but a few.

But, you already have one. What I am not grasping is why you wish to get the bigger drive, and all that. It's like making a poll asking if you should get a sixth guitar for Guitar hero. That is all I am saying, why pour more money into what you already have, that works fine?
EDIT: The more I see your responses, the more I think you just have some spare cash buring a hole in your pocket. And I gotta say spending 400-600 on a Wii Bundle, sinking a few hundred more into your xbox, or getting a PS3 seems a tad too impulsive.
What about a different tact, how about beefing up your home theater?

Thanks for the input Spigot. Right now I'm leaning toward either the 360 upgrade, or a Wii. Now a PSP might be a good investment, since the wife likes to hog the entertainment center.
That right there is one of the best uses for the PSP. Wife/kid using the TV? You can still play a good, full game. And yeah, if you like SRPGs, you'll be in heaven with Jeanne, FFT, and Disgaea, not to mention Wild Arms XF and R Type Tactics in the next few months. Oh, and Metal Gear Ac!d 2, still one of the most underrated games out there. Yeah, I love the PSP, and I'm pimpin' it, sue me, it's my favorite console. ;)

We'll see about that. :)

Do not spend money, just to spend it. But I think pouring more cash into the Xbox is just a bad move. Not just on its fragility, but because Microsoft does not offer, and has never offered, long term support on their products.
But if you do get a PS3, and Rockband, I happen to still need a bass player and a singer.

There is some other method for saying what impresses you about a console?
I must have made a mistake in reading for what the OP was asking.
All I read is if you express any real words of support in what they (Sony) are doing then you are automatically labled as a PR machine. What I initially posted was fairly self explanatory and common knowledge. I shouldn't have to write a fact sheet for those items when my 8 year old neighbor knows about them.
If certain people think my remarks sound like a PR line, well they are. I am not timid about that fact as some are. I happen to like what Sony has produced versus what MS has failed to provide with everything from user Marketplace sales (get your T shirts) to this incredible interaction with other devices that hasn't materialized.

No, but the way your thought is put forth is very in line with the marketing speak. I wouldn't say, for sure, you are a marketer of some kind, but you do sound like one.
The strongest send of that comes from talking about the "future" of the console. That's the job of people who seek out investors for start-ups; they sell the "future" of the company.
The other item of note is the line
The 360 has a bevy of games right now that will keep you playing for some time. They has some good multiplatform titles enrout with a few nice exclusives as well. But if you are looking for something that will continue to innovate in the long run, that has great titles out now with more on the way, including some mind blowing exclusives, get a PS3.
You quickly point out a strong point and then immediately dismiss it with a supposed fact about the future of the console. I say supposed because of exclusives like Lair.
If you're a huge fan, you're an extremely wellspoken one (which is rare for the internets) which makes people think, "Wait a minute, this post isn't horribly offensive, and so far he sounds really pro-PS3! He must be feeding us a line! Of course!" I hope you understand why this is. :)

Well here is the situation. I am not in the marketing field. Nor am I involved with any associated line of work either. Not in the least. I am far from that in fact.
Regarding the game community, hardware included, the most I have done is some work on a few Ubisoft products, but it was strictly development related. There is still an old interview with me floating around the internet some place if you know where to look.
I actually retire from my current work in less than 5 months and this is strictly an odd hobby for me, albeit one to which I devote a great deal of personal time.
Regarding Lair I was careful, quite intentionally so, not to mention that every PS3 title ever made was AAA and infallible. Quite the opposite. Sony bears a great deal of fault in that matter. Not all of it mind you, but still, a significant amount. However, after several humiliating experiences they are learning at a very rapid pace.
Some of those public falterings were as they appeared while inquiries with certain people reveal that some of them were attack pieces in a war that has 10 times the bitterness compared to the past generation. Such quiet mudslinging has occurred on all three sides of the aisle.
Yes, I am a huge fan and as much so of sheer technology as I am of the titles produced for the various platforms. Were the OP's question to have been posed a year ago then I would have certainly stated that the 360 would be his best bet. But oh how times change even the simple matters.

Well the drive would be nice since my hard drive is getting way low on memory. And yeah perhaps a new surround sound system would be nice. But hey, we'll see when I get the money, how much it is, and what bills need to be paid and whatnot.
I'm just planning ahead and trying to decide what the best course of action would be, and trust me the cheaper the better... yet I can't get the idea of another system out of my head. Just me being stupid I guess. *shrugs*
I'll probably just pay off GTA4, look at the HDD, and decide on a new controller to replace the war torn one I have now and call it a day.

Do you buy a lot of TV shows or something? Because I only have a 20 GB and I have over 50 arcade games and a couple of 1GB+ game demos currently on it and it is still only half full.
Gamesaves and Arcade titles take up very little space. With the average size of the arcade titles, you could easily fit 500 or 600 arcade titles on a 20GB. And even assuming every game you bought was the maxiumum size limit, you still could hold well over a hundred.

I don't think you need a bigger 360 HD. Get a PS3 and join the Blu-Ray bandwagon. Personally, I was rooting for HDDVD, but right now it's pretty solid that BR stands the best chance.
Norse
01-21-2008, 12:36 AM
I agree that a bigger 360 HDD is a waste of money. You might download some TV shows, but do you need to keep them on the drive after you're through watching them? You could just download them again later on. The same goes for demoes and arcade titles; they can be downloaded again later if you delete them. After 2 years with the 360 I've yet to come close to filling the HDD even though I download every demo and buy a lot of arcade titles.
I would probably have saved the money for later, but I'm quite careful with my money (to a certain degree :) ).
If you care for Blu-ray, or the PS3 exclusives (MGS4, Resistance 2, Tekken, FF13, Killzone 2, GT5) you should consider a PS3. It's at an OK price point right now IMHO. You might hold on a couple of months and maybe pick up an even better bundle with a Dual Shock 3 controller included. If those exclusives don't do anything for you and Blu-ray isn't a selling point, you should wait until a tempting game arrives. If you buy it, be sure to pick up Uncharted as it's easily the best PS3 title around and among the top 10 for 2007.

Well, after complaining about it today again, I decided to do something about it. I found a simipler version of the mod that basically just involves getting a thin blade knife and carving away the well without even removing the controller shell. I had an extra controller I barely use (I do most of my multiplayer gaming online with friends back in St. Louis), so I figured I didn't have too much to lose.
Basically took me all of five minutes and no tools necessary but a kitchen knife. I connected the controller, tried it with both Streets of Rage and Street Fighter 2 and it worked great. It look a little sloppy due to the rough edge marks of the blade, but it completely fixed the problem. Perhaps I'll grab a piece of sandpaper and smooth it out a bit, but I'm wondering why I didn't do this a long time ago.

After a LOT of thought(I had time since I'm down with a nasty flu/cold), I've narrowed my options down to two... the cheapest and IMO best options.
1. Buy one(two?) new controllers for the 360 and pay off GTA4... and maybe reserve Bully for the 360 while I'm there. Screw the 120 gig HDD.
or
2. Buy a PSP so I can play games in bed or when the wife and/or daughters are hogging my TV. I can also play Silent Hill Origins and a bunch of other cool games.
Q & A
Question: But Wolvie, why not a PS3?
Answer: Well I'm not interested in going HD with my video collection yet, DVD's suit me just fine. Also MGS4 and FF13 aren't my favorite series'. As a matter of fact I really don't care for those series of games, at all.
So I'd be spending $400 for a Blu-Ray player I don't want, and a couple of games I don't want. What would be the point?
Question: Wolvie why not get a Wii then?
Answer: I hate to say it but the best aspect of playing the Wii is the virtual console. Also none of the games hooked me in like I thought they would... even Metroid Prime 3. And honestly the Wii just doesn't sound like a wise investment for a hardcore gamer like me. All the rest of the Wii games(aside from Zelda: TP) are either gimmicky, made for kids and old people, or are ports of DS games. Sorry Nintendo, but your bank will get bigger off of someone else.
Question: Ok fair enough, but why not a DS?
Answer: See the Wii answer. Honestly the DS is a cool system, but it's just not my bag. The only game on the thing I would want is the new Advance Wars. Is that worth $130? Not to me.

I had said controllers, but understand the TV hogging problem. If there are enough games for the PSP you want, go that route. Otherwise, more games on the 360 still seems the better option.

Buy Rock Band for your 360 (unless you have it)

Buy 360 games, maybe more controllers, so you can do 4 player Halo 3 and 4 player Marvel UA... which is about it for 4player games off the top of my head.

I think Grimm is selling new wireless controllers for $20. I got one wireless for $20 and a play/charge kit + battery for $10 from him.
To be honest, though, I'd save my money and wait for something special. You probably have more games than you know what to do with.
I'd start using Gamefly. You love to get new games from what I can tell, and it's $25/month for 2 games at a time from Gamefly. It's way cheaper than buying everything, I suggest you look into it. I've saved hundreds of dollars and still get to play every new game that comes out, just a day or two after it comes out. Plus I get to play older stuff and if I don't dig it, just send it back.

*Shrugs* Maybe I'm spoiled because I've got everything (DS, PSP, 360, PC), but to be honest, the PSP is only really good once you unlock homebrew, just so you can play your older games on the go. And... yeah. I mean, maybe I'm getting jaded but spending more than $60/month on videogames feels lame.
Maybe it's because I'm saving for other things, but spending a huge extra bonus wad of cash on games feels a little empty to me, unless it was a game that felt really special and I really wanted it.
That's just what I suggest to you. Get some new stuff that you need, but hold off on the games until something you REALLY want is about to come out. There's a lot of great games out there, but I really just don't like to think about spending the $60 on something I might play for maybe 10-15 hours at a time.
For example, Assassin's Creed. Loved it, loved almost everything about the game... but if I had paid $60 for it, I would have felt like a dummy. I'd suggest maybe going up to the 3 games/time plan on Gamefly and just checking everything out and keep saving for something special.
And to be honest, it seems since you're so on the fence about it, that maybe it just might not be worth spending the money right now. Waiting never hurts, and you probably have about 3-4 games that still need to be beaten...

I remember you posting about Rock Band and how mcuh it was, but that you really wanted it so you got it and if you had this cash saved for an occassion like that, then it wouldn't have been a hard choice at all to get it.

Well GTA4 would get played way more then 10-15 hours, yes? Also I need a new controller, it's not a want, since my current one is all banged up. As far as a PSP goes, I'm not so sure I want to buy something I'd only use once in awhile. The 360 gets most of my love, so my money will probably go there.

Actually i have one of those, it's slim white and kinda looks like a book mark. It flips up and then the light can be flipped up or down to get the light in the right spot... I dunno why I don't read more. Probably cuz I'm an impatient bastard.
That's why I read comics. I recommend Nextwave. Motto: "Healing America by beating people up." If that doesn't convince you, listen to the official theme song.

Disgustipated, hush. PSP is great period. I haven't unlocked mines and I wish I could play more of it. I was just thinking about building me a new computer. But I think bills is the way to go.
Mmm, here's the thing: Most of your PSP games run at 222 or 266 Mhz. Mine always runs at 333, so I'm getting faster loading and smoother framerates than you do. So yeah, on games like Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (which benefits from the increased clock speed) it can run quite a bit better. ;)

im happy I have a psp, but I dont use it much, I think alot of it is the feel, its a bitch to hold and play for long periods of time.
other than that, if your good with the feel, than its a great system.
If your sticking with the 360, then hell ya, beef it up, more games more everything.
I still say the ps3 is and will be more than just a mgs4 and ff machine. it just looks that way from the outside.
Im looking forward to mine.
360 first*games and live* then ds,*no brainer* ps3, *coming soon and hidef player, though Impicking up a the hd dvd add on too, i know i know.....
but you get drakes and a lot of other games that you can just rent, this way you get them all.
